L'effluvium télogène actinique: une facette de la chronobiologie humaine.

A seasonal increased hair loss is frequently recognized in clinical practice. However, such an aspect of chronobiology has rarely been documented. To evaluate the seasonal influence on the hair cycle, trichograms of 2857 subjects who complained of an increased hair loss were collected during two consecutive years. An increased frequency of telogen effluvium was observed between July and October. The seasonal effluvium appears to be more summer effect than autumnal in regions whose latitude is over the Tropic of Cancer. The influence of ultraviolet light is possible. It might correspond to an a

Therapeutic approaches to the management of common baldness.

Common baldness or androgenetic alopecia is a universal problem, having affected both sexes of all races to different extents for as long as mankind has existed. The progressive androgen dependent hair loss follows specific patterns and is a physiological process, which may take on disease quality due to psychosocial compontents. These should be taken into consideration when discussing the several treatment options available, particularly as a cure cannot be offered. Cosmetic measures range from back-combing over perms to hairpieces and wigs. Medical therapies include systemic antiandrogens an

Follicular mycosis fungoides.

We describe a patient with follicular mycosis fungoides (MF), a rare folliculotropic variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Follicular involvement in CTCL usually presents clinically as alopecia mucinosa associated histologically with follicular mucinosis. Follicular MF differs from alopecia mucinosa/follicular mucinosis associated with MF with regard to its clinical presentation, histology and, presumably, prognosis. Our patient presented with the characteristic findings of follicular MF, i.e. infiltrated plaques showing numerous enlarged, comedo-like follicular infundibula; histology w

Hair diseases.

A few common causes of hair loss account for the vast majority of cases. A well-directed history and simple physical examination is often sufficient to make a diagnosis. Laboratory testing is often unnecessary. A scalp biopsy can be useful, but only if processed and interpreted correctly. Androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, senescent alopecia, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, trichotillomania, and cosmetic hair damage are common causes of non-scarring alopecia. Discoid lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris, and central, centrifugal scarring alopecia are the most common forms of sca

Acquired scalp alopecia. Part I: A review.

In this two-part series we review the acquired scalp alopecias. A broad spectrum of diseases result in alopecia. In this first part we provide a framework for the assessment and diagnosis of scalp hair loss, and begin covering the individual conditions. The non-scarring alopecias covered include effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, trichotillomania, and loose anagen syndrome. The scarring alopecias cause permanent pilosebaceous follicle loss; the lymphocyte-associated scarring alopecia described encompasses lichen planopilaris, discoid lupus erythematosus, pseudopelade, and folli

Telogen effluvium.

Most of the patients complaining of hair loss do not fit the diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia (AGA). This paper's objective is to describe acute and chronic telogen effluvium (TE), with common occurrences in both sexes and at any age, by clinical and histopathological observation. Acute and chronic TE is described. A possible pathogenic mechanism and a diagnostic approach are suggested, especially to distinguish chronic TE from AGA. Possible therapies are proposed. The recognition of a chronic variant of TE and its distinction from pure AGA, which very often it overlaps, are of paramount imp

Follicular mucinosis associated with scarring alopecia, oligoclonal T-cell receptor V beta expansion, and Staphylococcus aureus: when does follicular mucinosis become mycosis fungoides?

A diagnosis of alopecia mucinosa, occurring as a single scalp lesion, was made in a 40-year-old white woman who had a history of trauma. Follicular mucinosis, Staphylococcus aureus, and oligoclonal expansion of the T-cell receptor V beta chain genes 6 and 7 were present in the skin. Epidermotropic T-cell skin diseases with oligoclonal T-cell proliferations may be the result of HLA- and cytokine-determined reaction patterns to persistent antigens.

Xanthoerythrodermia perstans and alopecia mucinosa in a patient with CD-30 cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Xanthoerythrodermia perstans (XEP) is a distinctive variant of large-plaque parapsoriasis. Along with alopecia mucinosa and lymphomatoid papulosis, there is a strong association between large-plaque parapsoriasis and evolving cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). In some reports, large-plaque parapsoriasis was suggested to be a precursor lesion that converted to CTCL in 10 to 30 percent of cases. We describe a patient who presented clinically with both XEP and alopecia mucinosa and was subsequently shown to have CD-30 CTCL.

Clinical and histopathologic features of hair loss in patients with HIV-1 infection.

BACKGROUND: Hair loss is common in patients with HIV-1 infection, and in black patients this loss may be associated with straightening. Possible causes are frequently present in patients with HIV-1. These causes include chronic HIV-1 infection itself and recurrent secondary infections, nutritional deficiencies, immunologic and endocrine dysregulation, and exposure to multiple drugs. However, histopathologic features have rarely been reported in these patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate the changes in the hairs of a group of these patients and to identify the light microscopic a

Chronic telogen effluvium.

Chronic telogen effluvium is not uncommon. It is a form of diffuse hair loss affecting the entire scalp for which no obvious cause can be found. It usually affects women of 30 to 60 years of age who generally have a full head of hair prior to the onset of shedding. The onset is usually abrupt, with or without a recognizable initiating factor. The degree of shedding is usually severe in the early stages and the hair may come out in handfuls. Chronic telogen effluvium has distinctive clinical and histologic features that are usually diagnostic. Chronic telogen effluvium contrasts with classic ac

Chronic telogen effluvium: increased scalp hair shedding in middle-aged women.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse loss of scalp hair is a common problem in middle-aged women. A segment of these cases represents idiopathic chronic telogen effluvium (CTE). OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to establish distinctive clinical and pathologic criteria for the diagnosis of CTE to facilitate its differentiation from androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and systemic causes of chronic diffuse hair loss. METHODS: A group of 355 patients (346 females, 9 males) with diffuse generalized thinning of scalp hair of unknown origin were classified as having CTE and were included in the study. Characteristically they pr

Alopecia Mucinosa (Follicular Mucinosis) in a Dog.

Abstract- A 10-year-old male Labrador Retriever dog presented with alopecia and scaling that was extensive in the head and limb regions and patchy over the trunk. The major histopathological feature was degeneration of the outer root sheath with disruption of keratinocytes and formation of cystic spaces filled with mucin. A diagnosis of follicular mucinosis was made. This case report represents the first case of this syndrome in the canine species. Résumé- Un Labrador, mâle de 10 ans est présenté pour une alopécie squameuse, extensive, de la tête, des membres, et en "taches" sur le tronc. La l

Drug-induced hair loss and hair growth. Incidence, management and avoidance.

A large number of drugs may interfere with the hair cycle and produce hair loss. Drugs may affect anagen follicles through 2 main different modalities: (i) by inducing an abrupt cessation of mitotic activity in rapidly dividing hair matrix cells (anagen effluvium) or (ii) by precipitating the follicles into premature rest (telogen effluvium). In anagen effluvium, hair loss usually occurs within days to weeks of drug administration, whereas in telogen effluvium, hair loss becomes evident 2 to 4 months after starting treatment. Anagen effluvium is a prominent adverse effect of antineoplastic age

Management of hair loss in women.

Hair loss in otherwise healthy women presents several challenges for the clinician. The first is to identify the cause, which may be complicated by two or more secondary factors; the second is to find effective treatments; and the third is to establish requirements for long-term management. An optimal hair growth potential is considered to exist when specific parameters for biochemical variables are operating. These include red blood cell and serum folate concentrations within the normal range, serum vitamin B12 levels between 300 and 1000 ng/L, hemoglobin levels greater than 13.0 g/dL, and se
