Regenerative Therapies for Cosmetic Dermatology for Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: Skin Aging, Aesthetic Concerns, and Evidence-Based Best Practices.

Diabetes mellitus affects an estimated 589 million adults globally, and cutaneous manifestations occur in up to 70% of affected individuals during the course of the disease. The objective of this narrative review is to examine the intersection of diabetes mellitus, skin aging, cosmetic dermatologic procedures, and regenerative therapies, with an emphasis on evidence-based best practices and clinical considerations. While the impaired wound healing associated with diabetes has been extensively studied, the aesthetic implications of diabetic skin disease remain comparatively underexplored. Indiv

Evidence of Increased 3-Alpha-Androstanediol Glucuronide in Female Pattern Alopecia: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study Evaluating Ovarian, Adrenal, and Peripheral Androgens.

BACKGROUND: The role of androgens in female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is disputed as patients usually have normal androgen levels. 3α-androstanediol glucuronide (3α-diol G) is a marker of peripheral hyperandrogenism, but has not been assessed in FPHL. We aimed to evaluate ovarian, adrenal, and peripheral (3α-diol G) androgens in Indian women with FPHL and correlate them with the clinical severity of FPHL. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in India, involving 44 women with trichoscopically confirmed FPHL and 30 age-matched healthy controls.

An interview-based qualitative study of scalp cooling, alopecia, and disparities in Black breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Existing quality-of-life assessment tools for chemotherapy-induced alopecia may not adequately serve women of all races. Non-White patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy at our institution were approximately six times less likely than White patients to use scalp cooling (SC). OBJECTIVE: This study examines factors contributing to this disparity through interviews with Black women undergoing chemotherapy, focusing on alopecia's impact and attitudes toward its prevention and treatment. METHODS: Semi-structured, 1-hour Zoom interviews were conducted and transcribed. Cont

The Efficacy of Growth Factor Injection in Androgenic Alopecia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss, and current pharmacotherapies have limitations. Autologous platelet-derived therapies, including PRP, its standardized derivative PRGF, and other growth factor concentrates (GFC), have emerged as regenerative options, but differences in preparation and mixed clinical evidence remain. METHODOLOGY: Following PRISMA guidelines, seven databases were searched for randomized and non-randomized studies on intralesional growth factor injections for AGA. Outcomes included hair density, thickness, satisfaction, and adverse e

The Impact of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists on Hair: Beneficial Effects or Adverse Outcomes?

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have transformed the treatment of type II diabetes and obesity. Since their introduction, studies continue to reveal their beneficial effects in a range of other conditions. However, hair loss associated with GLP-1RAs is still a controversial topic. This narrative review explores the current evidence linking GLP-1RAs to hair-related conditions because, while some studies have reported hair regrowth in patients with androgenetic alopecia and a decrease in inflammatory infiltrate in patients with cicatricial alopecia, many more have suggested

675-nm diode laser as an adjuvant treatment for telogen effluvium: case series.

BACKGROUND: Telogen effluvium (TE) is a diffuse, non-scarring alopecia that can have a significant impact on quality of life. Although often self-limited, many patients seek therapies that speed recovery. Photobiomodulatory benefits of the 675-nm diode laser are also well established in treating other hair disorders, but there is limited evidence in TE. METHODS: We performed a retrospective case series of 13 patients diagnosed with TE at a Dermatologic Laser Center in Mexico. The patients received adjuvant treatment with 675-nm diode laser therapy. RESULTS: Of the 13 patients, 69% had chroni

Ischemic Stroke in a Young Adult Male During Finasteride Therapy.

Finasteride, a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor widely prescribed for androgenetic alopecia, is generally considered safe, with most reported adverse effects being sexual or neuropsychiatric in nature. However, recent literature data have raised concerns regarding rare thrombotic complications. The mechanistic basis and clinical relevance of this association remain unclear, particularly in young individuals without traditional risk factors. We report a case of ischemic stroke with left internal carotid artery multilevel stenosis and capsulo-thalamic infarction in a 20-year-old previously healthy ma

A Unique Case of Lupus Erythematosus Profundus Presenting With Localized Scarring Alopecia and Perioral Swelling in a Pediatric Patient.

Lupus erythematosus profundus, also known as lupus panniculitis, is a rare subtype of cutaneous lupus erythematosus characterized by inflammatory involvement of the deep dermis and subcutaneous adipose tissue. It is predominantly reported in adults, whereas pediatric presentations remain uncommon. A five-year-old Middle Eastern girl presented with a two-month history of progressive localized alopecia involving the left parietal scalp, associated with perioral swelling predominantly affecting the upper lip. Examination showed an alopecic patch measuring approximately 4 × 2 cm with reduced folli

Smoldering multiple myeloma in the United States: a population-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary cicatricial alopecias (PCAs) cause permanent hair loss and psychosocial distress. Management involves anti-inflammatory and hair growth-promoting therapies. A combination of tacrolimus, clobetasol, and minoxidil (TCM) may offer synergistic benefits by targeting distinct inflammatory pathways while increasing background hair density for improved camouflage. This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of TCM use in PCA patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of PCA patients aged 18+ years treated with TCM between January 1, 2009, and May 31, 2025. Out

Presentations of Cutaneous Disease in Various Skin Pigmentations: Keratosis Pilaris.

Description Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common benign disorder involving hyperkeratosis of the skin. It is associated with other common dry skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris. Lesions are clinically characterized as symmetrically distributed, monomorphic, folliculocentric, hyperkeratotic papules with a variable degree of perifollicular erythema. The appearance can be likened to spikey bumps that are commonly located on the arms, legs, and buttocks. Awareness of KP is important as every primary care clinician will see patients with this disorder. Identification can

Ghrelin impairs embryo development after ovarian hyperstimulation.

Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) is essential in assisted reproductive technologies, although some studies have associated it with reduced reproductive success. We have recently demonstrated that COH increases circulating ghrelin; however, its role in COH-induced alterations and the potential therapeutic impact of its inhibition remain unclear. Using a murine model, this study evaluated the effects of COH on preimplantation embryo development and implantation and examined whether the COH-induced alterations in these parameters are associated with hyperghrelinemia. Here, we evaluated h

Biologic Therapies and Small-Molecule Inhibitors for Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS) is a chronic, relapsing neutrophilic scarring alopecia within the follicular occlusion spectrum. It shares clinical and pathogenic features with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), acne conglobata, and pilonidal sinus disease, reflecting activation of convergent inflammatory pathways. Therapeutic decision-making is challenging because of the absence of specific guidelines and approved treatments. This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of advanced therapies-including biologic agents and small-molecule inhibitors-in DCS. In additio

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Scalp Following Synthetic Hair Implantation: A Structured Narrative Review and the Seventh Case Reported in Literature.

Synthetic hair implantation was previously employed as a cosmetic treatment for androgenic alopecia but has been associated with delayed complications related to chronic foreign body reactions. We report a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma arising on the scalp at the site of prior synthetic hair implantation, many years after the initial procedure. The patient presented with a persistent, non-healing scalp lesion associated with recurrent inflammation and scarring in the area of previous implantation. Clinical evaluation and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of squamous
