Although several studies show the prevalence of podiatric conditions in people with end-stage renal disease or renal replacement therapy with hemodialysis, there is little scientific literature on this when subjects are undergoing kidney transplantation. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of podiatric skin and nail pathology in renal transplant recipients. A descriptive, observational, prevalence study was conducted at the Nephrology Department of the University Hospital of A Coruña. A total of 371 subjects were studied. The variables studied were sociodemographic (age, sex),

Lichen planus is chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease. Involvement of nails (nail lichen planus: NLP) could be the only manifestation or it could be associated with the other typical skin and mucous localizations. Typical NLP alterations are linear nail bed dyschromia, longitudinal ridging, splitting, onycholysis, and subungual hyperkeratosis. Pterygium could be observed in advanced stages. Treatment of NLP is challenging. Limited clinical data have suggested that both oral and topical retinoids could be beneficial. Recently, a nail lacquer containing urea (20%), keratinase from Bacillus

A thorough understanding of nail anatomy can help physicians identify the causes of nail conditions. Observation of changes to the nail can help establish a diagnosis. Patient evaluation should include a physical examination, dermoscopy, and, in some cases, nail biopsy. Onychomycosis is the most common nail condition worldwide, and should be distinguished from other nail conditions with similar manifestations. Empiric onychomycosis treatment without confirmatory tests has been proposed, but studies have shown the cost-effectiveness of testing to prevent inappropriate therapy. Systemic drugs fo

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis in the Atlas shepherd dogs from the Tiaret region of Algeria. A total of 161 dogs were included in this study and four diagnostic techniques were used, namely lymph node cytology, PCR, IFAT and ELISA. 110 out of 161 dogs were positive by at least one diagnostic technique, a percentage of 68.32% of the total number, which represent very high prevalence of canine leishmaniasis in this canine breed. 152 dogs underwent the two serological tests namely IFAT and ELISA among which 137 dogs underwent in addition the molecula

Canine leishmaniasis is a parasitic zoonosis mainly caused by L. infantum; an obligate intracellular protozoan transmitted by haematophagous insects of the genus Phlebotomus, which affects dogs and wild canids. The clinical implications of this disease are highly variable, since infected animals may remain asymptomatic (absence of observable clinical signs) or present a wide spectrum of clinical alterations and degrees of severity, including the death of the animal. Symptoms such as lymphadenomegaly, alopecia, weight loss, keratoconjunctivitis and onychogryphosis are usually the first diagnost

Tungiasis is a public health problem in endemic resource-poor communities, where dogs are important reservoirs of Tunga spp., contributing significantly to the process of transmission of this zoonosis. In order to optimize the diagnosis of canine tungiasis, macroscopic morphological characteristics and clinical signs of the lesions were investigated, based on the inspection of 40 dogs infested by T. penetrans from an endemic rural community in northeastern Brazil. Of the 1546 lesions found in these dogs, including all stages of development of the parasite, 89.1% (1378) were located on the paw

This study aimed to investigate the role of oxidative stress parameters (ROMs, OXY, SHp), the Oxidative Stress index (OSi), and High Mobility Group Box-1 protein (HMGB-1) in canine leishmaniosis (CanL). For this study, thirty dogs, naturally infected with Leishmania spp. (Leishmania Group, LEISH) and ten healthy adult dogs (control group, CTR) were included. The diagnosis of CanL was performed by a cytological examination of lymph nodes, real time polymerase chain reaction on biological tissues (lymph nodes and whole blood), and an immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) for the detection of a

