Yellow nail syndrome and adnexal tumour: causal or casual association?

The yellow nail syndrome is an uncommon condition characterised by dystrophic nails, pulmonary disturbances and lymph oedema. In Brazil as well as in India, this syndrome has been scarcely described, at least in part due to diagnosis pitfalls related with darker skin pigmentation. A case of adnexal malignancy developing several decades after initial signs of yellow nail syndrome is reported in a 61-year-old Brazilian female admitted for evaluation of peripheral oedema. She reported recurrent sinusitis and bronchitis, and three antecedent pneumonias. Physical examination showed yellow thickened

[A case of yellow nail syndrome associated with fibrosarcoma of the skin successfully treated with pleurodesis].

A 72-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of bilateral pleural effusion. Although examination of pleural effusion obtained by thoracentesis did not show any specific etiology, we diagnosed yellow nail syndrome due to his yellow nails and lymphedema of both lower limbs. Diuretics were effective for the control of his pleural effusion. Subsequently, fibrosarcoma was found in his abdominal skin and was resected. The pleural effusion gradually increased after the cessation of oral diuretics. Histological examination of a pleural biopsy specimen obtained by thoracoscopy showed chronic

[A case of yellow nail syndrome with bilateral pleural effusion].

A 68-year-old woman, suffering from dyspnea on exertion, was admitted to our hospital. She had noticed her nails become yellow 8 years previously. She had mild bilateral effusion. Examination of the pleural fluid revealed exudates which were lymphocyte-rich, a high concentration of adenosine deaminase (ADA) and elevated serum levels of soluble interleukin-2 receptors. These confirmed the diagnosis of yellow nail syndrome.

Congenital yellow nail syndrome: a case report and its relationship to nonimmune fetal hydrops.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is an uncommon disorder characterized by a triad of nail dystrophy, lymphedema, and pleural effusion. It is rare in children and congenital occurrence of YNS has been very rarely described. We report a 2-year-old Arab boy having congenital yellow nail syndrome with mild facial dysmorphism and bilateral conjunctival pigmentation born to consanguineous parents. One of his older siblings had died of nonimmune fetal hydrops (NIFH). The case supports the genetic basis of yellow nail syndrome with a possible relationship to nonimmune fetal hydrops.

Titanium, sinusitis, and the yellow nail syndrome.

Yellow nail syndrome is characterized by nail changes, respiratory disorders, and lymphedema. In a yellow nail patient with a skeletal titanium implant and with gold in her teeth, we found high levels of titanium in nail clippings. This study aims to examine the possible role of titanium in the genesis of the yellow nail syndrome. Nail clippings from patients with one or more features of the yellow nail syndrome were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. Titanium was regularly found in finger nails in patients but not in control subjects. Visible nail changes were present in only h

Diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous paraneoplastic disorders.

The skin plays a critical role in the detection of internal malignances. Cutaneous signs of these disorders afford clinicians opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment. We aim to succinctly review the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of selected cutaneous paraneoplastic diseases. Skin disorders that may be associated with paraneoplastic syndromes include: cutaneous metastases, tripe palms, Sweet's syndrome, glucagonoma, Paget's disease and extramammary Paget's disease, acanthosis nigricans, Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome, basal cell nevus syndrome, Bazex syndrome (acrokeratosis paraneoplas

Combination of fluconazole and alpha-tocopherol in the treatment of yellow nail syndrome.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is an uncommon disorder that is characterized by the slow nail growth, marked thickening, and yellow to yellow-green discoloration of the fingernails or toenails. Although the etiology of YNS is unknown, a diagnosis is indicated by the concurrent presentation of the nail changes, with lymphedema and respiratory manifestations. Although lymphedema and respiratory manifestations are sometimes manageable with regimens of medical and surgical treatments, YNS treatment options are limited and often unsuccessful. For the patient, YNS can also be cosmetically unacceptable a

Yellow nails as an adverse reaction to the topical use of 5-fluorouracil for the treatment of nail psoriasis.

Three patients affected with nail psoriasis of the fingers in whom the use of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) led to yellow nail discoloration are reported. Based on the fact that yellow nails are associated with a slow nail growth rate, nail growth in these patients ('bad responders') and in two individuals, both affected with psoriasis, who had previously responded favorably ('good responders') to topical 5-FU for their nail condition were compared. The results of nail growth measurement revealed that mean longitudinal growth in 'bad responders' was lower than that in 'good responders'. In con

Yellow nail syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disorder of unknown cause characterized by the triad of yellow and thickened nails, lymphedema and respiratory manifestations. We review the current state of knowledge, particularly regarding the diagnosis and management of this disorder. RECENT FINDINGS: Available data suggest acquired lymphatic dysfunction to be the predominant mechanism underlying the clinical manifestations of YNS. The clinical features are variable among individuals diagnosed to have this disorder, and these features can vary over time. Although many disorders h

Nonclassical yellow nail syndrome in six-year-old girl: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The yellow nail syndrome is usually described as the combination of yellow nails with lymphoedema and often with respiratory manifestations such as pleural effusions, chronic sinusitis and bronchiectasis. The syndrome is most often seen in the middle-aged individuals. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 6-year-old girl with yellow nail syndrome having pansinusitis and bronchiectasis. CONCLUSION: The components comprising the classical triad of yellow nail syndrome in children may not necessarily be present altogether. Therefore, yellow nail syndrome should be suspected in children

Yellow nail syndrome following thoracic surgery: a new association?

An 80-year-old man presented with the characteristic triad of yellow nail syndrome (chronic respiratory disorders, primary lymphedema and yellow nails) in association with coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Treatment with mechanical pleurodesis and vitamin E resulted in near complete resolution of the yellow nails, pleural effusions, and lower extremity edema. The etiology of the yellow nail syndrome has been described as an anatomical or functional lymphatic abnormality. Several conditions have previously been described as associated with this disease. This is the first report of the assoc

[Yellow nail syndrome: case report].

The yellow nail syndrome is a rare disease, in which there is a triad of lymphedema, pleural effusion and slow-growing dystrophic yellow nails. Many associations have already been described; among them, chronic respiratory tract diseases, autoimmune disorders, malignancies and immunodeficiency conditions. Only one third of cases in the literature show all findings. The case reported next is an example of the classical triad.

Yellow nail syndrome as a cause of unexplained edema.

Yellow nail syndrome is a rare cause of edema due to a disordered lymphatic drainage. We recently observed two cases of long-standing, chronic edema, whose nature could not be understood despite innumerable diagnostic procedures. The diagnosis was suspected based on an attentive clinical exam and confirmed by radionuclide lymph scan. Yellow nail syndrome has to be considered in the differential diagnosis in cases of systemic edema, as well as long standing pleural effusions, particularly in patients with bronchiectasis or sinusitis. Clues to diagnosis are the presence of dystrophic, yellowish
