[Superficial acral fibromyxoma in a sub-matricial location: An unusual variant].

BACKGROUND: Superficial acral fibromyxoma (SAFM) is a benign soft tissue tumor located in the acral areas, particularly the peri- and sub-ungueal areas. Sub-matricial localisations have not been reported to date. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report herein the clinical and pathological presentation of three cases of SAFM located solely under the matrix. The patients presented with pseudo-clubbing, onychogryphosis or triangular macrolunula. The histopathological appearance was characteristic. DISCUSSION: SAFM is a slow-growing, skin-colored, firm nodule, located chiefly on the digits or the toes,

Pathologic mechanisms underlying the clinical findings in canine leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum/chagasi.

In dogs with symptomatic or asymptomatic leishmaniasis, Leishmania infantum appears to induce a mixed Th1/Th2 immune response that in the sick dog may eventually result in tissue damage via different pathomechanisms, notably granulomatous inflammation (eg, nodular dermatitis, osteomyelitis), immune complex deposition (eg, glomerulonephritis), and/or autoantibody production (eg, polymyositis). This is a compensatory but detrimental mechanism generated mainly because of the insufficient killing capacity of macrophages against the parasite in the susceptible dog. Clinical disease is typically exe

Naturally Leishmania infantum-infected dogs display an overall impairment of chemokine and chemokine receptor expression during visceral leishmaniasis.

Dogs are the primary reservoir for Leishmania parasites. The immune response induced by Leishmania infantum infection in these animals has not been completely elucidated, and few studies have investigated the relationship between the expression levels of chemokines and chemokine receptors and the clinical status of dogs with canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). The aim of this study was to correlate the clinical status of naturally L. infantum-infected dogs (from rural areas of Mossoró city, State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) with the expression levels of chemokines (ccl1, ccl2, ccl3, ccl4,

Seroepidemiology of canine leishmaniosis in Évora (southern Portugal): 20-year trends.

BACKGROUND: Canine leishmaniosis (CanL) is an endemic zoonosis in the southern regions of Europe. This paper reports the trend in CanL seroprevalence in the municipality of Évora (southern Portugal), where the disease is endemic, over a period of 20 years. The work comprises three different studies that were conducted in the years of 1990 (n = 3,614), 1999 (n = 3,563) and 2010 (n = 1,485 dogs). Blood samples were collected during the anti-rabies vaccination campaigns. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were detected with the direct agglutination test (DAT). FINDINGS: The total percentages of DAT sero

Clinical and hematological findings in Leishmania braziliensis-infected dogs from Pernambuco, Brazil.

Canine cutaneous leishmaniasis by Leishmania braziliensis is a neglected, but widespread disease of dogs in South America. This paper describes clinical and hematological alterations in 17 L. braziliensis-infected dogs from Brazil. The most common hematological findings were thrombocytopenia (82.4%), anemia (70.6%), low packed cell volume (52.9%) and eosinophilia (41.2%). Twelve (70.6%) dogs displayed at least one evident physical alteration; 11 dogs (64.7%) presented skin lesions, four (23.5%) had weight loss and two (11.8%) onychogryphosis. L. braziliensis-infected dogs present clinical and

Haim Munk syndrome: report of two siblings of northern India treated with acitretin.

Haim Munk Syndrome (HMS) is the allelic mutation of exon 6 codon in cathepsin C gene. Here, we present two cases of same family with HMS having all the cardinal features of HMS which includes palmo plantar keratoderma and periodontitis along with arachnodactyly, acroosteolysis, onychogryphosis, and marked osteopenia on hand wrist radiographs. Both the siblings were treated with cotrimoxazole, acetretin and topical keratolytics and followed up over a period of one year, showed remarkable improvement in palmo plantar keratoderma and periodontitis.

Salim Haim and the syndrome that bears his name.

Professor Salim Haim (1919-1983) was a well-known dermatologist. In 1965, Dr. Haim and Dr. Munk, a radiologist, reported a rare congenital type of genodermatosis, later known as Haim-Munk syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by palmoplantar keratosis, pes planus, onychogryphosis, periodontitis, arachnodactyly, and acroosteolysis. This report discusses Haim and Haim-Munk syndrome.

Congenital malalignment of the big toe nail.

Congenital malalignment of the big toe nail is based on a lateral deviation of the nail plate. This longitudinal axis shift is due to a deviation of the nail matrix, possibly caused by increased traction of the hypertrophic extensor tendon of the hallux. Congenital malalignment of the big toe nail is typically present at birth. Ingrown toenails and onychogryphosis are among the most common complications. Depending on the degree of deviation, conservative or surgical treatment may be recommended.

Congenital onychogryphosis: Leaning Tower nail.

A 45-year-old man presented with a thickened and raised nail of his left fifth finger since birth. He was otherwise healthy. On examination, the nail of the left little finger was markedly thickened, hyperkeratotic, and situated at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the long axis of the distal phalanx. There was prominent subungual hyperkeratosis. A diagnosis of congenital onychogryphosis of the little finger of idiopathic nature was considered. Visual analogy to the leaning tower of Pisa encouraged us to describe it as congenital leaning tower nail.

[Nail involvement in leprosy].

Leprosy, a disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, primarily affects the skin and nerves, but the nails are also involved in as many as 3 out of 4 patients .The factors that trigger nail changes in leprosy are numerous and include repeated trauma, neuropathy, vascular impairment, infections, lepra reactions, and the drugs used to manage the disease. The changes most often reported include subungual hematomas, onycholysis, onychauxis, onychogryphosis, pterygium unguis, and onychoheterotopia, most of which can be attributed to nerve damage and trauma. Furthermore, the acro-osteolysis that occurs

Haim Munk syndrome and Papillon Lefevre syndrome--allelic mutations in cathepsin C with variation in phenotype.

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome and Haim Munk syndrome are palmoplantar keratodermas associated with premature periodontal destruction. The additional findings of Haim Munk Syndrome include onychogryphosis, arachnodactyly, acral osteolysis and pes planus. Both are associated with mutations in the lysosomal protease cathepsin C. We describe a patient with phenotype for Haim Munk Syndrome and genetic analysis revealed a homozygous point mutation in exon 1 of the gene encoding cathepsin C.

Periodontal manifestations in a patient with haim-munk syndrome.

Haim-Munk syndrome is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized clinically by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, aggressive periodontitis with severe alveolar bone destruction, onychogryphosis, pes planus, arachnodactyly, and acro-osteolysis. Consanguinity seems a notable prerequisite. The aim of this study was therefore to report one case of this syndrome and to focus on the periodontal manifestations, in order to attract the attention of dental clinicians to this rare anomaly.

Claw histopathology and parasitic load in natural cases of canine leishmaniosis associated with Leishmania infantum.

Histological lesions and the presence of Leishmania spp. amastigotes in claw tissues were investigated in 40 dogs with leishmaniosis, with (16/40--group A) or without (24/40--group B) generalized onychogryphosis. Following euthanasia, the entire third phalanx with intact claw was amputated, formalin fixed, decalcified in a formic acid solution, embedded in paraffin, sectioned longitudinally and stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and acid orcein-Giemsa. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for the detection of Leishmania amastigotes. Lichenoid mononuclear infiltration (all dogs in

Haim-Munk syndrome.

Haim-Munk syndrome is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder of keratinization characterized clinically by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, severe early onset periodontitis, onychogryphosis, pes planus, arachnodactyly, and acro-osteolysis. Recently, germline mutations in the lysosomal protease cathepsin C gene have been identified as the underlying genetic defect in Haim-Munk syndrome and in the clinically related disorders, such as Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome and prepubertal periodontitis. The periodontal disease associated with these syndromes is particularly aggressive and unresponsive to

[Investigating the seroprevalance of leishmaniasis in four dog shelters in Antalya and its districts].

Human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) is endemic along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, while it occurs sporadically in other regions of Turkey. A relationship between canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and HVL has been detected and dogs have been found to be the reservoir of Leishmania infantum. In this epidemiologic study, the seroprevalence of CanL was investigated in dog shelters of four districts (Kepez, Kemer, Alanya and Gazipasa) of Antalya, in which visceral leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis were observed according to the official records of The Ministry of Health of Turkey. Blood sp

Resolution of tongue lesions caused by Leishmania infantum in a dog treated with the association miltefosine-allopurinol.

Canine leishmaniosis is a severe systemic disease caused by the kinetoplastid protozoan Leishmania infantum, an obligatory intracellular parasite of mammalian macrophages, transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine sandflies. The infection in dogs might occur without any clinical signs or might be characterised by chronic viscerocutaneous signs, such as lymphadenopathy, skin lesions, splenomegaly, onychogryphosis, and renal as well as ocular damage due to immunocomplex deposition. In atypical cases the parasites can be found in the striated musculature, the central nervous system, the endocrine g

Questionnaire survey on Canine Leishmaniosis in southeastern Spain.

A veterinary practitioner's questionnaire survey on Canine Leishmaniosis (CanL) was carried out in southeast Spain to provide information on disease incidence, diagnosis and recommended preventive measures. A third of 101 responding veterinarians reported seeing more than 20 CanL cases during the previous year and clinical signs considered frequent or very frequent included weight loss, areas of exfoliative dermatitis, lymphadenomegaly, kidney dysfunction, onychogryphosis, cutaneous ulcers, anaemia, asthenia and apathy. Almost a third of veterinarians reported diagnosing CanL solely on the bas
