Scalp Microbiome Alterations in Androgenetic Alopecia: Patterns and Emerging Mechanistic Insights.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common cause of hair loss in men and women, involves progressive follicular miniaturization and reduced hair density. Emerging evidence implicates the scalp microbiome as a potential modifier of this process. Preliminary evidence suggests alterations in microbial communities in patients with AGA compared to the general population, with the most robust finding being an enrichment of Cutibacterium acnes, particularly in males. Increases in Malassezia and reductions in Lawsonella and Corynebacterium have also been described, though results are less consistent

Nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel -induced severe interstitial lung disease in a gastric cancer patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-PTX) is a novel formulation that combines paclitaxel with human serum albumin via nanotechnology. Without the need for solubilizers, it allows for higher safe doses, shorter infusion time, and no premedication for hypersensitivity prevention. nab-PTX has been widely used in the treatment of various solid tumors. Its common adverse reactions include fatigue, alopecia, myelosuppression, etc., while pulmonary toxicity is extremely rare. To date, there are no reports of severe drug-induced interstitial lung disease (DILD) caused by nab-PTX in

Bilateral ovarian steroid cell tumor in a postmenopausal woman with progressive hyperandrogenism.

Severe hyperandrogenism with new-onset virilization in postmenopausal women is rare and often associated with androgen-secreting tumors. Nevertheless, a comprehensive differential diagnosis must be considered, including ovarian hyperthecosis and Cushing syndrome. We report a 71-year-old woman with progressive hirsutism over 1-2 years, presenting with severe hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. Physical examination revealed moderate hirsutism with a score of 15 according to the modified Ferriman-Gallwey scale, androgenic alopecia, dental diastema, macroglossia, and acanthosis. Hormonal anal

Chemotherapy-Induced Toxicities in Pediatric Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Survey Using a Child- and Caregiver-Reported Outcome Tool in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy remains the cornerstone of pediatric cancer treatment, yet its cytotoxic nature often results in chemotherapy-induced toxicities, adverse effects arising from damage to healthy, rapidly dividing cells. Data describing these toxicities from the patient and caregiver perspective are scarce in sub-Saharan Africa. This study assessed the types, severity, and determinants of Chemotherapy-Induced Toxicities among pediatric cancer patients in Tanzania. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted over six months at Bugando Medical Center. Pediatric patients

Chemotherapy and the Skin: Understanding Dermatologic Side Effects.

Background Chemotherapy-induced cutaneous adverse drug reactions (cADRs) represent a frequent and clinically significant component of treatment-related toxicity in oncology. These reactions may range from mild, self-limiting eruptions to more severe presentations capable of compromising patient comfort, adherence to therapy, and overall quality of life. Their clinical heterogeneity reflects variations in drug class, cumulative exposure, and individual susceptibility. Given the increasing use of combination regimens and targeted therapies, systematic characterization of cADRs remains essential

Effectiveness and Safety of Topical Finasteride for Male Androgenetic Alopecia: Real World Data.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Although oral finasteride is effective, concerns about systemic adverse effects have increased interest in topical formulations. Long-term real-world data on topical finasteride monotherapy with objective trichoscopic evaluation are still limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study evaluating the 52-week effectiveness and safety of topical finasteride 0.25% monotherapy in adult men with AGA. Patients receiving other AGA treatments, hair transplantation, or with a history of sexual, moo

Systematic "Head-to-Head" Comparison of Scalp Biopsy Techniques for Alopecia Diagnosis: Diagnostic Adequacy, Efficiency, and Resource Utilization.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia can significantly affect a patient's quality of life, underscoring the clinical importance of the optimal scalp biopsy technique. As histopathology remains the gold standard, selecting the most efficient and resource-conscious biopsy processing technique is essential for delivering high-value care. The optimal processing technique remains controversial. Seven distinct methods reported between 1984 and 2022 exist, but comprehensive head-to-head comparative studies assessing resource utilization have yet to be conducted. This study extends prior comparative investigations by

Microneedle-Based Codelivery of Platycladus orientalis-Derived Extracellular Vesicles and Minoxidil Nanoparticles for Androgenetic Alopecia Treatment.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common hair disorder in which limited follicular drug delivery and an inflammatory and oxidative follicular microenvironment reduce topical efficacy. Herein, we developed a fast-dissolving microneedle (MN) patch of chondroitin sulfate and carboxymethyl chitosan for localized codelivery of Platycladus orientalis leaf-derived extracellular vesicles (PO-EVs) and minoxidil nanoparticles (MXD NPs). PO-EVs were separated and characterized as nanoscale vesicles and were shown to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic activities relevant to hair fol

Shifts in strongylid communities associated with chronic wasting in mountain gorillas.

Host-parasite relationships are typically maintained in a dynamic equilibrium, but disruptions to this balance can lead to clinical disease and population-level health impacts. Chronic wasting, characterized by chronic loss of body condition, alopecia, a browning hair coat and pot belly, is an emerging health concern in mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Deworming of suspected cases has led to marked short-term health improvements, implicating intestinal helminths. To investigate, we analysed faecal samples from human-habituated gorillas collected in 2018 and 2021,

Successful Hair Regrowth in Early Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia With Combination Therapy.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a primary lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia that commonly presents with progressive frontotemporal hairline recession and eyebrow loss. Effective treatment remains challenging. We describe a 36-year-old woman with active postpartum-onset FFA who demonstrated significant improvement following combination therapy, including dutasteride, tofacitinib, and intralesional triamcinolone acetonide. This case highlights the potential benefit of early multimodal therapy in promoting regrowth in FFA, a condition typically associated with irreversible follicular loss.

Hitting pause on chemotherapy-induced alopecia: transient p53 activation as a guardian of the hair follicle.

Chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) is a common and highly visible adverse effect of chemotherapy with substantial psychosocial and quality-of-life burdens. In this issue, Gherardini and colleagues described a targeted strategy to prevent CIA using ALRN-6924, a stapled peptide that transiently activates p53 and induces cell cycle arrest in proliferating TP53 wild-type tissues, such as the hair follicle. In ex vivo human scalp hair follicle culture, ALRN-6924 protected matrix keratinocytes and bulge stem cells from paclitaxel- and cyclophosphamide-induced injury, reducing apoptosis, DNA damage,
