Seroprevalence of rubella virus infection among antenatal care clients of Halaba Town public health facilities, southern Ethiopia.

Rubella virus infection during pregnancy has several effects on the developing fetus. However, little is known about the epidemiology of the infection in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the seroprevalence of rubella virus infection on consecutive 299 pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in public health facilities in Halaba Town, Southern Ethiopia. Structured questionnaires were used to collect information on socio-demographic and reproductive characteristics. Venous blood samples were collected, and sera were tested for anti-rubella IgM and IgG using the e

Cutaneous granulomas associated with rubella virus: A clinical review.

Since the initial identification of vaccine-derived rubella virus (RuV) in the cutaneous granulomas of pediatric patients with inborn errors of immunity in 2014, more than 80 cases of RuV granulomas have been reported implicating both vaccine-derived and wild type RuV. Previously thought to arise exclusively in patients with significant immunocompromise, the identification of RuV granulomas in clinically immunocompetent patients adds nuance to our understanding of the interplay between host environment, immune dysregulation, and RuV granuloma formation. This review summarizes the literature on

Lens Coloboma: A Rare Association of Congenital Rubella Syndrome.

Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) may affect all ocular structures in general, either in isolation or in combination. Typical ocular complications in CRS include cataracts, microcornea, microphthalmia, glaucoma, nystagmus, and retinopathy. We report a case of a four-year-old girl who presented with bilateral total cataracts with sensory nystagmus, a poorly dilating pupil, iris hypoplasia, high axial myopia in the right eye (RE), and a retinal detachment in the left eye (LE). The systemic evaluation revealed microcephaly with an associated patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and mild pulmonary arter

Spontaneous Regression of Choroidal Neovascularization in a Girl with Rubella Retinopathy.

Rubella retinopathy is usually a benign disorder with low impact on visual acuity. However, choroidal neovascularization can occur in these patients threatening their vision. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl with rubella retinopathy who developed a neovascular membrane and was successfully managed with observation. Decision to treat or observe in these patients must be carefully weighed, with both options being valid depending mainly on the location of the neovascular complex.

Beyond TORCH: A narrative review of the impact of antenatal and perinatal infections on the risk of disability.

Infections and inflammation during pregnancy or early life can alter child neurodevelopment and increase the risk for structural brain abnormalities and mental health disorders. There is strong evidence that TORCH infections (i.e., Treponema pallidum, Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus) alter fetal neurodevelopment across multiple developmental domains and contribute to motor and cognitive disabilities. However, the impact of a broader range of viral and bacterial infections on fetal development and disability is less well understood. We performed a literature revi

Ocular Involvement in Congenital Infections - TORCH.

This review summarises the ophthalmological findings in congenital infections. Intrauterine infections are an important cause of childhood blindness. The most common infections are grouped under the acronym TORCH, which stands for Toxoplasma gondii, others, rubella, CMV, and herpes simplex. Overall, these infections are not very common in first-world countries during pregnancy, but are of particular importance because of the threat to vision. Diagnosis of infection or reactivation is a gynaecological challenge. However, ophthalmological examination of newborns can be appropriately targeted if

Difficulty in Serologic Screening for Subclinical Rubella during Pregnancy.

In Japan, rubella antibodies are tested in all pregnant women to detect subclinical infections. This study aimed to assess the validity of measuring rubella antibodies for detecting subclinical rubella among pregnant women in Japan. This single-center retrospective study measured rubella hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titers and rubella-specific IgM antibody index (IgM) values. IgM values were measured by conducting enzyme immunoassay, and IgM-values >1.2 were considered positive. Of 14,965 included pregnant women, 186 (1.2%) were IgM-positive. Only one patient was clinically diagnosed with

Seroepidemiology study of rubella virus antibodies among neonates and pregnant women at hospitals in Henan province, China.

Rubella virus infection can cause vertical transmission to the fetus during pregnancy. In China's Henan province, rubella surveillance needs to be well-established. In this research, a total of 1933 neonates and 2502 pregnant women were enrolled, and their sera for IgG and IgM antibodies against rubella were tested by chemiluminescence assay. Of 1933 neonates' sera tested, the seropositive of rubella IgG was 68.7%. The seroprevalence of rubella IgM in neonates was 0.4%. 30.9% of neonates had negative results for IgG and IgM antibodies. Two thousand five hundred and two pregnant women participa

Seroprevalence and risk factors for rubella infection in pregnant women attending a tertiary hospital in Kano-Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: rubella is a leading cause of vaccine preventable birth defects especially in developing countries. Acquisition of infection with the rubella virus in early pregnancy exposes the fetus to a very high chance of developing congenital rubella syndrome. The neonate is born with multiple abnormalities with the triad of congenital cataract, deafness and cardiovascular abnormalities like ventricular septal defect or patent ductus arteriosus. Limited data exist on the seroprevalence of rubella antibodies in pregnant women in Nigeria. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevale
