Macular Alopecia: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study to Describe an Underrecognized Pattern of Alopecia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prototypical non-scarring alopecia is alopecia areata (AA), which can present in multiple forms on the scalp, including patchy, ophiasis, sisaipho, diffuse, and totalis. Not included within current alopecia classification systems is a variant characterized by macules < 1 cm in diameter. Our objective was to identify and describe this variant of alopecia not previously recognized. METHODS: We conducted an institutional review board-approved, single-center retrospective chart review of patients presenting with hair loss to a pediatric dermatology clinic. Potential sub

Correlation of Visual System Biomarkers With Motor Deficits in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis-Optic Neuritis.

IMPORTANCE: Two recent meta-analyses reported a high prevalence of both anxiety and depression in patients with alopecia areata (AA), as well as a positive association of AA with anxiety and depression, without distinguishing between disorders and symptoms. Yet, depression and anxiety can manifest either as symptoms identified in questionnaires or as specific diagnoses defined by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) or International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision criteria. OBJECTIVE: To perform a large meta-a

Alopecia areata following COVID-19 vaccine: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: To date, multiple cases of adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines have been reported worldwide. Alopecia areata (AA) is an uncommon type of adverse reaction reported in some articles and has a significant social and psychological impact on patients. Our study aimed to review the AA and COVID-19 vaccine literature. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted by searching for articles on AA following COVID-19 vaccines in international databases such as Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and Ovid from December 2019 to December 30, 2023. We included studies that provided dat

Dermatoses in patients with inflammatory bowel disease under tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitor (anti-TNF-α) agents are essential in treating inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Their use, however, may cause dermatoses. This study aims to characterize the dermatoses in IBD patients on anti-TNF-α therapy. METHODS: A total of 175 IBD patients, 105 (60%) on anti-TNF-α therapy were consecutively selected in a Brazilian referral center of gastroenterology and were evaluated by a dermatologist, regardless of whether they had dermatological complaints. RESULTS: The most prevalent disorders in patients receiving anti-TNF-α were skin infections

The Dermatologic Care Needs of a Rural Community in South Florida.

For patients in rural areas, primary care is often their only access to healthcare services, and skin concerns are among the most common diseases seen in these settings. This study aims to investigate the most common skin conditions, management trends and patterns of referral to dermatology in a rural and underserved community in South Florida. A retrospective chart review was conducted using medical records from the C.L. Brumback Primary Care Clinic in Belle Glade, FL. The most common skin conditions were fungal infections, unspecified dermatitis, pruritus, skin cancer concern, alopecia, and

Case report: Two individuals with AEBP1-related classical-like EDS: Further clinical characterisation and description of novel AEBP1 variants.

Introduction: AEBP1-related classical-like EDS (clEDS type 2) is a rare type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) that was first reported in 2016. There are overlapping clinical features with TNXB-related classical-like EDS (or clEDS type 1), including skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, and easy bruising. There are currently nine reported individuals with AEBP1-related clEDS type 2. This report confirms previous findings and provides additional clinical and molecular data on this group of individuals. Materials and methods: Two individuals (P1 and P2), with features of a rare type of EDS

The Prevalence and Clinical Relevance of the DFS Immunofluorescence Staining Pattern in a Large ANA-Positive Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Although the dense fine speckled (DFS) immunofluorescence staining pattern has been studied by various researchers in recent years, its clinical associations remain unspecified. Thus, we performed a retrospective study in a non-selective population to explore the prevalence of this enigmatic antinuclear antibody (ANA) pattern and to determine its possible clinical associations with any identifiable pathology. METHODS: We retrieved the results of ANA testing ordered by various departments in 2019 to study the prevalence of DFS pattern. Demographic characteristics and clinical featu

Art of prevention: The importance of dermatologic care when using aromatase inhibitors.

As of January 2021, there are more than 3.8 million women in the United States with a history of breast cancer. The current standard of care for breast cancer involves surgical resection, radiation therapy, adjuvant endocrine therapy, and/or adjuvant chemotherapy. Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are the gold standard for endocrine therapy in postmenopausal women. Dermatologic adverse events (dAEs) associated with AIs are rare but have been reported in the literature. Commonly reported dAEs include unspecified rash, pruritus, alopecia, vulvovaginal atrophy, vasculitis, and autoimmune/connective tiss

Association of Alopecia Areata and the Risk of Dementia: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is associated with multiple comorbidities and shares a similar inflammatory signature with dementia. The great negative psychosocial impact of AA may result in poor social engagement, a typical risk factor for dementia. However, little is known about the association between AA and dementia. Methods: Via the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 2,534 patients with AA (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification code: 704.01) aged ≥ 45 years and 25,340 controls matched for age, sex, residence, income, dementia-rela

Validation of Case Identification for Alopecia Areata Using International Classification of Diseases Coding.

BACKGROUND: Search algorithms used to identify patients with alopecia areata (AA) need to be validated prior to use in large databases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to assess whether patients with an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) 9 or 10 code for AA have a true diagnosis of AA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter retrospective review was performed at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital to determine whether patients with an ICD 9 codes (704.01 - AA) or ICD 1

Common dermatologic disorders in skin of color: a comparative practice survey.

There is a paucity of data on the epidemiology of dermatologic disease in populations with skin of color. Our objective was to compare the most common diagnoses for which patients of various racial and ethnic groups were treated at a hospital-based dermatology faculty practice. We reviewed the diagnosis codes of 1412 patient visits from August 2004 through July 2005 at the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York. New York, in whom race and ethnicity were recorded. The most common diagnoses observed during dermatologic visits by black and white patients were co
