BACKGROUND: Persistent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (pCIA) is a distressing side effect of antineoplastic agents, imposing significant psychological burdens on cancer survivors. Despite its impact, there are no standardized guidelines for diagnosis, prevention or management.
OBJECTIVES: To establish consensus-based definitions, diagnostic criteria, grading systems and management recommendations for pCIA.
METHODS: A two-round Delphi method was conducted with 15 international experts in supportive oncodermatology and hair diseases from both Europe and the Americas. Statements were rated on a

INTRODUCTION: Drug-induced liver failure (DILI) is one of the causes of acute liver injury (13%-20%), encompassing both predictable and idiosyncratic reactions. While the latter are rare, it can lead to severe liver damage in vulnerable patients. Although topical minoxidil is a widely used treatment for androgenetic alopecia, cases of liver failure linked to its use are extremely uncommon and have not been widely described. This case report discusses the potential for severe liver injury following topical minoxidil application.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is a significant adverse effect that profoundly impacts quality of life. Although numerous medications are implicated, the real-world risk profiles across drug classes and patient demographics remain poorly quantified.
OBJECTIVE: To identify and characterize drugs associated with alopecia using real-world data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).
METHODS: FAERS reports from Q1 2004 to Q4 2024 were analyzed using four disproportionality methods (ROR, PRR, BCPNN, MGPS) to detect signals of drug-alopecia associations. Subgroup analyses were conducted by age,

Graves' disease (GD) is the leading cause of autoimmune hyperthyroidism, though pediatric cases are uncommon. Methimazole (MMI) is the first-line therapy; however, drug-induced lupus erythematosus (DILE) secondary to MMI is rare and may be overlooked. We report the case of a 16-year-old girl with newly diagnosed GD who developed inflammatory polyarthritis, a diffuse pruritic maculopapular rash, and alopecia within 1 week of starting MMI (10 mg/day). Laboratory evaluation showed positive antinuclear antibodies and anti-histone antibodies, reduced complement C3 and low-normal C4, and negative an

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that may lead to scalp involvement, with a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Although most patients with scalp psoriasis do not experience alopecia, alopecia in the context of psoriasis is a multifaceted issue on which studies are limited.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this review was to investigate different types of alopecia in psoriasis and the potential mechanisms.
METHODS: A thorough literature review was performed, focusing on the relationship between psoriasis and alopecia areata (AA), drug-induced alopecia, and pso

OBJECTIVE: Metformin decreases elevated levels of pituitary hormones. Little is known about the association between the reproductive axis and hormonal effects of this drug. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis determines metformin action on prolactin levels in men with prolactin excess.
DESIGN/SUBJECTS/MEASUREMENTS: This prospective cohort study included two groups of men with drug-induced hyperprolactinemia and type 2 diabetes or prediabetes: men with normal hair growth (group A, n = 23) and men with late-onset androgenic alo

INTRODUCTION: Cladribine has been widely recognized as a therapeutic option for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), but there is still a dearth of real-world data regarding its safety profile.
AIM: This study aimed to assess adverse events (AEs) linked to cladribine in MS patients, utilizing data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).
METHOD: AE reports identifying cladribine as the primary suspect drug were extracted from the U.S. FAERS, covering the period from the first quarter of 2019 to the third quarter of 2024. Four disproportionali

Inflammatory alopecia is an increasingly reported side effect of targeted cancer therapies. Here we report one case of inflammatory alopecia secondary to mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitor agent Trametinib in a woman with ovarian cancer. Biopsies of the scalp were consistent with early scarring alopecia compatible with drug-induced alopecia. Significant improvement in hair loss occurred after treatment with intralesional Kenalog (ILK) injections and oral isotretinoin. Though acute alopecia has been described in patients using MEK inhibitors, this is the first reported case

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation is a crucial epigenetic alteration involved in diverse biological processes and diseases. Nevertheless, the precise role of DNA methylation in chemotherapeutic drug-induced alopecia remains unclear. This study examined the role and novel processes of DNA methylation in regulating of chemotherapeutic drug-induced alopecia.
METHODS: A mouse model of cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced alopecia was established. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemical staining for the Ki67 proportion and a mitochondrial membrane potential assay (JC-1) were performed to assess the

Minoxidil is an effective and relatively safe topical drug that is used to treat androgenetic alopecia and other types of alopecia. This active ingredient is used in dermatology as a hair growth stimulant; however, the use of solutions containing minoxidil can be accompanied by a variety of cardiovascular systemic side effects. In this case report, we describe the case of a 23-year-old man who presented with complaints of dizziness, blurred vision, general malaise, fatigue, and feeling pre-syncopal while standing after applying large amounts of topical minoxidil solution for three days in a ro

This case report describes an unexpected occurrence of alopecia areata (AA) in a 55-year-old woman undergoing treatment with upadacitinib for atopic dermatitis. This patient developed AA approximately one year into her upadacitinib treatment for atopic dermatitis. This case highlights possible upadacitinib-induced AA, which has not been reported in the literature. Not only does this case demonstrate the typical timeline for drug-induced alopecia, but it also raises questions about whether upadacitinib can cause drug-induced alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-induced hair loss is one of several causes of hair loss commonly seen in clinical practice, and it is often a daunting task to determine a potential culprit drug when a patient is taking numerous medications. Our objective was to identify drugs responsible for hair loss, using the Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS) database, a compilation of drug-related adverse events (AEs).
METHODS: Using the FAERS database, we queried all domestic reports with the reaction term "alopecia" listed as an AE in patients ≥18 years old from April 1, 1968, to

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that usually presents with erythema, scaly greasy papules, and plaques affecting sebaceous gland-rich areas and predominantly involving the face and scalp. The diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis can often be rendered based on the clinical presentation. However, in certain cases, a biopsy can be useful to distinguish it from clinical mimics such as psoriasis, discoid lupus, and rosacea. Prominent sebaceous gland atrophy without scarring has been well-described as an important and relatively specific clue for psoriatic or drug-induced alopecia.

Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lasseur syndrome (GLPLS) is a rare lichenoid dermatosis classified as a variant of follicular lichen planus, also known as classic lichen planopilaris. The condition is characterized by the triad of cicatricial scalp alopecia, noncicatricial alopecia in the axillary and groin regions, and numerous follicular papules distributed across the body. We present a 64-year-old female with clinically and histologically confirmed GLPLS. Two biopsies were conducted, resulting in lichen planopilaris/ pseudopelade Brocq and lichen planus hypertrophicus. Initial therapy included lorat

Amoxicillin-clavulanate (AC) is an antibiotic widely used for various infections. It has rarely been associated with drug-induced liver injury (DILI), mainly in males 55 or older with associated alcohol consumption or medications causing liver injury. Here we present an atypical case of a 22-year-old female with a past medical history of celiac disease and alopecia areata who was prescribed AC in urgent care for bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy, nausea, and chills. Her nausea and vomiting worsened after taking AC for three days, and she developed jaundice. On workup, she was found to have de
