Morphologic and immunologic characterization of a canine isthmus mural folliculitis resembling pseudopelade of humans.

The clinical, histopathologic and immunopathologic features of a novel form of isthmus mural folliculitis in dogs, which resembles pseudopelade in humans, were characterized. Clinically, dogs exhibited variably distributed foci of alopecia that persisted without treatment or did not respond to immunosuppressive therapy. Histopathologically, mixed mononuclear cell infiltrates, largely lymphocytes, infiltrated the follicular isthmus. Occasionally, inflammation extended above and below the follicular isthmus but did not involve the hair bulb or the epidermis. Severe follicular atrophy and variabl

Elastic tissue in scars and alopecia.

A recent report suggests that elastic fibers appear in scars in a time-dependent fashion. This observation prompted our investigation, because we have found elastic tissue stains helpful in determining the pattern of scarring in cases of permanent alopecia. We carried out this investigation to determine if the Verhoeff-Van Gieson (VVG) elastic stain can reliably differentiate scarred from non-scarred dermis and to test our hypothesis that elastic stained sections are helpful in distinguishing lichen planopilaris (LPP) from lupus erythematosus (LE), central progressive alopecia in black females

Pseudopelade of Brocq in beard area.

Pseudopelade is a rare self-limited hair disorder, resulting in cicatricial alopecia. It presents with skin-colored alopecic patches primarily involving the parietal and vertex portions of the scalp. This is a case report of a patient with pseudopelade that involves both his scalp and beard area.

A clinicopathologic study of scarring alopecia due to lichen planus: comparison with scarring alopecia in discoid lupus erythematosus and pseudopelade.

The clinicohistologic findings in 68 patients with lichen planus scarring alopecia (LP) were compared with those of 25 patients with discoid lupus erythematosus of the scalp (DLE) and 25 with pseudopelade (PP). The combination of diffuse scaling, erythema, telangiectases, and mottled hyperpigmentation within areas of scarring alopecia was a distinctive feature of DLE, whereas the clinical picture of PP was indistinguishable from that seen in 29 patients with LP. In most patients with LP, the histologic changes involved only the follicles and the perifollicular dermis. Less frequently, the infl

[Lichen planopilaris simulating postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia (Kossard)].

A 68-year old woman presented with a frontal fibrosing alopecia and lesions of the buccal mucous membranes typical for lichen planus. Postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia (PFFA) has recently been described by Kossard as a distinct entity characterized by progressive recession of the frontotemporal and parietal hair margins leading to permanent alopecia in the form of a symmetrical band-like area of scanning in postmenopausal women. The histology (perifollicular lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis, increase of apoptosis of hair follicle keratinocytes) is indistinguishable from that of li

[Scar forming alopecia. Comments on classification, differential diagnosis and pathobiology].

Numerous different diseases lead to scarring alopecia with irreversible follicular destruction as a common ending. Current classifications are based on clinical, histopathological or prognostic parameters, as well as on pathogenetic criteria which allow only a rough assessment because the precise mechanisms leading to scarring alopecia are still unknown. Inadequacies of the established classifications are obvious when regarding special forms of scarring alopecia like lichen planopilaris or pseudopelade Brocq. In order to develop more satisfying classifications, recent insights into biology and

Acquired scalp alopecia. Part I: A review.

In this two-part series we review the acquired scalp alopecias. A broad spectrum of diseases result in alopecia. In this first part we provide a framework for the assessment and diagnosis of scalp hair loss, and begin covering the individual conditions. The non-scarring alopecias covered include effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, trichotillomania, and loose anagen syndrome. The scarring alopecias cause permanent pilosebaceous follicle loss; the lymphocyte-associated scarring alopecia described encompasses lichen planopilaris, discoid lupus erythematosus, pseudopelade, and folli

[Pseudopelade Brocq--possible sequela of stage III borrelia infection?].

