Allergic Adverse Reactions Following Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccination in Children with Food Allergy: A Prospective Multicenter Study.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and risk factors of allergic adverse reaction following measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination in children with egg and/or cow's milk allergies. Methods: Children with cow's milk and/or egg allergy were included. Patients with IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy were subjected to skin tests with MMR vaccines before vaccination. For patients with a positive skin test, administration of an alternative vaccine not containing the suspected excipient was planned. In case an alternative vaccine is not available, the MMR vaccine is plann

Measles is misery: A brief update for paediatricians.

Measles is an important vaccine-preventable disease that has re-emerged in recent years. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, interruptions to routine immunisation programs and declining vaccine coverage have altered the incidence and patterns of respiratory virus infections. Global outbreaks have intensified, and vaccine hesitancy is recognised as major health threat. Revisiting the clinical presentation of measles is crucial for early diagnosis and to reduce transmission of this highly contagious infection. As serious respiratory and neurological complications can follow natural infection and no spe

Molecular diagnostics in cancer patients with suspected respiratory mold infections.

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs), including aspergillosis and mucormycosis, are serious complications in cancer patients. Reliable detection of etiologic agents is challenging but important for optimal patient management. In a prospective multicenter study, we compared fungal detection by culture, specific and unspecific qPCRs, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting Aspergillus and Mucorales in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum of adult cancer patients with suspected fungal pneumonia. In subgroups of patients, fungal DNA was amplified from serum. We evaluated 210

Descriptive Analysis of Measles Transmission Among Travelers During Domestic and Inbound US International Air Travel, 2018-2019.

Measles is highly transmissible and can lead to severe complications and mortality risk. Cases of measles are reportable to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This study describes characteristics of travelers who flew while infectious with measles and their contacts. We analyzed data from domestic and US inbound international flights reported between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019. To identify contacts potentially exposed to measles during air travel we used the CDC-defined measles contact zone and crossmatched with the CDC measles database. We conducted a descrip

Mumps in Poland in 2023.

BACKGROUND: Mumps is a viral disease primarily transmitted by infected individuals. A milestone in controlling mumps in Poland was the introduction of mandatory MMR vaccination in 2003, protecting against measles, mumps, and rubella. Since then, the incidence has decreased substantially, and complications have become rare. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to conduct an epidemiological assessment of the incidence of mumps in Poland in 2023 compared to previous years, taking into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis of the epidemiological situation

Measles in Pregnancy: Clinical Considerations and Challenges.

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the measles virus. Recent declines in population-level immunity and outbreaks linked to imported cases have led to the highest U.S. incidence of measles since its elimination in 2000. Measles infection during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of pneumonia, need for respiratory support and mortality, prematurity, and stillbirth. Although perinatal transmission is rare, congenital measles is linked to higher infant mortality. No licensed antiviral therapies or curative treatments exist, making prevention critical. Measles-cont

The shadow of reactogenicity: Parental hesitancy due to prior vaccine experiences.

Vaccination has dramatically reduced the global burden of pediatric vaccine-preventable diseases, yet a decline in immunization rates in recent years has led to the re-emergence of diseases once nearing eradication, such as measles and pertussis. This trend is of particular concern for children with chronic conditions or those who are immunocompromised, as they face elevated risks of severe illness and complications. Parental vaccine hesitancy (PVH) plays a central role in this decline and is a multifactorial phenomenon shaped by demographic and socioeconomic factors, the child's health condit

Preventable Pulmonary Sequelae of Measles: A Case Report of an Adult Patient With Cystic Bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic structural lung disease characterized by irreversible bronchial dilation and persistent productive cough. In non-cystic fibrosis cases, post-infectious etiologies must be considered. Measles, a preventable and highly contagious viral illness, can cause transient immunosuppression, predisposing individuals to secondary infections and long-term pulmonary complications, including non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Vaccination against measles significantly reduces the incidence of pulmonary complications, including pneumonia, and consequently the occurrence of bronchie

Deep learning model for hair artifact removal and Mpox skin lesion analysis and detection.

Accurate identification of Mpox is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. However, traditional image-based diagnostic methods often struggle with challenges such as body hair obscuring skin lesions and complicating accurate assessment. To address this, the study introduces a novel deep learning-based approach to enhance Mpox detection by integrating a hair removal process with an upgraded U-Net model. The research developed the "Mpox Skin Lesion Dataset (MSLD)" by combining images of skin lesions from Mpox, chickenpox, and measles. The proposed methodology includes a pre-processing step

Pathophysiology of Achalasia.

BACKGROUND: Achalasia is a rare primary esophageal motility disorder of the esophageal smooth muscle, characterized by abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and associated with abnormal, spastic, or absent esophageal body peristalsis. SUMMARY: The primary pathophysiological defect is abnormal esophageal inhibitory nerve function from neuronal death in the esophageal neuronal plexuses and ganglia that control esophageal smooth muscle peristalsis. This is a consequence of an autoimmune cytotoxic insult from molecular mimicry following an intercurrent viral infection, typically h

Emergency department management of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella in pediatric patients.

Public health programs have helped decrease the prevalence and sequelae of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; however, misinformation regarding vaccinations and recent disruptions to vaccination programs have caused outbreaks to occur. Emergency clinicians must be able to readily identify the characteristic presentations of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella, with the goals of optimizing supportive care, limiting the spread of disease, and giving appropriate precautionary advice for complications to patients and their families. This issue provides a review of the clinical features, di
