Thrombocytosis in a patient with NUDT15 homozygous variant: clues in clinical pharmacogenetics.

A female patient diagnosed with an undifferentiated connective tissue disorder (UCTD) experienced progressive symptoms including hair loss, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain accompanied by haematological changes of anaemia, absolute neutropenia with thrombocytosis following 7 weeks of azathioprine therapy. Consequently, azathioprine was discontinued, resulted in hematologic recovery and hair regrowth. Genetic analysis revealed the presence of an NUDT15 polymorphism, indicating impaired thiopurine metabolism. Hair loss was the first symptom, above all others, indicating an early onset of a

Investigation of Hair Diseases Accompanying Bitemporal Alopecia: An Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: Bitemporal alopecia may occur in association with various hair diseases. However, it has not yet been officially classified as a distinct type of alopecia. This study aimed to identify hair diseases that commonly accompany bitemporal hair loss and to evaluate the clinicodemographic characteristics of affected patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 86 patients aged ≥18 years with bitemporal alopecia. Clinicodemographic characteristics and concomitant hair diseases were recorded. The severity of bitemporal alopecia was classified into three categories: mild, moderate, a

COVID Curls: A Striking Change in Hair Texture Following COVID-19 Infection.

Although hair loss following severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (COVID-19) infection is common, there are no reported cases of textural changes in COVID-19-associated alopecia. Here, we describe a case of diffuse hair loss followed by distinct changes in hair morphology 1 year after symptomatic COVID-19 infection. Clinical findings were most consistent with anagen effluvium. Robust inflammatory response following COVID-19 infection may contribute to changes in hair texture.

Array genotyping of transfusion-relevant blood cell antigens in 6946 ancestrally diverse study participants.

Blood transfusions save millions of lives worldwide each year, yet formation of antibodies against nonself antigens remains a significant problem, particularly in patients who receive frequent transfusions. We designed and tested the Universal Blood Donor Typing (UBDT_PC1) array for automated high-throughput simultaneous typing of human erythrocyte antigens (HEAs), platelet antigens (HPAs), leukocyte antigens (HLAs), and neutrophil antigens to support selection of blood products matched beyond ABO/Rh. Typing samples from 6946 study participants of European, African, Admixed American, South Asi

A case report on azathioprine induced anagen effluvium, plica polonica, and bicytopenia in a patient of vitiligo.

BackgroundAnagen effluvium is described as abrupt hair loss during the anagen phase due to reduced follicular mitotic activity. Chemotherapeutic medicines, toxic metals, and sporadically bismuth, levodopa, colchicine, and cyclosporine are often implicated in etiology. Plica polonica is a rare disorder that develops when the scalp hair mats completely and abruptly, resulting in an extended stiff mass of hair that resembles dreadlocks.ObjectiveWe are describing this case because it is unusual to see plica polonica linked with azathioprine-induced pancytopenia in the literature and since the sour

Anagen Effluvium in a Child Misusing Methotrexate: A Case Report With Dermoscopic Findings.

Anagen effluvium is a rare adverse effect of methotrexate therapy, generally associated with high-dose regimens. We report a 12-year-old girl who developed abrupt hair loss 1 week after inadvertently taking methotrexate 15 mg daily for five consecutive days (total 75 mg), without other signs of systemic toxicity. Trichoscopic examination and trichogram findings confirmed methotrexate-induced anagen effluvium, and spontaneous hair regrowth occurred after 2 months. This case underlines the importance of careful methotrexate dose monitoring and awareness that methotrexate toxicity can be associat

Chitosan Nanoparticles for Topical Drug Delivery in Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia: A Comparative Study of Five Repurposed Pharmacological Agents.

Background/Objectives: Chemotherapy-induced alopecia is a common and distressing side effect of cancer treatment, significantly impacting patients' psychological well-being. Nanocarriers offer a promising strategy for targeted drug delivery to hair follicles, while chitosan nanoparticles have demonstrated hair-growth-promoting properties. This study explores the potential of chitosan nanoparticles as a topical delivery system for five pharmacological agents-phenobarbital, pioglitazone, rifampicin, N-acetylcysteine, and tacrolimus-to prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Methods: Drug-loaded c

Gloriosa superba Poisoning-induced Anagen Effluvium.

Anagen effluvium, the sudden onset of massive hair loss, usually occurs a few days to weeks after an insult like chemotherapy, radiotherapy, toxin exposure, and alopecia areata. Poisonous plant-induced anagen effluvium is a rare clinical presentation. Gloriosa superba is a creeper that abundantly grows in tropical countries such as Africa and South Asia. It is a cash crop with high colchicine content in all its parts. Accidental or deliberate consumption of G. superba tubers is common in tropical countries due to its easy availability. Within hours after consumption, vomiting, abdominal pain,

Hair Loss: Diagnosis and Treatment.

More than 80 million people in the United States are affected by hair loss, also known as alopecia. Nonscarring alopecias are categorized as diffuse, patterned, or focal. Diffuse alopecias include telogen and anagen effluvium, are usually self-limited, and depend on stopping the underlying cause (e.g., stress). Patterned hair loss, specifically androgenetic alopecia, is the most common form of alopecia; it is typically genetic, and first-line treatment is minoxidil. Oral finasteride is another treatment available for male patients. Focal hair loss includes alopecia areata, which is typically s

The Proportion of Catagen and Telogen Hair Follicles in Occipital Scalp of Male Androgenetic Alopecia Patients: Challenging the Established Dogma.

The hair follicle can cycle throughout a lifetime, undergoing periods of growth (anagen), regression (catagen) and relative quiescence (telogen). The time that a hair follicle spends in each of these stages is crucial to determine the length of hair fibre that it produces. Perturbations in this regard can manifest in various hair diseases such as anagen effluvium, or acute and chronic telogen effluvium. The established 'dogma' when considering how many hair follicles there are in each stage has long been that the majority are in anagen (85%-90%), followed by telogen (10%-15%) and catagen (1%-2

Pressure alopecias: A review.

Pressure-induced alopecias (PAs) are an infrequent group of scarring and nonscarring alopecias that occur after ischemic obstruction of capillaries that leads to circumscribed areas of hair loss. Initially described after prolonged surgeries or immobilization, type 1 PA occurs after sustained external pressure to the skin, mainly the scalp prominences. Alopecia induced by cosmetic procedures, referred in this review as type 2 PA, is reported with increased frequency in literature and predominantly emerges from pressure exerted by the volume of injectables. It is important to differentiate type

A Rare Type of Radiation-Induced Alopecia: Proton-Induced Alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced alopecia (RIA) is a side effect resulting from cranial radiation therapy (RT) and it can be temporary or permanent. In cancer patients, RIA is a less frequent event than chemotherapy-induced alopecia, although the former is more likely to cause permanent hair loss. It is characterized initially by intense anagen effluvium caused by acute dose-dependent damage to the matrix cells of anagen follicles. Proton therapy (PT) is a specific type of RT used in the treatment of brain tumors, which sometimes can cause proton-induced alopecia (PIA), a rare subtype of RIA. B
