Yellow Nail Syndrome and Nail Lichen Planus may be Induced by a Common Culprit. Focus on Dental Restorative Substances.

Different clinical appearances such as Yellow nail syndrome and Lichen planus or lichenoid reactions can originate from close or identical etiologies. They may result from dental restorative materials or metal allergy. Interestingly, the nail sometimes returns to its normal condition, months after the withdrawal of the offending agents.

Atypical presentation of congenital yellow nail syndrome in a 2-year-old female.

BACKGROUND: Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare clinical entity of unknown etiology that is characterized by a triad of yellow nails, respiratory manifestations, and lymphedema. The condition appears in the mid- to later years of life and only rarely in childhood. We describe a rare case of YNS with an atypical clinical presentation consisting of only yellow and dystrophic nails in a 2-year-old female since birth. OBJECTIVE: A case of congenital YNS with only dystrophic and yellow nails is reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 2-year-old female presented with yellow nails since birth. There was

Defying gravity: subdiaphragmatic causes of pleural effusions.

Intra-abdominal fluid may migrate readily into the pleural space through naturally occurring holes in the diaphragm or intradiaphragmatic lymphatics. Although any type of fluid in the abdomen may migrate, additional pathologic mechanisms are involved in the development of chylous ascites/chylothorax, yellow nail syndrome, urinothorax, pancreaticopleural fistulas, or other connections. In the differential diagnosis of the large list of potential pleural fluid causes, intra-abdominal sources should be entertained by the practicing physician in the right clinical context.

[Enigmatic lymphatic diseases involving the lung].

Lymphedema associated with other developmental malformations (Milroy syndrome, Hennekam syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Gorham-Stout syndrome, yellow nail syndrome) are unfrequent disease, but explorations led to the identification of genetic mutations that have then been validated in mouse models. However, lymphatic vessels complexity and its proximity with the venous system suggest the need for further researches, especially in the comprehension of pulmonary symptoms.

Nail abnormalities associated with systemic pathologies.

Nail abnormalities can arise in conjunction with or as a result of systematic pathologies. These pathologies include single-organ diseases, multisystemic diseases, and drug-induced insults. Clinical signs associated with these conditions include dyschromias, vascular alterations, periungual tissue changes, textural dystrophies, contour alterations, and growth-rate alterations. The associated systemic pathologies may affect any part of the nail apparatus, including the nail matrix, the nail plate, the nail bed, the underlying vasculature, and the periungual tissues. The anatomical location and

Yellow nail syndrome: clinical experience in a series of 21 patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The pathogenesis and the therapy of the yellow nail syndrome (YNS) are poorly defined. Our aim was to assess the clinical features, associated diseases and response to treatment of patients with YNS, to help clinicians to better diagnose and treat YNS patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied the medical records of all patients with YNS diagnosed at the Outpatient Nail Clinic of the University of Bologna in the last 28 years. All patients were re-evaluated to assess the evolution of the disease. RESULTS: We diagnosed YNS in 21 patients; average age was 57 ± 12.3 y

A 24 year-old male with yellow nail syndrome having bronchiactasis without pleural effusion as a pulmonary manifestation.

Yellow nail syndrome is a rare entity of unknown etiology. Classically, it consists of a triad of slow-growing yellow nails of fingers and toes, lymphedema, and pulmonary manifestations mainly pleural effusion. Other pulmonary manifestations also have been described in the literature such as bronchiectasis, recurrent pneumonias, bronchitis, and sinusitis. This paper describes a case of yellow nail syndrome which did not have the classic triad of the condition; he presented with progressive yellow hand and toe nails intermittent lymphedema, bronchctasis, and sinusitis without pleural effusion.

T and B cell deficiency associated with yellow nail syndrome.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disorder of unknown aetiology that is characterized by yellow nails associated with lymphoedema and chronic respiratory manifestations. There are no detailed immunological studies in YNS. In this study, we present first extensive immunological analysis of both adaptive and innate immunity in two patients with YNS. One patient has common variable immunodeficiency, whereas second patient has specific antibody deficiency syndrome. Severe lymphopaenia, a striking deficiency of naïve CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and total B cells, and increased transitional B cells wer

[Pleuritis in yellow nail syndrome].

A 76-year-old man presented clinically with coughing and shortness of breath and was diagnosed radiologically to have massive pleural effusion as a combined feature of yellow nail syndrome. A lung biopsy was taken and revealed histologically: chronic non-specific inflammation in the pleuropulmonary border, intrapleural edema with eightfold pleural thickening in comparison to normal, angiogenesis in both the nutritive and functional intrapleural blood vessels, no abnormalities of lymphatic vessels with normal topographical distribution as detected by immunohistochemistry for antibody D2-40, gra

[Yellow nail syndrome in a patient with membranous glomerulonephritis].

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a condition characterized by yellow-green coloration of nails, respiratory manifestations and lymphoedema. This article presents 52-year-old patient with membranous glomerulonephritis, hospitalized at the National Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Research Institute in Warsaw, because of suspected allergic aspergillosis. Based on clinical and radiological evaluation the diagnosis of YNS was established. Treatment of renal disease did not affect the course of yellow nail syndrome. During the two-year follow-up, despite stable renal parameters we observed the progressi

[The yellow nail syndrome: a series of five cases].

INTRODUCTION: The yellow nail syndrome is a rare disorder described for the first time in 1964. The pathophysiology remains unclear. Its definition is based on a clinical triad of yellow nails, lymphoedema and chronic respiratory disorders including pleural effusions and bronchiectasis. CASES REPORTS: We describe a retrospective series of five patients diagnosed with the yellow nail syndrome. All the patients were male, aged from 52 to 71 years (median=56). Three patients were diagnosed with the classic triad, whereas the other two had only yellow nails and bronchiectasis. Yellow nails and ch

Nails: diagnostic clue to genodermatoses.

Nails are cutaneous appendages mostly involved in mechanical functions. However, nails may reflect presence of various systemic disorders evidenced by alteration of their shape, size, color or texture. Genodermatoses are multisystem disorders with cutaneous involvement. Many of the genodermatoses present with nail changes and some of these may be the clinical pointers to the diagnosis. Diagnostic clues to various genodermatoses derived from nail findings have been discussed.

Recurrent pleural effusion in yellow nail syndrome successfully treated with video-assisted thoracic surgery: comparison of two surgical strategies in two cases.

Pleural effusions as part of the yellow nail syndrome (YNS) can often be recurrent, requiring multiple thoracocentesis. The optimal surgical treatment of such recurrent effusions remains unclear and various methods including thoracoscopic pleurodesis, pleuroperitioneal shunts and pleurectomy have been described. We report two cases of recurrent pleural effusions in YNS, the first case with bilateral effusions and the second with right-sided effusions treated 2 months apart from bilateral long-term tunnelled catheters and thoracoscopic pleurectomy and compare the results of the two treatment st
