BACKGROUND Appropriate recommendations for the management of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) should be carefully followed. A significant adverse effect can develop unexpectedly, and off-label drug use may control this adverse effect and other lupus manifestations. The current research in lupus relies solely on multiple composite outcome measures, which vary from one study to another. However, the optimal drug for a particular lupus symptom is presently unclear, requiring additional research for definitive clarification. CASE REPORT Here, we report a typical case of SLE in a 54-year-old Saud

Alopecia universalis (AU) is a severe form of alopecia areata characterized by the complete loss of scalp and body hair. While Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors like baricitinib have shown promise in promoting hair regrowth in severe cases of AU, unexpected side effects, such as hair depigmentation, have not been widely reported. We present the case of a young male with AU who experienced progressive and extensive whitening of his scalp and body hair following treatment with baricitinib. After one month of therapy, the patient observed both black and white hairs emerging, which gradually turned en

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem autoimmune disorder affecting melanocyte-containing tissues such as the eyes, ears, central nervous system, and skin. A 55-year-old Japanese male presented with an 8-week history of increasing diffuse hair loss. A physical examination revealed diffuse alopecia of the scalp. He lost all body hair, including the eyebrows and eyelashes. All the remaining scalp hair was white, but no vitiligo was present. Laboratory examination found nearly normal values and the HLA profile was DR4. The patient was initially diagnosed with alopecia universalis an

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune condition characterized by sudden and unpredictable hair loss, with a lifetime incidence of 2%. AA can be divided into three categories: patchy alopecia, alopecia totalis, and alopecia universalis. It can affect a person's psychological health and overall quality of life. Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the liver may indicate an inflammatory response in autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D, essential for immune system control and skin health, may be related to AA. Hair follicles contain vitamin D receptors, which control immunological res

Alopecia areata totalis and universalis are disabling conditions and therapeutically challenging as they are refractory to conventional options. Tofacitinib is a Janus-kinase (JAK) inhibitor utilized to treat alopecia areata (AA) as an off-label drug. In India, FDA-approved JAK inhibitors such as baricitinib and ritlecitinib are not available. There are only a few case reports on tofacitinib in AA in the Indian population. We present the data of 9 pediatric cases of clinically and histologically proven alopecia areata totalis (AT) and alopecia universalis (AU), for whom oral tofacitinib was gi

INTRODUCTION: Acute shoulder pain is among the most common presenting complaints in the clinic. Clinicians may find it challenging with the myriad of potential etiologies to explain for the presenting complaint. We present a unique case, where a herpes zoster infection in the C6 dermatome mimicked the presentation of rotator cuff pathology and was admitted to the care of orthopedics. We have also included a detailed literature review on the topic in our study.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 38-year-old Chinese female who presented with acute atraumatic right-sided shoulder pain and weakness w

Alopecia areata (AA) is a cell-mediated autoimmune disease in which a cytotoxic T-cell response against hair follicles occurs. AA has been demonstrated to frequently co-exist with atopic dermatitis (AD), and the coincidence of atopy predisposes to a more severe course of the disease. To date, therapeutic options in AA, especially in the pediatric population, are mainly limited to corticosteroids, irritants, sensitizers, and immunosuppressive agents. Recently, innovative therapies have emerged, among which Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, effective in both AD and AA, appear to be the most promisi

BACKGROUND: Several cutaneous manifestations in patients undergoing COVID-19 vaccination have been described in literature.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we present a case of alopecia universalis that occurred after the first and second dose of Comirnaty vaccine. A bibliographic search was conducted and a total of 14 studies concerning the association were reviewed.
CONCLUSIONS: Given the autoimmune pathogenesis of the disease, we discussed the potential role of SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination as a trigger for the development of hair loss. Physicians should be aware of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease resulting in non-scarring hair loss. Alopecia areata can progress to become alopecia totalis (loss of hair from the entire scalp) or alopecia universalis (loss of hair form the entire body), with the progression estimated to range from 7% to 30%. There are no universally proven therapies that both induce and sustain remission, and furthermore, the course of alopecia areata tends to be unpredictable, with ~80% of patients achieving spontaneous remission within 1 year. We herein present the case of a 61-year-old female who presented with a 20-year history

COVID-19 vaccines have positively changed the course of the pandemic. They entered the market after only one year of the initial trials, which that yielded positive results in terms of safety and efficacy. However, after inoculating billions of people in the most extensive vaccination campaign worldwide, mild but common and some rare but potentially fatal adverse events have been reported. Among several self-reported adverse events, hair loss and alopecia have been linked to COVID-19 mRNA or viral vector vaccines. We tracked and followed a series of five cases with post-vaccine telogen effluvi

IMPORTANCE: Alopecia areata (AA) is characterized by nonscarring hair loss of the scalp, face, and/or body. Alopecia totalis (AT) and alopecia universalis (AU) involve complete loss of the scalp and body hair, respectively. The epidemiology of AA in the US remains unclear, having previously been extrapolated from older studies that were limited to specific geographic areas or clinical settings, or from self-reported data.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the annual prevalence and incidence of AA and AT and/or AU (AT/AU) in the US.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective, population-based

Alopecia areata is a non-scarring, autoimmune hair loss disorder that is associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Alopecia areata and inflammatory bowel disease may have a common pathogenic mechanism that involves the Janus kinase/STAT pathway. In addition, there are previous case reports of patients who developed alopecia areata while on biologic therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. JAK1 inhibitors are currently undergoing investigation as potential therapies for Crohn's disease. Upadacitinib, an oral JAK1 inhibitor, has demonstrated efficacy in treating Crohn's disease during phase I

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated nonscarring hair loss disorder with multiple subtypes, including alopecia universalis (AU). Previous studies have shown a link between serum lipid profile and alopecia. We aimed to investigate the frequency of fatty liver in patients with AU and patchy alopecia areata (PAA) compared to a control group.
METHODS: This case-control study included patients with AU and PAA referred to a dermatology clinic from September 23, 2019 to September 23, 2020. A group of individuals without hair loss disorders attending the same clinic were selected as

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune condition that causes a non-scarring form of hair loss. It is associated with several viruses and diseases. One of the viruses that have been linked to alopecia areata is the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). It was found to cause the onset, aggravation, or recurrence of alopecia areata in previously infected patients. We report the case of a 20-year-old woman who was medically free and presented with the severe and progressive onset of alopecia areata after one month of contracting COVID-19. This study aimed to explore the literature on COVID-19-as
