Follicular Mucinosis in a Young Male: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Follicular mucinosis (FM), also known as alopecia mucinosa, is an uncommon cutaneous mucinosis defined by the deposition of glycosaminoglycan-rich mucin within the pilosebaceous unit. This abnormal accumulation primarily affects the outer root sheath of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, resulting in follicular epithelial degeneration, inflammatory infiltration, and disruption of follicular architecture. Clinically, FM manifests as erythematous papules, indurated plaques, and localized areas of alopecia. We present the case of a 21-year-old male with a five-month history of a localized foreh

Botulinum Toxin in the Treatment of Hair and Scalp Disorders: Current Evidence and Clinical Applications.

Botulinum toxin (BoNT) is well-recognized throughout dermatology for its cosmetic indications and growing therapeutic value. Recent studies have trialed BoNT in the treatment of hair and scalp disorders, many of which lack long-term effective treatments and significantly impact quality of life. In this review, we summarize the current clinical literature on this topic to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy, safety, and clinical value of BoNT in treating hair and scalp conditions. A literature search on PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus identified 40 articles reporting the use of 25-200 units of BoNT

Polymer-Lipid Hybrid Nanoparticles for Enhanced Gentamicin Efficacy Against Drug-Resistant Bacteria.

PURPOSE: Antibiotic resistance is a critical global health concern, exacerbated by biofilm formation and the declining effectiveness of conventional therapies. This study investigates polymer-lipid hybrid nanoparticles (PLNs) as an innovative nanocarrier system to enhance the antibacterial efficacy of gentamicin (Gen) while overcoming its inherent hydrophilicity and poor encapsulation efficiency. METHODS: Using an optimized double-emulsification/solvent-evaporation technique, PLNs were designed to improve drug encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and loading capacity (DL%). The resulting formulatio

Ayurvedic Treatments for Hair Disorders: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Secondary damage following spinal cord injury (SCI) is closely associated with pyroptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction. Apigenin (API), a natural flavonoid, possesses notable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, whether API can inhibit microglial pyroptosis via the mitophagy pathway, thereby exerting neuroprotective effects, remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which API mitigates post-SCI inflammatory responses through modulation of the mitophagy-NLRP3 axis. METHODS: Neurological recovery was assessed using the Basso, Beattie, and Bre

Applicability of Paediatric Kerrison's Punch in Endoscopic Transcanal Mastoidectomy-Harnessing a Fresh Perspective.

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in the histopathological examination of scalp biopsies is to perform an adequate evaluation of all the hair follicles present in the tissue. Transverse sectioning is currently the preferred technique to demonstrate every follicular structure in a punch biopsy specimen, although diagnostic accuracy is dependent on subjective evaluation of follicular morphology and hair size. OBJECTIVES: To determine if computer-based morphometry and three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction software can be used to evaluate scalp biopsies from patients with non-cicatricial alopec

Status of research on the development and regeneration of hair follicles.

Hair loss, or alopecia, is a prevalent condition in modern society that imposes substantial mental and psychological burden on individuals. The types of hair loss, include androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium; of them, androgenetic alopecia is the most common condition. Traditional treatment modalities mainly involve medical options, such as minoxidil, finasteride and surgical interventions, such as hair transplantation. However, these treatments still have many limitations. Therefore, exploring the pathogenesis of hair loss, specifically focusing on the development an

Is thyroid dysfunction a common cause of telogen effluvium?: A retrospective study.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a common cause of hair loss characterized by excessive resting hair shedding. Thyroid dysfunction is one of the possible causes of TE. On the other hand, the link between thyroid disorder and TE is still being debated. The aim of this retrospective is to investigate the link between thyroid dysfunction and TE. This retrospective study included 500 female patients with TE who had thyroid function testing between January 2012 and December 2022. Patients were eligible if they had a confirmed TE diagnosis and thyroid function tests within 3 months of being diagnosed with

Association of Obesity and Bariatric Surgery on Hair Health.

Obesity and obesity-related conditions today constitute a public health problem worldwide. Obesity is an "epidemic" chronic disorder, which is defined by the WHO as normal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. It is also defined for adults as a BMI that is greater than or equal to 30. The most common obesity-related diseases are type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and certain types of cancer. It has been also proven that obesity can have a negative effect o

Culprits of Medication-Induced Telogen Effluvium, Part 2.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a common mechanism underlying medication-related alopecia. The inciting cause of TE may be difficult to identify due to delays in clinically apparent hair loss. Because medication-induced TE is a nonscarring alopecia that typically is reversible, appropriate management requires identification of the underlying trigger and cessation of potential culprit medications. In part 2 of this 2-part series on medication-induced TE, we focus on anticoagulant and antihypertensive medications.

GLP-1 agonists and hair loss: a call for further investigation.

The widespread adoption of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity has sparked investigations into their impact on hair health, an area characterized by diverse conjectures. Some propose potential risks such as disrupted hair growth cycles or premature androgenetic alopecia (AGA), while others suggest benefits linked to improved insulin sensitivity and enhanced scalp blood circulation. However, despite these theoretical underpinnings, clinical evidence linking GLP-1 agonists to hair loss remains sparse. The necessity for vigilant patient
