It is to be feared that the expansion of interventional radiology could lead to the reappearance of chronic radiodermatitis. Only a few studies mention the doses received by the hands, however these radiation doses are always high. Whereas clinical examinations lead to a belated diagnosis, capillary microscopy, a quick and non invasive test, enables to detect vascular injuries at the subclinical stage. Radiological protection is currently based on leaded gloves and on the reduction of exposure duration. Compensation for chronic radiodermatitis depends on the practitioner's status. In spite of

BACKGROUND: The most frequent radiation-induced skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), and in many cases, they may occur subsequent to tinea capitis, hypertrophic tonsillitis, acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, and hyperthyroidosis. BCCs occurring after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the cervix are extremely rare.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of multiple pigmented BCCs caused by radiotherapy for carcinoma of the cervix.
RESULTS: A 76-year-old female presented with four tumoral lesions within a previously irradiated area. The patient had undergone radiation therapy for cervical cancer

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative fluoroscopy imaging during coronaroplasty or transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt may induce chronic radiodermatitis. Temporary hair loss is a peculiar form of radiodermatitis following endovascular surgery of the cerebral arteries.
CASE REPORTS: Six patients (2 women, 4 men, age range: 27-47 years old) were seen for a solitary plaque of alopecia. In all of the cases, the plaque had appeared two weeks after a neuroradiologically guided embolization procedure. No other skin lesions were seen. Alopecia spontaneously and completely regressed within three to fo

The authors present two patients in whom chronic radiodermatitis developed after repeated cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty procedures, with no indication of malignancy. In one patient, after other therapeutic methods were unsuccessful in alleviating his symptoms, the authors excised the lesion with wide surgical margins and skin grafted the area. The mere purpose was to free the patient from the unrelenting pain and discomfort. In this case, the authors achieved complete success in wound healing but only partial success in pain relief.

A woman presented with a chronic radiodermatitis after a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) for unstable angina. Two PTCAs had already been performed previously. Although rare, these chronic radiodermatitis have been described after multiple cardiac catheterization procedures as a result of cumulative X-ray exposure. Prevention must therefore be implemented.

Development of skin neoplasms is the most important complication of radiation therapy. There are contradictive reports about the type of these neoplasms. Squamous cell carcinomas are considered the most frequent tumors arising on chronic radiodermatitis areas, but recent studies have demonstrated that the type of neoplasm occurring in response to ionizing radiation exposure depends on several factors. Herein we report a patient who had received low-dose radiation for the treatment of tinea capitis and developed multiple basal cell carcinomas in the radiated areas after a long latent period of

Acute and long term effects are frequent after radiotherapy. They may alter the general status and quality of life of the patients. Chronic radiodermatitis may result in ulceration and in transformation into a squamous cell carcinoma. There is a correlation of the frequency of acute dermatitis with the total dose. Chronic radiodermatitis may develop after repeated small doses of ionizing radiation for cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasties. The other prognostic factors for the level of acute and late skin reactions are volume of tissue treated, total daily dose, fractionactions sch

BACKGROUND: Radiodermatitis following invasive radiographic procedures has been reported recently in the literature, mainly after cardiac catheterization. Only two publications are related to transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), a recently introduced angiographic technique for achieving portal decompression.
CASE REPORTS: We report four cases of radiodermatitis following a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. A 63-year-old woman developed in 1997 a chronic radiodermatitis under the right scapula; a shunt was placed in 1992; from 1992 to 1997, she had a second transj

We report 7 cases of radiation-induced skin cancer. The diagnosis was based on the history of radiotherapy for benign skin diseases (5 cases) and of occupational exposures to medical doctors (2 cases). All cases were squamous cell carcinomas which arose from chronic radiodermatitis. The estimated latent period of these tumors ranged from 6 to 64 years, with an average of 29.9 years. After surgical treatments of the lesions, no local recurrences were observed in all cases. Benign skin diseases had sometimes been treated with low-energy radiation before the 1960s. Considering the estimated laten

Cardiac angiography produces one of the highest radiation exposures of any commonly used diagnostic x ray procedure. Recently, serious radiation induced skin injuries have been reported after repeated therapeutic interventional procedures using prolonged fluoroscopic imaging. Two male patients, aged 62 and 71 years, in whom chronic radiodermatitis developed one to two years after two consecutive cardiac catheterisation procedures are reported. Both patients had undergone lengthy procedures using prolonged fluoroscopic guidance in a limited number of projections. The resulting skin lesions were