The differential diagnosis of cicatricial alopecia includes a wide variety of diseases. A 60-years-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of an unsuccessfully treated, progressive pseudopelede of Brocq. Further examination revealed an borreliosis (Stage III). After 3 weeks of treatment with intravenous Cefotaxime (Claforan), follow-up examination one year later show an complete arrest of the alopecia. This first description of cicatricial alopecia to be causally related to borreliosis Stage III extends the differential diagnosis of pseudopelede of Brocq and offers a curative therapy.

Pseudopelade: an inherited alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Pseudopelade is a rare idiopathic progressive alopecia that has no initial inflammatory phase. Even so, pseudopelade has been classified as scarring alopecia with postinflammatory alopecias. Atrophy rather than true scarring is the cardinal feature of pseudopelade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of reported cases of pseudopelade, especially those with a family history, was undertaken. The discovery of a young man and his mother, who had pseudopelade, plus two other familial cases prompted this study. RESULTS: Examination of the clinical and pathologic material shows pseudopelade

Cicatricial alopecia.

Scarring alopecias are of diverse etiology and pathogenesis. They may be histologically classified as primary or secondary, depending on involvement of reticular dermis. The most important primary scarring alopecias include pseudopelade, lichen planopilaris, and diffuse scarring of the vertex in African-Americans. The most important secondary scarring alopecias include folliculitis decalvans and late-stage lupus erythematosus.

Pseudopelade of Brocq occurring in two brothers in childhood.

The cases of two brothers who both developed pseudopelade at the age of 7 years, with progressive patchy hair loss, are reported. Biopsy in the elder brother showed typical changes with reduced numbers of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, a sparse lymphocytic infiltrate and an absence of widespread scarring. A third family member may have been affected. The absence of a family history in most cases suggests our patients may have a different aetiology. This report of two, possibly three, family members with pseudopelade suggests genetic factors may play a role in this family. Pseudopelade is

Postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia. Scarring alopecia in a pattern distribution.

BACKGROUND: Recession of the frontal hairline is a common event in postmenopausal women. This has been shown not to be a marker of gross androgenization, and is usually a progressive nonscarring alopecia. Six postmenopausal women, who developed a progressive frontal scarring alopecia, were studied and their clinical and laboratory data, as well as the results of scalp biopsy specimens in all six patients, were analyzed and compared with recognized forms of scarring alopecia and recently described findings in androgenetic alopecia. OBSERVATIONS: The six postmenopausal women developed a progres

[Hair casts in lichen ruber].

We present a 59-year old male patient, who had small plant cylinders 1-2 mm in length adhering to the hair shafts and easily moved up and down along them. We found hair casts together with lichen ruber follicularis and pseudopelade of the Brocq type. The presence of hair casts is often misdiagnosed as pediculosis capitis, piedra alba or trichorrhexis nodosa. The case report and the literature are discussed.

Pseudopelade of Brocq is lichen planopilaris: report of four cases that support this nosology.

Four patients are presented with pseudopelade of Brocq whose symptoms also illustrate the spectrum of symptoms of lichen planus. The literature is reviewed and the clinical and histologic features of pseudopelade of Brocq and lichen planopilaris are described. The literature on pseudopelade of Brocq is confusing and outdated. Since Degos's article in 1954, it has become commonly accepted that pseudopelade of Brocq is a nonspecific cicatricial end stage of scalp diseases resulting in alopecia. We maintain instead that pseudopelade of Brocq and lichen planopilaris are basically the same conditio

Transhiatal oesophagectomy for carcinoma oesophagus. Early experience.

BACKGROUND: Primary amenorrhoea (PA) is defined as the lack of menstruation at age 13 years in the absence of normal growth and secondary sexual characteristics, or lack of menstruation at age 15 years in the setting of normal growth and secondary sexual characteristics. Most underlying causes of PA can be classified into gonadal, anatomic, endocrine and systemic causes. Disorders of sexual development (DSD) are a rare, yet challenging aetiology. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a 24-year-old, previously healthy female, who complained of PA and absent breast development. The patient denied any ot