Nail matricectomy is indicated in the management of painful onychodystrophies, including recalcitrant onychocryptosis, onychogryphosis, onychauxis, and refractory onychomycosis. Although many matricectomy methods have been described, with phenolization being the best studied, no one method has clearly emerged as superior. We present a series of 14 patients who underwent a total of 18 matricectomies with either phenolization or electrodessication (ED) in a private dermatology office, and describe a simple and effective variation of the ED technique using a modified hyfrecator tip. A 7-year-old girl born to consanguineous parents, had recurrent erythroderma since birth; she presented with intractable pruritus, scaling, dry skin and eczematous lesions, associated to fingers and toes onychogryphosis, along with refractory otitis. The hair was sparse and brittle, the simple light microscopic examination of hair shaft revealed a pathognomonic Bamboo aspect (trichorrehxis invaginata) and ear swab culture revealed Candida parapsilosis as otitis agent. Due to the lack of genetic routine testing, children with recalcitrant erythroderma and otitis, along with hair shaft abnormali

Disappearing nail bed (DNB) is a condition characterized by irreversible epithelialization of the nail bed following long-standing onycholysis. This phenomenon can occur in fingernails and toenails. Factors implicated in the development of DNB include trauma, manicuring, and onychotillomania and dermatologic conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis. Specifically for the toenail, contributing factors also include increasing age, history of trauma, surgery, onychomycosis, and onychogryphosis. A grading system that stages the progression of onycholysis to DNB has been proposed to aid clinicians i

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine exposure to vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) in populations of dogs living on Greek islands in the Ionian and Aegean seas.
METHODS: In total, 1154 dogs with different lifestyles and of varying ages and breeds were randomly sampled and examined for the presence of clinical signs compatible with canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs). Blood was collected from each individual animal. For the detection of antibodies against Leishmania spp., the WITNESS® Leishmania test was performed, and positive samples were further examined with indirect enzymatic i

The cuticle, also referred to as the eponychium, creates a seal between the proximal nail fold and the nail plate. It is derived from both the ventral and dorsal portions of the proximal nail fold. In addition to its principle function as a barrier preventing allergens, irritants and pathogens from entering the nail cul-de-sac, the cuticle can play a role as a model for evaluating the etiology and management of diseases that affect capillary microcirculation, provide a source of solid tissue for genetic disorder studies, and aid in the evaluation of patients in whom the diagnoses of either sys

Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) prevalence, spatial distribution and associated factors were assessed in four locations in Iguazú department in 2014 and in Puerto Iguazú city again in 2018. The city areas were divided into a grid of 400x400m cells. All cells were sampled in 2014 and a random subsampling was developed in 2018. In each cell, five dogs clustered in a 'critical scenario' (prone to have vectors) were sampled. A rapid immunochromatographic dipstick was used to detect antibodies against Leishmania infantum, confirming by lymph node smears observation and PCR. For Puerto Iguazú, G

Feline leishmaniasis (FeL) is an emerging infectious disease of cats caused by Leishmania infantum with global distribution. This study investigated the cause of chronic progressive cutaneous lesions in two cats from Central-west Brazil by using cytological, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses. Clinically, both cats had ulcerative cutaneous lesions at the nasal planum and ear resulting in a tentative diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Moreover, both cats had varying degrees of onychogryphosis. However, cytology revealed chronic inflammatory reactions associated wit

Pachyonychia congenital (PC) is a rare genetic disorder of cornification and is classified into five types on the basis of keratin gene involved. There are no established treatment options available for PC. Sirolimus in both topical and oral form has been studied in management of PC. We report a young female with a novel genetic mutation in KRT6A gene who presented with painful palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and onychogryphosis, which was cosmetically disfiguring. She was prescribed oral sirolimus after all investigations. There was significant improvement in pain within a week. Pain relief was s

Onychogryphosis is a dermatological disease characterized by hypertrophy, opaque or yellow-brown thickening, gross hyperkeratosis, elongation, and excessive curving of the nail plate, especially that of the big toe of the foot. The resultant nail deformity is often termed "ram's horn nail" or "claw-hand" deformity. Affected patients suffer mainly from pain, and cosmetic concerns. This disorder can be acquired or congenital. Herein, we present the case of an usual form of acquired onychogryphosis affecting all the five nail plates of the left hand in a bit to raise awareness of demaytologist an