We review three patients who developed chronic radiodermatitis subsequent to undergoing multiple percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties (PTCAs). All patients had had chronic ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and had undergone lengthy PTCA on several occasions. The skin eruption was characterized by an atrophic rectangular plaque on the left upper back, presenting as mottled hyper- and hypopigmentation with reticulate telangiectasia. Histologically, the eruption demonstrated epidermal atrophy, hyalinized and irregularly stained collagen, and telangiectasia of superficial vessels in the de

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures expose patients to high doses of ionizing radiation.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe 5 patients in whom radiodermatitis developed following vascular catheterization: cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty in 4 cases and renal artery catheterization and angioplasty in 1 case. All patients were men. The endovascular procedures have been repeated or prolonged in all cases excepted one. The clinical aspects were those of a chronic radiodermatitis (4 cases) and acute radiodermatitis (1 case). An extensive and painful ulceration was

Recently, several cases of skin injuries have been detected in patients undergoing cardiac radiofrequency catheter ablation. These procedures were performed on a biplane X-ray system used in a large Spanish hospital for interventional cardiology procedures. Interventional procedures performed and radiation lesions produced on patients are described. The radiation lesions were mainly erythematous lesions and chronic radiodermatitis. Results of the dosimetric evaluations and an analysis of the operational aspects of radiological protection are discussed. Poor image quality could have influenced

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopic and cineradiographic procedures expose patients undergoing coronarography to high doses of ionizing irradiation.
CASE REPORT: We report four cases of radiodermitis following cardiac catheterization. A 69-year-old man developed a radio-induced ulceration on the left scapular region in 1991 which required excision with skin graft. He had undergone 3 coronarographies and 2 angioplasties from 1989 to 1991. In 1992, a 59-year-old women developed a hard dorsal lesion with central ulceration and scar formation requiring excision and graft. From 1990 to 1992, she had undergon

BACKGROUND: Radiodermatitis after cardiac catheterization procedures has been reported in only a few cases in the literature. This side effect may not however be uncommon after long or repeated endocavitary explorations.
CASE REPORT: We observed a case of chronic radiodermatitis which developed after cardiac catheterization, in a patient treated with corticosteroids and ciprofibrate for lupus. The patient had undergone only one heart catheterization. A second catheterization performed when the patient had stopped ciprofibrate did not provoke new lesions.
DISCUSSION: This observations would s

BACKGROUND: Chronic x-ray dermatitis in professionals is a frequent problem for doctors in our country due to the fact that many of them widely used radiotherapy without any protection 15-20 years ago. Surgery has been the most accepted treatment, though it generally decreases hand function.
OBJECTIVE: Up to now, cryosurgery was not usually considered as a possible treatment if the lesions were located on fingers. In this study, the advantages of cryosurgery for the treatment of professional chronic radiodermatitis with incipient pretumoral lesions are emphasized.
METHODS: Cryosurgery was pe

Chronic radiodermatitis was already diagnosed a few years after the discovery of X-rays. Despite the fact that protection should be known to be necessary to avoid radiodermatitis, cases of chronic radiodermatitis still occur. The present case report describes a nurse who endured years of direct hand exposure, leading to chronic radiodermatitis ten years after cessation of exposure.

DNA-ploidy in primary cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas which had developed from different preceding clinical lesions was examined by flow cytometry using paraffin-embedded blocks. DNA-aneuploidy was detected in none of 15 squamous cell carcinomas arising from a burn scar. On the other hand, 12 of 26 squamous cell carcinomas arising from sun-damaged skin in the elderly, and two of four arising from chronic radiodermatitis, showed aneuploid patterns. A significantly higher incidence of DNA-aneuploidy was observed in squamous cell carcinomas arising from sun-damaged skin than those from a burn

The discovery of the X-rays in November 1895 confronted medicine with new and undreamed possibilities for diagnosis and therapy. It was welcomed by the professionals with enthusiasm, and soon X-rays were used all around the globe. Gradually, with increasingly powerful equipment, unfavorable side effects were observed. The radiologists themselves were especially concerned, because they were exposed to the rays for hours, and in the beginning without any protection. Their hands were not seldom developing a chronic dermatitis, eventually leading by way of neoplastic transformation to death. Altho
