Measles and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis strains of virus inoculated intracerebrally in suckling and weanling hamsters spread immediately to the eye via the blood. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis can no longer be regarded as a rare disease in all parts of southern Africa. Information derived from a third postal survey added to that from our own experience in Cape Town has brought to light 116 cases; 61 of the patients came from the Cape Province, 40 from the Transvaal and the remaining 15 from the other regions. This unequal distribution and the high prevalence in the Coloured community are important factors in any attempt to understand the epidemiology and the pathogenesis of this serious complication of measles.

Live measles vaccine induced protective levels of antibody in 70% of children with protein-calorie-malnutrition (PCM) within 21 days and possibly in 90% by 42 days. Acute corneal ulceration in malnourished children is the commonest cause of childhood blindness in Northern Nigeria and usually develops after measles. Other severe diseases in malnourished children rarely precipitate corneal ulceration. Three patients are reported whose symptoms were very similar to those described in mucocutaneous lymph nodes syndrome, a disease prevalent in Japan. In one case the disease was complicated by otomastoiditis which prolonged the course and reactivated the symptoms. In the other two cases recovery was uneventful. No epidemiological relation could be demonstrated among the cases. Prednisolone was administered to two patients with immediate antifebrile effect.

The occurrence of measles over a five year period (1970-1974) was observed in a West Bengal village. Measles occurred every year between May and August and remained confined each year to small clusters or play groups.
