Hair is considered to be a major component of an individual's general appearance. The psychological impact of hair loss results in a measurably detrimental change in self-esteem and is associated with images of reduced worth. It is not surprising that both men and women find hair loss a stressful experience. Genetic hair loss is the major problem affecting men and by the age of 50, up to 50% will be affected. Initial attempts to regenerate the lost hair have centred on applying a topical solution of between 2% to 5% minoxidil; however, the results proved disappointing. Recently, finasteride, a

Hair shedding and hair thinning have been reported to be affected by dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. The present study was conducted in 150 men presenting with telogen effluvium related to androgenic alopecia associated with dandruff. They were randomly allocated to three groups receiving each one of the three shampoos in the market containing either 1% ketoconazole (KTZ), 1% piroctone olamine (PTO) or 1% zinc pyrithione (ZPT). Shampoos had to be used 2-3 times a week for 6 months. Hair shedding during shampoo was evaluated semiquantitatively. Hair density on the vertex was evaluated on p

BACKGROUND: Alopecia mucinosa has been shown to be associated with many benign and malignant conditions. It can be seen in childhood but is seen more commonly in adulthood. Alopecia mucinosa is generally felt to occur in three settings: a primary idiopathic form, a form associated with malignancy, and a form secondary to inflammatory conditions. The histologic hallmark is the accumulation of mucin in the follicular epithelium, called follicular mucinosis. Therapy for alopecia mucinosa remains problematic.
OBJECTIVE: We present a representative case of alopecia mucinosa and discuss the etiolog

Although telogen effluvium, or shedding-the most common type of diffuse hair loss in both women and men-is usually self-limiting, the condition may become chronic if the trigger is not identified and corrected. The authors discuss the physiologic and emotional triggers, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management strategies, including the importance of patient education and reassurance.

p53 is a transcription factor mediating a variety of biological responses including apoptotic cell death. p53 was recently shown to control apoptosis in the hair follicle induced by ionizing radiation and chemotherapy, but its role in the apoptosis-driven physiological hair follicle regression (catagen) remains to be elucidated. Here, we show that p53 protein is strongly expressed and co-localized with apoptotic markers in the regressing hair follicle compartments during catagen. In contrast to wild-type mice, p53 knockout mice show significant retardation of catagen accompanied by significant

The timing regulation of the hair growth phases is quite complex. We name teloptosis the termination of the telogen phase with hair shedding. The initiation of the next anagen I phase is independent from teloptosis. Both events are triggered by distinct factors. Indeed, teloptosis is the result of the loss of adhesion between cells of the club hair and those of its epithelial envelope. Teloptosis synchronization is perceived as telogen effluvium, related or not to shortening of the anagen phase. Subtle changes leading to early or delayed teloptosis affect hair density. It is possible to distin

Hair loss (alopecia) occurs as a manifestation of numerous systemic diseases, but usually can be categorized into one of five general groups: telogen effluvium, anagen arrest, follicular destruction, hair miniaturization, and hair shaft defects. An excess of hair also can be evidence of internal disease, and there are two general categories of increased hair density: hypertrichosis and hirsutism. The basic categories of hair disease and the systemic conditions associated with them are discussed. The history, physical examination, and histopathologic data usually are sufficient to categorize th

Hair loss is a common problem in men and women. Correct diagnosis of hair disorders is complex and requires evaluation of clinical presentation, history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Hair loss may be categorized as hair shaft abnormalities, permanent alopecia, or nonpermanent alopecia. Nonpermanent alopecia, the most common type, includes androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and traction alopecia. The hallmark of this group is the possibility of complete regrowth with adequate treatment.

A 32 year-old woman developed generalised lichenoid eruptions on her body followed by diffuse loss of scalp hair of the anagen effluvium type. She was receiving several anti-tubercular drugs, including rifampicin, isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH), pyrazinamide, and ethambutol, for abdominal tuberculosis. INH, which is a leading cause of drug eruptions in the above group of drugs was withdrawn. However, the other antitubercular drugs were continued along with 40 mg of prednisolone in a single daily morning dose. The latter was discontinued slowly over a period of 10 weeks. There was complete r

One hundred female patients, in the age range of 14-60 years suffering from diffuse hair loss were studied for pattern of aiopecia and probable causes. Pattern of hair loss was of telogen effluvium in 92% patients, androgenetic alopecia in 7% and anagen defluvium in 1%. The probable causes of diffuse alopecia were found to be psychological stress in 30%, fever in 33%, abortion and delivery in 21%, trauma and surgical operation in 13%, and hypothyroidism in 10%. In 57% patients more than two fac-tors, while in 6% no probable cause could be found on the basis of history. Routine laboratory inves

There are 2 stages of alopecia, anagen and telogen effluvium, both of which may be associated with medication-related alopecia. We describe massive hair loss in a 51-year-old woman during treatment with Seroxat (paroxetine), which remitted after it was discontinued. Pathological mechanisms of drug-associated alopecia are complex and have yet to be fully elucidated.

Dr Stannard explains different forms of alopecia in the horse with emphasis on the hair follicle and its function in the production of hairs. Both normal and abnormal patterns of hair growth and shedding in the horse are reviewed. Overviews of several specific hair follicle abnormalities, both inflammatory and noninflammatory, are discussed in detail with their clinical relevance. Some of the clinical entities covered in this section (linear alopecia and alopecia areata) are caused by immunological attack against normal structures and could have been placed in Immunologic diseases. However, be

OBJECTIVE: To describe an organized diagnostic approach for both nonscarring and scarring alopecias to help family physicians establish an accurate in-office diagnosis. To explain when ancillary laboratory workup is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: Current diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for hair loss are based on randomized controlled studies, uncontrolled studies, and case series. MEDLINE was searched from January 1966 to December 1998 with the MeSH words alopecia, hair, and alopecia areata. Articles were selected on the basis of experimental design, with pr

BACKGROUND: When using follicular hair transplantation on patients with early male or female pattern baldness, there can be significant trauma to preexisting hair follicles. This becomes especially important in view of the fact that finastride and minoxidil can stop or slow hair loss.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a system that averts damage to preexisting hair follicles in patients with early male or female pattern baldness.
METHODS: A Lutex headlight (2.5-3.5x loupe magnification system) is used to make 1.0-1.5 mm spear incisions in between the hair follicles in patients with early male or female

Alopecia areata is a common cause of hair loss in children and adults. In most cases, the diagnosis is straight forward and is easily made based on the patient's history and clinical presentation. However, in two specific scenarios, the diagnosis can be difficult and may require a scalp biopsy. We present four cases that illustrate these two problematic differentials: alopecia areata versus trichotillomania in adolescent females; and diffuse alopecia areata versus telogen effluvium versus androgenetic alopecia in adult women. Tables compare and contrast the clinical and histopathologic feature
