Efficacy of Local and Whole-Body Phototherapy for the Treatment of Various Types of Alopecia Areata.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring autoimmune hair loss disorder. Although phototherapy has been utilized to treat AA, its efficacy and mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of phototherapy in AA and determine whether treatment outcomes vary depending on patient characteristics. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 49 patients with various types of AA who received at least 10 sessions of either local or whole-body phototherapy. The severity of hair loss was assessed using the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score. Patient demographi

Clinical characteristics, subtype classification, and prognostic factors of ophiasis: A retrospective study of 150 patients with therapeutic implications.

BACKGROUND: Ophiasis is an uncommon, clinical heterogeneous, and therapeutically challenging presentation of alopecia areata (AA). Evidence guiding meaningful subtyping and its implications for management remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical, trichoscopic, and histopathologic features of ophiasis and evaluate a novel subtype classification for prognostic and management relevance. METHODS: A retrospective study of 150 patients with ophiasis was performed. Clinical, trichoscopic, and histopathologic data were collected and compared with patchy AA, acute diffuse and total al

Alopecia Areata: Advances in Clinical Evaluation and Pathogenesis.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune condition that affects approximately 2% of the global population. Although it most commonly presents with the abrupt onset of well-circumscribed, non-scarring alopecic patches on the scalp, the nails and other hair-bearing areas are also frequently affected. Clinical evaluation should document disease extent and employ trichoscopy to identify characteristic signs of the condition (e.g., black-dot hairs, exclamation point hairs). The Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) is standard for quantifying severity, and newer instruments like the Alopecia Areata S

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Predictive factors for treatment responses to baricitinib in severe alopecia areata: A retrospective, multivariate analysis of 70 cases from a single center.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic, autoimmune skin disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss. Baricitinib, a Janus kinase inhibitor (JAKi), prevents hair loss and promotes hair regrowth by inhibiting the inflammatory Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) signaling pathway involved in cytotoxic T cell responses targeting hair follicles. The introduction of JAKi has transformed treatment against severe AA. However, treatment responses to JAKi are highly variable among patients, and the predictors of responsiveness remain insufficiently elucidated. This st

Case Report: Severe ophiasis-pattern alopecia areata with concomitant atopic dermatitis in a 5-year-old boy successfully treated with dupilumab.

Alopecia areata (AA) is the third most common reason for dermatological consultations among children. Despite the availability of numerous therapies for AA, including topical and systemic modalities, management options for children diagnosed with severe AA are limited due to the lack of safe and effective treatments suitable for long-term use. Herein, a case involving a 5-year-old boy with severe ophiasis-pattern AA and moderate atopic dermatitis (AD), who was successfully treated with dupilumab, is reported.

Evaluation of SALT score severity in correlation with trichoscopic findings in alopecia areata: a study of 303 patients.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune non-scarring type of hair loss characterized by round patches on the scalp or body. AA is the second most common form of hair loss after male-pattern baldness in men, and female-pattern baldness in women. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to examine the correlation between trichoscopic patterns and AA severity, evaluated by the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score, and to analyze the impact of demographic and clinical factors on treatment outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional single-center study was conducted i

Macular Alopecia: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study to Describe an Underrecognized Pattern of Alopecia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prototypical non-scarring alopecia is alopecia areata (AA), which can present in multiple forms on the scalp, including patchy, ophiasis, sisaipho, diffuse, and totalis. Not included within current alopecia classification systems is a variant characterized by macules < 1 cm in diameter. Our objective was to identify and describe this variant of alopecia not previously recognized. METHODS: We conducted an institutional review board-approved, single-center retrospective chart review of patients presenting with hair loss to a pediatric dermatology clinic. Potential sub

Recognizing ophiasis pattern in discoid lupus: a rare diagnostic challenge.

Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune condition that can present in both cutaneous and systemic forms, with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) being the most prevalent type of chronic cutaneous lupus. Although the ophiasis pattern is well documented in alopecia areata, we present a rare case of DLE exhibiting this pattern in a 51-year-old Saudi female patient with a complex medical history, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This case underscores the importance of recognizing atypical presentations of DLE, which can lead to misdiagnosis and delays in treatment. We aim to enhance aware

Criteria for Commencing and Continuing Subsidised Janus Kinase Inhibitor Therapy in Australian Alopecia Areata Patients-Results From an Australian Expert Consensus Exercise.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) have been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for severe alopecia areata (AA) in Australia. However, access is limited as JAKis are not currently subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for this indication. This study aimed to establish expert consensus on criteria for initiating and continuing subsidised JAKi therapy for AA. METHODS: An eDelphi study was conducted with 26 Australian specialists in hair and scalp disorders, who participated in two online survey rounds. A third round, held as a virtual meeting, facili

Comparing Outcomes and Risks of Multiple Gestations: Assisted versus Spontaneous Conceptions.

BACKGROUND: Multiple gestations are increasingly prevalent worldwide, largely due to the rising use of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Compared with singleton pregnancies, they are associated with substantially higher maternal and neonatal risks, including preterm birth, pregnancy complications, and adverse neonatal outcomes. However, regional data are limited, particularly from Saudi Arabia, where cultural, demographic, and healthcare system factors may uniquely influence these outcomes. Addressing this gap is essential to improve obstetric care, support patient counseling, and inform
