A 47-year-old Indian woman with dark hair developed dramatic alopecia of the occipito-vertical area two weeks after a fluoroscopically-guided endovascular procedure for treatment of cerebral aneurysm. There was spontaneous repopulation of hair in 14 weeks. Neuro-radiological intervention procedures are becoming commoner by the day in India, and the rare but documented possibility of such reactions occurring in patients should be kept in mind by the treating surgeon as well as dermatologist. Necessary counseling regarding this uncommon side-effect is of essence, especially when the radiation do

The diagnosis of most alopecia problems is based on the clinical history and a well conducted clinical examination. The additional contributions of dermoscopy, trichoscopy and trichogram are helpful. However, a scalp biopsy is occasionally necessary to establish the correct diagnosis. The main noncicatricial alopecias are represented by androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, trichotillomania, traction and pressure alopecia, temporal triangular alopecia, ageing alopecia, loose anagen syndrome, telogen effluvium and anagen effluvium.

Disturbances of hair follicle cycling lie at the heart of most hair growth disorders, and have dramatic effects on visible hair growth and shedding. The two common disorders due to aberration in hair follicle cycling are telogen and anagen effluvium. Though a lot of literature addresses the problem of telogen effluvium, there are not many reviews on anagen effluvium or anagen hair loss. Anagen effluvium is considered synonymous with chemotherapy-induced alopecia and other causes are rarely considered. In this review, we try to discuss the etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, differentials,

Noninflammatory, nonpruritic alopecias are uncommonly encountered in the horse. Alopecia areata, an apparently autoimmune hair follicle bulbitis produces focal, multifocal to widespread hair loss. The skin is otherwise normal. Diseases that can mimic the widespread hair loss associated with alopecia areata include telogen and anagen effluvium, seasonal alopecias, follicular dysplasias (including color dilution alopecia), various nutritional deficiencies and chemical toxicosis, and diseases that result in defective hair shafts (eg, trichorrhexis nodosa and piedra). These problems are differenti

Strontium ranelate is an effective drug that was developed for treating osteoporosis. Here, we report the case of a 62-year-old woman who developed headache and diffuse scalp hair loss 1 week after receiving strontium ranelate treatment for osteoporosis. The treatment was subsequently stopped because of the intractable headache. Nevertheless, the patient continued to lose hair for 6 weeks following treatment discontinuation. Histopathological analysis of scalp tissues revealed anagen effluvium. The patient's hair started regrowing slowly 2 months after treatment with strontium ranelate was dis

Anagen effluvium due to chemotherapy is usually reversible with complete hair regrowth. However, there is increased evidence that certain chemotherapy regimens can cause dose-dependent permanent alopecia. The histological features of this type of alopecia and the mechanisms of its origin are not known yet. We discuss the histological features of 10 cases of permanent alopecia after systematic chemotherapy with taxanes (docetaxel) for breast cancer (6 patients), busulfan for acute myelogenous leukemia (3 patients), and cisplatin and etoposide for lung cancer (1 patient). All patients had modera

Chemotherapy used in the treatment of malignancies produces multiple mucocutaneous adverse reactions that may be clinically challenging. These mucocutaneous reactions are common and sometimes not diagnosed. The objective of this study was to determine the clinical patterns of the mucocutaneous manifestations during and after chemotherapy in children with a hematologic malignancy and to determine whether nutritional status influences the clinical presentation. We recruited patients aged 6 months to 16 years diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma from a pediatric hematology outpatient clinic betwe

A 54-yr-old woman, on azathioprine for interstitial lung disease, developed pancytopenia and presented with sudden onset of extensive hair loss from the scalp followed overnight by appearance of elongated broad mass of uncombable matted hair which had the typical appearance of Plica neuropathica. Microscopic examination of hair clipped from the matted mass revealed irregular, nodal, superficial fractures of the hair shaft resembling Trichorrhexis nodosa and irregular ruffling of the cuticles. The areas of cuticular damage appeared dark under polarized light. Plica neuropathica following pancyt

Few dermatologic conditions carry as much emotional distress as chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). The prerequisite for successful development of strategies for CIA prevention is the understanding of the pathobiology of CIA. The incidence and severity of CIA are variable and related to the particular chemotherapeutic protocol. CIA is traditionally categorized as acute diffuse hair loss caused by dystrophic anagen effluvium; however, CIA presents with different clinical patterns of hair loss. When an arrest of mitotic activity occurs, obviously numerous and interacting factors influence the s

Drugs may cause hair loss, stimulate hair growth, or induce changes in the hair shape and color. Drug-induced hair loss is, in most cases, a consequence of a toxic effect of the drug on the hair matrix. Although a large number of drugs have been occasionally reported to produce hair loss, the relationship between drug intake and hair loss has been proven only for a few agents. Type of hair loss (telogen effluvium, anagen effluvium, or both) depends on the drug, its dosage, and patient's susceptibility. Drug-induced hair loss is usually reversible.

BACKGROUND: Anagen effluvium is a common side effect of chemotherapy, but few studies have examined its clinical characteristics.
OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at evaluating the hair loss caused by chemotherapeutic agents.
METHODS: Sixty-four patients with anagen effluvium were evaluated in the study. Chemotherapeutic agents were classified into 5 different groups. The pattern of hair loss was analyzed when specific involvement of the hairline was obvious.
RESULTS: Forty-six (71.9%) of the 64 total patients maintained hairs along their hairline. Hairs were maintained with a total hairline

Drugs may induce hair loss, stimulate hair growth or, more rarely, induce changes in the hair shape and colour. Drug-induced hair loss is usually completely reversible and is, in most cases, a consequence of a toxic effect of the drug on the hair follicle matrix. In rare cases alopecia may be permanent. Depending on type of drug, dosage and patient susceptibility, hair loss presents as telogen effluvium, anagen effluvium or both. Telogen effluvium is also commonly observed after discontinuation of drugs that prolong anagen, such as topical minoxidil and oral contraceptives. Although a large nu

BACKGROUND: Hair loss from cytotoxic drugs is classically ascribed to the loss of fractured hairs (anagen effluvium). Telogen hair loss has also been described but some authors have denied any effect on the hair cycle. There are conflicting reports on a protective effect of pretreatment with a vitamin D analogue on cytotoxic drug-induced hair loss in rodents.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the process of cytotoxic hair loss and any protective effect on the hair of pretreatment with topical calcipotriol.
METHODS: Breast cancer patients who were about to receive cycles of chemotherapy with cycloph

Hair follicles are unique structures with exceptional regenerative potential. They are believed to be crucial for epidermal homeostasis and reepithelialization after damage to human skin. Like other, more active and quickly proliferating organ systems, hair follicles may be easily disturbed in their normal growth cycle by systemic and local influences, including specific skin diseases. This may lead to hair loss, a very common complaint in men and women. The difficulties in reviewing the diseases of hair follicles lay in the long list of different etiologic factors (infectious, autoimmune, inf

We report a 52 year-old man presenting with an acute considerable hair loss induced by carbamazepine (CBZ). The remarkable scalp hair loss started within a week after CBZ administration. There was no evidence of dermatitis or allergic reaction, or other cause for the hair loss. The serum concentration of CBZ was 8.6 microg/ml (therapeutic range 8-12 microg/ml). CBZ was discontinued, and the hair loss stopped within several days with new hair growth. Medication-induced hair loss is an occasional adverse effect of many drugs used for neuropsychological diseases. CBZ also induces hair loss and it
