Chronic radiodermatitis developing after iridium-192 exposure: a case report.

Iridium-192 (Ir(192)) is a radioactive isotope which has high-penetration ability in humans. Due to occupational accidents, industrial radiography workers may be rarely exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation, and acute radiodermatitis may develop after the exposure. After an asymptomatic period which can last several months, poikiloderma, sclerosis, necrosis, and ulceration of the skin may be observed as typical clinical features of chronic radiodermatitis. Herein, we report the case of a 26-year-old man presented with ulceration and sclerosis on the second digit of the left hand and was

Case of Merkel cell carcinoma with squamous cell carcinoma possibly arising in chronic radiodermatitis of the hand.

We report a case of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) on the dorsal aspect of the right middle finger associated with multiple squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) possibly arising in chronic radiation dermatitis of the hand of an 80-year-old surgeon. In spite of resection of the primary lesion and right axillary lymph nodes, he died of the tumor 5 months after the first visit. Cutaneous and lymph node lesions of MCC were negative for Merkel cell polyoma virus (MCPyV) by immunostaining using monoclonal antibody (CM2B4) and anti-large T antigen of MCPyV polyclonal antibody, and real-time polymerase chain r

[Chronic radiodermatitis following coronaroplasty].

We report the case of a 72-year-old patient sent by his dermatologist in January 2009 for a back burn. His medical history reported one coronarography and two coronaroplasties between September and October 2005. This enabled us to form the diagnosis of chronic radiodermatitis after coronaroplasty from literature data. The occurrence of chronic radiodermatitis of the back and axilla area after cardiac catheterization has been observed in many countries. It almost always occurred in patients who underwent difficult and long-acting procedures leading to high doses radiation. There is not always a

Reversed C-arm projection for reduction of focal skin radiation exposure: experimental analysis and first clinical experience.

Radiodermatitis, predominantly over the right scapula, is a well-known complication of complex percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). To reduce focal radiation exposure, we analyzed an inversed X-ray beam direction using a reversed C-arm position. On phantom experiment, we found that 130° right anterior oblique projection reduced skin dose over the right scapula by 98.2 % (P < 0.001) compared with conventional 50° left anterior oblique projection. A 73-year-old man with history of bypass surgery, multiple PCI and chronic radiodermatitis over the right scapula presented with recurrent chest

[Radio-induced breast morphoea: an unrecognized complication].

Morphoea is a localized scleroderma. Since the 1990s, it is described as a complication after irradiation for breast cancer. This complication is unrecognized and underdiagnosed. Irradiation seems to be a factor inducing an autoimmune process. Clinicians should be aware in case of an erythema in a treated area, appearing on average one year after the end of the irradiation. Histology alone can prove the diagnosis and rule out differential diagnoses: principally mastitis (carcinomatous, infectious), chronic radiodermatitis or radiation recall. Treatment of this rare complication is not consensu

Does partial expander deflation exacerbate the adverse effects of radiotherapy in two-stage breast reconstruction?

BACKGROUND: The optimum protocol for expander volume adjustment with respect to the timing and application of radiotherapy remains controversial. METHODS: Eighteen New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups. Metallic port integrated anatomic breast expanders of 250 cc were implanted on the back of each animal and controlled expansion was performed. Group I underwent radiotherapy with full expanders while in Group II, expanders were partially deflated immediately prior to radiotherapy. Control group did not receive radiotherapy. The changes in blood flow at different volume adjustments

Human fat grafting alleviates radiation skin damage in a murine model.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous fat grafting has been observed to alleviate the sequelae of chronic radiodermatitis. To date, no study has replicated this finding in an animal model. METHODS: The dorsa of adult wild-type FVB mice were shaved and depilated. The dorsal skin was then distracted away from the body and irradiated (45 Gy). Four weeks after irradiation, 1.5-cc fat or sham grafts were placed in the dorsal subcutaneous space. Gross results were analyzed photometrically. The animals were euthanized at 4 and 8 weeks after fat or sham grafting and their dorsal skin was processed for histologic an

Intense pulsed light vs. long-pulsed dye laser treatment of telangiectasia after radiotherapy for breast cancer: a randomized split-lesion trial of two different treatments.

