Reconstruction of fingertip amputations, especially if they involve more than half of the fingernail require the surgeon to determine whether the fingernail should be removed. However, aside from aesthetic aspects the fingernail has functional purposes - stabilisation of the pulp and enhancement of sensibility - and should therefore be preserved. Since November 2004 we have been using the technique of combining palmar finger flaps with dorsal eponychial plasty in reconstructing complex distal fingertip defects in 12 patients. All flaps had an uneventful healing. One patient with insufficient b

We provide foot and nail care services to outpatients at our dermatology clinic in Saiseikai Kawaguchi General Hospital. Patients with dermatological foot problems such as onychogryphosis, onychomycosis, and ingrown nails are recommended by dermatologists to obtain foot and nail care services performed by a specially trained nurse. These services include a footbath, foot massage, nail clipping, and corn and nail filing. If ingrown nails exist, a small piece of cloth is placed under the nail edge.

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence, clinical and biochemical profile of Leishmania chagasi infection in dogs naturally infected and identify the phlebotominae fauna in an endemic area of São Luis Island. In this present study, 62 household mongrel dogs were sampled for antibodies anti-Leishmania. The seroprevalence was 51.61%. In the clinical evaluation, 36.68% dogs were symptomatic, 38.41% were oligosymptomatic and 26.13% were asymptomatic. The most frequent signs were onychogryphosis and lymphadenomegaly. In 29.41% animals were observed anemia. In the biochemical analy

The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and laboratory profiles of canine leishmaniasis in two distinct areas. Dogs from urban and rural areas were examined. The population studied in the metropolitan area included 54 dogs. Of these, 20 (37%) animals did not present with any signs suggestive of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Among these, only eight were confirmed negative by ELISA (rK39 and CE) and 12 dogs, clinically negative for leishmaniasis, were seropositive by ELISA (rK39 and CE). Thinness, conjunctivitis and onychogryphosis were the most frequent clinical signs in the urba

The aims of this study were to evaluate the immunomodulatory role of TGF-beta1, IL-10, and INF-gamma in spleen and liver extracts and supernatant cultures of white spleen cells from male symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs, naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. Thirty dogs from Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, an endemic leishmaniosis area, were selected by positive ELISA serological reaction for Leishmania sp. and divided into two groups: asymptomatic (n=15) and symptomatic (n=15) consisting of animals with at least three characteristic signs (fever, dermatitis, lymphoadenopathy,

We investigated the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) during canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) to gain a better understanding of the role of such multi-functional cytokines in parasite resistance. IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels were measured by capture ELISA in sera from 8 healthy dogs from a non-endemic area (control group) and in sera from 16 dogs from Araçatuba, SP, Brazil, an area endemic for leishmaniosis. The dogs from the endemic area were selected by positive ELISA serology against total Leishmania chagasi antigen, positive spleen imprints for L

The goal of this short communication is to report the uncommon presence of intracellular amastigotes of Leishmania in peritoneal fluid of a dog with leishmaniasis from Alagoas State, Brazil. Physical examination of an adult male rottweiler suspected to be suffering of leishmaniasis revealed severe loss of weight, ascitis, splenomegaly, moderately enlarged lymph nodes, onychogryphosis, generalized alopecia, skin ulcers on the posterior limbs, and conjunctivitis. Samples of bone marrow, popliteal lymph node, skin ulcer, and peritoneal fluid were collected and smears of each sample were prepared

Haim-Munk syndrome (HMS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized clinically by abnormal palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and destruction of the periodontium, with hallmarks of onychogryphosis and arachnodactyly. Germline mutations in the lysosomal protease cathepsin C gene (CTSC) have been described in a single patient with HMS and in several individuals with the clinically related disorder Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS). We describe a patient with HMS. We have analysed the cathepsin C gene in the proband and her mother. Sequence analysis of CTSC in the proband revealed a homozygous m

BACKGROUND: Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a very rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and severe early onset of destructive periodontitis leading to premature loss of both primary and permanent dentitions. The etiopathogenesis of the condition suggests that there is a genetic basis for susceptibility to specific virulent pathogens. Variation in the clinical presentation of PLS has recently been observed.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to present the first report, which describes the concurrence of PLS and albinism. The etiology, pathology, and mana

Nail disorders are frequent among the geriatric population. This is due in part to the impaired circulation and in particular, susceptibility of the senile nail to fungal infections, faulty biomechanics, neoplasms, concurrent dermatological or systemic diseases, and related treatments. With aging, the rate of growth, color, contour, surface, thickness, chemical composition and histology of the nail unit change. Age associated disorders include brittle nails, trachyonychia, onychauxis, pachyonychia, onychogryphosis, onychophosis, onychoclavus, onychocryptosis, onycholysis, infections, infestati

Leishmaniasis is a zoonosis caused by an intracellular parasite belonging to the genus Leishmania. In Europe, Africa, South America and China, visceral leishmaniasis is caused by L. infantum. The vectors of leishmaniasis are phlebotomine sandflies belonging to the genera Phlebotomus. According to the World Health Organization there are 2 million new cases each year and 1/10 of the world's population is at risk of infection. Leishmaniasis is considered a zoonosis and human are generally accidental hosts. The animal reservoir includes rodents, dog and other mammals. Several studies have indicate

Human visceral leishmaniasis is endemic in the northeast of Brazil, where the domestic dog is an important parasite reservoir in the infectious cycle of Leishmania chagasi. In this study, we evaluated the clinical signs of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), serum protein profile and the antileishmanial IgG antibody production in 86 dogs living in northeast endemic areas of leishmaniasis. Thirty dogs from a leishmaniasis-free area were used as a control group. The major clinical signs of CVL seen were emaciation and skin ulcers (80%), followed by onychogryphosis and conjunctivitis (73%). Depi

Leishmanioses are a group of parasitic diseases that affect man and other mammals. They are caused by different species of trypanosomatids of the genus Leishmania Ross, 1903 and have tegumentary and/or visceral manifestations. The distribution of this re-emerging disease, which is found throughout the world (except in Antarctica), is influenced by various factors linked to both human activity and climatic change. The heteroecious life cycle of the Leishmania includes an invertebrate host (sandflies of the Phlebotomidae family). The dog is the main reservoir for many of the Leishmania species,

Matricectomy refers to the complete extirpation of the nail matrix, resulting in permanent nail loss. Usually however, matricectomy is only partial, restricted to one or both lateral horns of the matrix. Nail ablation is the definitive removal of the entire nail organ. The most important common denominator in the successful matricectomy is the total removal or destruction of the matrix tissue. Matricectomy may be indicated for the management of onychauxis, onychogryphosis, congenital nail dystrophies, and chronic painful nail, such as recalcitrant ingrown toenail or split within the medial or

A 92-year-old immobilized white woman under the daily nursing care of a private ambulatory nursing service displayed acquired deformities of the toenails resembling a ram's horn. In light of a rapidly growing elderly population, this case report illustrates the need for close monitoring of the quality of care that nursing services provide to older persons. In addition, it reviews the clinical aspects of onychogryphosis, as well as its pathomechanisms and treatment options.

A 45-year-old woman was referred to the dermatology clinic for assessment of "refractory onychogryphosis." She had a 3-year history of lesions involving distal phalanges of the first and third of her left foot. Initially she described periungual erythema and swelling. Three weeks later she noted a whitish growth and thickening of her third toenail. X-ray films of the digit were reported as normal. Several months later the same changes occurred in her great toe. These lesions were asymptomatic. There was no history of trauma. Numerous fungal cultures were negative. No light microscopic examinat
