A Scoping Review of Exosome Delivery Applications in Hair Loss.

The objective of this scoping review was to understand the extent and type of evidence found in the current literature on the delivery mechanisms of exosome therapeutics and how these methods can work synergistically with existing treatments for alopecia. Alopecia is primarily characterized as non-scarring or scarring (cicatricial). In cicatricial alopecia, the hair follicles are irreversibly destroyed, causing permanent hair loss. In non-cicatricial alopecia, the hair follicles are undamaged, allowing for possible hair regeneration. Non-scarring alopecia includes androgenetic alopecia, teloge

Menopause and hair loss in women: Exploring the hormonal transition.

Menopause, which is defined as the cessation of menstruation, may be preceded by hormonal fluctuations during the transition to menopause, up to 10 years prior. During this time, hormonal changes, including the relative increase in androgens and the cessation of ovarian estrogen production directly impacts the hair follicle, which is an estrogen-sensitive tissue. These hormonal fluctuations can lead to alterations in the hair shaft and hair cycle, including decreased density, decreased caliber, and changes in hair texture. Additionally, loss of estrogen after the onset of menopause may lead to

Safety First: A Comprehensive Review of Nutritional Supplements for Hair Loss in Breast Cancer Patients.

Among the distressing side effects of cancer treatments, hair loss is one of the most disturbing for the quality of life and adherence to therapy in breast cancer patients. Many patients take nutritional supplements to prevent hair loss or enhance regrowth. Based on their mechanism and timing of use, nutritional supplements could be divided into safe, cautious, debated, and contraindicated categories. Non-contraindicated supplements generally include safe supplements like vitamin D, which is not known to interfere with cancer treatments. Those that are contraindicated include phytoestrogens an

Alopecia in Female Athletes Using Androgenic and Anabolic Steroids: Pathophysiology and Management.

Performance-enhancing substances (PES) are used by many athletes worldwide to improve performance and enhance appearance. Although PES are more commonly used by men, use is increasing among women, leading to growing physical and psychosocial concerns. Illegal PES include androgenic and anabolic steroids (AAS), which represent a diverse class of synthetic derivatives of testosterone. PES use has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine, neurologic, infectious, hepatic, renal, and musculoskeletal disorders. Additionally, hormonal alterations secondary to PES use c

Use of 5% Topical Minoxidil Application for Telogen Effluvium: An Open-Label Single-Arm Clinical Trial.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is an acute and diffuse hair loss due to an abnormal increase in telogen hair follicles in response to external or internal factors. Recently, TE attracts global interest as a major cause of hair loss as a sequela of COVID-19. Typically, hair shedding in TE is expected to cease around 3-6 months from the onset with spontaneous hair regrowth, once the triggering factor is eliminated. However, the substantial shedding causes heavy psychological stress on patients, and there is no evidence-based treatment. To assess the usefulness of topical minoxidil, which has been report

The role of microtrauma in hair regrowth and regeneration in non-scarring alopecia.

Hair loss in both men and women significantly impact quality of life and often has modest treatment outcomes. Recently, microtrauma, which involves small, intentional skin injuries, has emerged as a promising method to stimulate hair growth through immunomodulation in non-scarring alopecias. This review explores the pathogenesis of hair loss, the mechanisms behind microtrauma, various methods of inducing it, and their efficacy in treating non-scarring alopecia. Hair follicles undergo cyclic phases of growth, regression, and rest, influenced by microenvironmental factors, including immune cells

Addressing the Root Causes of Female Hair Loss and Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions.

Female hair loss affects over 50% of postmenopausal women, with up to 40% of healthy women experiencing frontal/parietal hair loss, often beginning around reproductive age. Androgenetic alopecia is the most prevalent form of hair loss. Other types include alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and scarring alopecias, such as lichen planopilaris and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. Hair loss can severely impact a woman's psychological well-being, yet treatments approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) remain limited to topical minoxidil and oral Janus kinase inhibitors. This

Frontiers in the physiology of male pattern androgenetic alopecia: beyond the androgen horizon.

Male pattern androgenetic alopecia (mpAGA), the most common form of hair loss in men, represents a heritable, androgen-dependent complex trait distinct from female pattern hair loss. Despite the psychosocial burden of mpAGA in some affected individuals and associations with other morbidities, we portray mpAGA as an essentially physiological phenomenon in which defined hair follicle (HF) populations in developmentally preprogrammed scalp skin regions undergo a dramatic, but reversible (mini)organ transformation in genetically predisposed individuals. Histologically, mpAGA exhibits progressive H

A Canadian Algorithm on the Management of Telogen Effluvium.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a form of transient hair loss in response to a triggering factor. It is a type of nonscarring alopecia, characterized by a generalized hair loss distribution with thinning of the hair and no exposed patches. It is thought to be induced by numerous stressors that cause hair follicles to suddenly switch from the growing (anagen) phase to the resting (telogen) phase. Treatment of TE consists of identifying the triggers and correcting them. TE is very common and affects men and women, with women being more emotionally and psychologically affected by the hair loss and seek

Amaranthus Extract Promotes Healthy Follicles and Anagen Hair Density-A Randomized Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blinded Study.

Background: A contributing factor to male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is a compromised microcirculation and increased vasoconstriction in the scalp. Since endothelial nitric oxide (NO) was found to act as a vasodilator, our study looked at the efficacy of an amaranthus hair cream in delivering absorbable nitrates to the scalp that would convert to NO resulting in vasodilation and also deliver the nutrients to the scalp. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled parallel arm study of 50 males of 25-45 years. The study included clinically diagnosed MPHL having Norwood class