BACKGROUND: Chronic radiodermatitis is a common sequela of treatment for breast cancer and potentially a psychologically distressing factor for the affected women. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of treatments with a long-pulsed dye laser (LPDL) vs. intense pulsed light (IPL) in a randomized split-lesion trial. METHODS: Thirteen female volunteers with radiodermatitis and Fitzpatrick skin types II-III were included in the study. Subjects received a series of three treatments at 6-week intervals with half-lesion LPDL (V-beam Perfecta, 595 nm) and half-lesion IPL (Ellip

Melanocytic nevus with atypical dermoscopic features at the site of radiodermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy can cause acute and chronic damage of the skin. OBJECTIVE: A 71-year-old woman presented with an atrophic and sclerotic plaque at a site previously treated with radiotherapy because of lung cancer. Inside the area affected by chronic radiodermatitis, she reported that a preexisting pigmentary lesion had gradually undergone morphologic changes after radiation therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On dermoscopy, the lesion showed features highly suspicious for malignant melanoma. The lesion was excised and examined histopathologically. RESULTS: The histopathologic diag

Radiation-induced cutaneous carcinoma of the head and neck: is there an early role for p53 mutations?

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying ionizing radiation-induced carcinogenesis of the skin. AIMS: To investigate the possible role of p53 in radiodermatitis and in the development of radiation-induced cutaneous carcinomas. METHODS: The study group comprised six patients affected by cutaneous carcinomas arising in radiodermatitis (one squamous cell carcinoma and five basal cell carcinomas), and seven patients presenting only chronic radiodermatitis. Skin specimens were evaluated for p53 immunohistochemical expression. Using laser-assisted microdissection, area

Radiation port wart: a distinct cutaneous lesion after radiotherapy.

UNLABELLED: LABELED BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy may cause common cutaneous side effects such as acute and chronic radiodermatitis and also rare skin conditions. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman who received radiotherapy for invasive breast carcinoma developed multiple, scaly, rough papules and nodules restricted to treatment fields six months after completion of the treatment. A relapse of the breast cancer and/or seborrheic keratosis was ruled out by histological confirmation of verruca vulgaris. CONCLUSION: We report the first case of verruca vulgaris associated with radiation treatment. Radi

[Post-radiotherapy telangiectasias. Treatment with pulsed-dye laser. Sequential histological studies].

Chronic radiodermatitis after radiotherapy is a frequent sequela that may be worrying for the patient. Few cases have been published in the literature in which pulsed-dye laser has been used in the treatment of telangiectasias that appeared after radiotherapy for breast cancer. We present a female patient with radiodermatitis on the neck after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The patient received five sessions of pulsed-dye laser treatment (3 ms pulse duration, 7 mm spot size, fluence between 7 and 12 J/cm 2). Sequential histological studies were performed. The response to treatment

Long-term toxic effects of radiations: sarcomatoid carcinoma and multiple basal cell carcinoma of the limbs in chronic radiodermatitis.

A 73-year-old woman was referred to our attention for the presence of severe chronic lymphoedema and neoplastic lesions of the limbs. When she was 19 years old, the patient had undergone X-ray epilation of the limbs to remove unwanted body hair. The neoplastic lesions, observed 2 years before our observation, were excised, and histological examination revealed multiple basal cell carcinomas and a spindle squamous cell carcinoma on the left thigh. The case we observed offers some interesting points of consideration as it shows that in nonexposed areas cutaneous carcinomas can appear many years

Radio-induced malignancies of the scalp about 98 patients with 150 lesions and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: - The induction of malignant diseases is one of the most concerning late effects of ionizing radiation. The topic of this study deals with skin tumors developed in the irradiated areas in children given X-ray therapy for tinea capitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: - All patients with malignant tumors of the scalp referred to Salah Azaiz Institute between 1970 and 2001 have been questioned in order to determine if there had been a prior X-ray irradiation for tinea capitis, its modality, and its consequences. The first scalp irradiation goes back to 1922 and the last was performed in 196

Pulsed dye laser treatment of telangiectasia after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the breast.

BACKGROUND: Chronic radiodermatitis after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the breast is a common sequela of treatment and can be distressing for the patient. The skin is atrophic and shows prominent telangiectasia due to dilatation of a reduced or poorly supported skin vasculature. The pulsed dye laser (PDL) is an established treatment of cutaneous telangiectatic disorders including facial telangiectasia and spider naevi, and is safe and efficacious. OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy of the PDL in the treatment of postradiation telangiectasia of the breast or chest wall. METHODS: Prospective o
