BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune condition characterized by sudden and unpredictable hair loss, with a lifetime incidence of 2%. AA can be divided into three categories: patchy alopecia, alopecia totalis, and alopecia universalis. It can affect a person's psychological health and overall quality of life. Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the liver may indicate an inflammatory response in autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D, essential for immune system control and skin health, may be related to AA. Hair follicles contain vitamin D receptors, which control immunological res

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) affects approximately 2% of the general population and is associated with significant psychosocial morbidity and poor health-related quality of life. Despite the high incidence of the disease the available clinical practice guidelines to help clinicians and improve patients' care are very poor and of a low methodological quality, as compared to other high-burden dermatoses. The aim of this survey is to capture the current clinical practice in AA management, as performed by dermatologists, in two Mediterranean countries to identify potential disparities and ga

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata exhibits diverse clinical forms, encompassing the less common variant, sisaipho. Clinical observations suggest its unique ability to emulate both male and female pattern hair loss, implying a potential androgenic influence akin to androgenetic alopecia.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: Herein, we present 3 cases of alopecia areata in adults exhibiting a male or female pattern distribution or accentuation.
CONCLUSION: To improve diagnosis and differential diagnosis of alopecia, the term "alopecia areata in a male or female pattern distribution" may be introduced as a new clin

Alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune inflammatory disorder causing non-scarring hair loss, predominantly affects the adult population and is rarely encountered in young infants and neonates. The etiology of this condition remains multifactorial, involving complex interactions between genetic, autoimmune, and environmental factors. In this report, we present a notable case of a four-month-old infant who presented with distinct band-like hair loss on the right inferior lateral forehead, left inferior lateral forehead, and superior middle forehead following a culturally significant head-shaving ri

BACKGROUND: Janus kinase (JAK) activation is suggested to have a pathological role in alopecia areata (AA). CTP-543, a deuterated compound that selectively inhibits JAK1 and JAK2, is being developed as an oral treatment for AA.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of a 24-week regimen of CTP-543 in patients with chronic, moderate-to-severe AA.
METHODS: In this phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, sequential-design trial, patients were randomized to receive CTP-543 (4 mg, 8 mg, or 12 mg) or placebo every 12 hours for 24 weeks.
RESULTS: A dose-related increase was ob

BACKGROUND: Marginal alopecia presents itself frequently in dermatological practice. For patients who present peripheral scalp hair loss, cicatricial and non-cicatricial alopecia should be considered, such as ophiasis, traction alopecia and frontal fibrosing alopecia. In spite of the several types of hair loss that have been described in cutaneous lupus erythematosus, the 'pseudo-fringe sign' had never been observed in such patents.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims at including the 'pseudo-fringe sign' as another possibility of clinical manifestation in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia is lymphocytic scarring alopecia most commonly affecting postmenopausal women. Alopecia syphilitica, an uncommon manifestation of secondary syphilis, is characterized as a nonscarring and non-inflammatory hair loss that primarily affects the scalp. Frontal fibrosing alopecia has a classic pattern of hair loss involving regression of frontotemporal hair; it also may affect the eyebrows or other sites of the body. The typical patterns of frontal fibrosing alopecia are characterized as diffuse and linear. In addition, patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia can have at

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune skin disease caused by chronic inflammation of hair follicles. Chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and lupus erythematosus can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, the relationship between AA and heart diseases (HDs) remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this retrospective cohort study to evaluate the risk of subsequent HDs in patients with AA. We reviewed 3770 cases of AA and from 18,850 age, sex, and income level-matched controls from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. In the subgroup analy

The aim of this study was to evaluate metabolic syndrome prevalence in patients with Alopecia Areata compared to controls. Sixty eligible patients with Alopecia Areata and 60 healthy subjects frequency matched for age and sex attending to our referral dermatology clinics from 2015 to 2017 were enrolled. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components were compared between the two groups. Metabolic syndrome was only seen in seven patients (11.67%) and four controls (6.67%) without a significant difference (P = .34). The clinical presentations of AA included patch type (38.33%), ophiasis (6.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a T cell-mediated autoimmune disease resulting in the destruction of hair follicles. Ophiasis refers to a subtype of AA that presents as a symmetric, band-like hair loss pattern of the occipital, temporal, and parietal regions of the scalp. We present a case of a 58-year-old white man with AA, ophiasis pattern, who was treated with clobetasol 0.05% solution and four treatments of microneedling with triamcinolone over 6 months. He underwent gradual improvement, most notably on his left occipital scalp where his hair loss was most prominent, with near complete hair regrow
