Acquired féline hair shaft abnormality resembling trichorrhexis nodosa in humans.

Abstract  A 2-year-old castrated male domestic short-haired cat presented with self-induced alopecia associated with whitish nodes on the remaining hair shafts. Light and scanning microscopy demonstrated swellings of the hair shafts, accompanied by cuticular damage leading to hair fractures with a typical brush-like appearance. A díagnosis of trichorrhexis nodosa associated with flea allergy dermatitis was made. Complete resolution of the condition with flea control suggests an acquired disorder secondary to excessive grooming. Resumen  Un gato doméstico de pelo corto, castrado, de dos años de

A case of trichorrhexis nodosa developed in winter.

A young Japanese man developed localized trichorrhexis nodosa (LTN) of the scalp hair in the winter season. To investigate the roles of shampoo, severe sunlight exposure and/or mechanical injuries, we performed the following studies. Hair was collected from the patient and from a control. The study was performed in two steps. In the first step, hair was put into shampoo, rinsed with saline water, and then exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation once a day for one week. In the second step, the hair was similarly treated, but each shaft was bent gently with forceps before UVB exposure. Scanning

Keratoderma, hypotrichosis and leukonychia totalis: a new syndrome?

We report three members of a family with congenital hypotrichosis, characterized by trichorrhexis nodosa and trichoptilosis, dry skin, keratosis pilaris and leukonychia totalis. They also developed a progressive transgrediens type of palmoplantar keratoderma, and hyperkeratotic lesions on the knees, elbows and perianal region. As far as we are aware, this combination of clinical features has not been described previously.

Approach to dermatologic disorders in black children.

Skin diseases in black children differ because of pigment lability, fibroblastic activity, and folliular predominance. Normal findings may include Futcher's or Voight's line, linea alba, Mongolian spot, and pigmentation of the mucous membranes and nails. Disorders that are more frequent in black children are transient neonatal pustular melanosis, infantile acropustulosis, tinea capitis, pomade acne, traction alopecia, and proximal trichorrhexis nodosa. Disorders that vary in appearance but not incidence include pityriasis alba, vitiligo, and alopecia areata. A knowledge of this helps in the tr

Giant axonal degeneration: scanning electron microscopic and biochemical study of scalp hair.

Tightly curled 'frizzy' hair is a pathognomonic sign of giant axonal degeneration (GAD). The present study compares the morphological structure of the scalp hair of a GAD patient with that of her parents and first-degree relatives with the aid of scanning electron microscopy. The comparison included plaited hair of two age-matched controls, in order to exclude mechanical plaiting artifacts. Trichorrhexis nodosa and fringing of the cut ends were exclusively found in the patient's hair. Longitudinal grooving was also frequently seen in hair of normal persons. Assay of carbon (C), sulfur (S) and

Adrenoleucodystrophy: dermatological findings and skin surface lipid study.

X-linked adrenoleucodystrophy (ALD) is a rare disorder of the very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) metabolism. Cutaneous findings observed in a 29-year-old man included patchy non-cicatricial alopecia of the scalp, intense oily seborrhoea of the head, mild dry-scaling ichthyosis-like appearance of the trunk and legs and pseudo-acanthosis nigricans of the folds. Scanning electron-microscopic examination of the scalp hair showed trichorrhexis-nodosa-like fractures and several structural anomalies of the hair shaft. The skin surface lipid profile showed a marked increase in lignoceric acid (C24:0)

Localized trichorrhexis nodosa.

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a disorder of the hair shaft in which there is a distinctive response to injury. The hair is fragile and on examination regularly spaced pale 'node-like' swellings may be observed. It may affect normal hair following excessive or repeated trauma, or may occur after minimal trauma if there is an inherent defect in keratin synthesis causing abnormally brittle hair. The diagnosis can be readily made clinically and confirmed microscopically. Treatment is aimed at reducing trauma. We describe a case of localized trichorrhexis nodosa in a patient with otherwise apparently nor

[Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome. Follicular atrophoderma, multiple basal cell carcinomas and hypotrichosis].

The Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome (BDC syndrome) was first described in 1964. Only 14 affected families and 47 patients with this very rare dominant genodermatosis have been reported so far. The three main features of BDC syndrome are (1) follicular atrophoderma, especially on the dorsum of hands and feet, (2) multiple basal cell carcinomas of the face, occurring mainly during the second decade of life, reflecting the clinical relevance of BDC syndrome and (3) congenital generalized hypotrichosis, sometimes with pili torti and trichorrhexis nodosa. The expressivity of the main features varies.

[Hair casts in lichen ruber].

We present a 59-year old male patient, who had small plant cylinders 1-2 mm in length adhering to the hair shafts and easily moved up and down along them. We found hair casts together with lichen ruber follicularis and pseudopelade of the Brocq type. The presence of hair casts is often misdiagnosed as pediculosis capitis, piedra alba or trichorrhexis nodosa. The case report and the literature are discussed.

SEM studies on unmanageable hair.

The manageability of the hair is dependent on the surface composition of the hair shaft. Exogenously caused damage leads to unmanageability by massive superficial defects in the hair cuticle. The symptoms of trichorrhexis nodosa and trichoptilosis are present, and superficial horny scales are bent up and curve under in tunnel-like fashions. Appropriate hair care can improve these defects. Endogenous damage to the hair leading to unmanageability is characterized by spiral furrows along the shaft. It can not usually be improved by the use of care products. The examples presented in the paper dem

Clinical response of alopecia, trichorrhexis nodosa, and dry, scaly skin to zinc supplementation.

Two unrelated patients had dry brittle hair, alopecia, trichorrhexis nodosa, dry scaly skin, pigment dyschromia, short stature, and neurosecretory growth hormone deficiency. By means of the zinc tolerance test, patient 1 was shown to have zinc deficiency, whereas no clear zinc deficiency could be demonstrated in patient 2. In both patients, hair and the skin abnormalities responded to oral zinc therapy.

Amino-acid composition in trichorrhexis nodosa.

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a common shaft defect affecting scalp hair. Two-hundred scalp hairs exhibiting trichorrhexis nodosa were obtained from two normal females; samples were prepared from proximal shaft, pre-nodule, nodule and post-nodule sections and analysed for their respective amino-acid compositions. Significant reductions in cystine (P less than 0.001) of the pre-nodule, nodule and post-nodule sections, which decreased by 17.2%, 19.8% and 14.3%, respectively, and an increase in the acidic amino acids (P less than 0.03) were found, compared to values obtained from proximal shaft of the

[Menkes' kinky hair disease: report of 2 cases].

Menkes' kinky hair disease (trichopoliodystrophy) is a rare inherited X-linked recessive disease with an incidence of about 1:35,000, and is rare reported previously in Taiwan. We present 2 cases with typical features including sparse, coarse and stubby, kinky hair, depigmented skin, pudgy face, arrow-shaped upper lip, hypotonia, Babinski signs bilaterally, profound psychomotor retardation with disability of head control or rolling over, and poorly controlled myoclonic jerks. Both were male infants with a family history of male relatives died in early childhood. Their hairs showed pili torti a

[Bazex, Dupré and Christol syndrome. Apropos of a case with prolymphocytic leukemia].

We report a case of Bazex-Dupré-Christol (BDC) syndrome in a girl who died of prolymphocytic leukaemia at the age of 10 years. This is the first published case where the syndrome is associated with a blood disease. A review of the literature has enabled us to collect the various symptoms of BDC syndrome and to discuss the relationship of the syndrome with basal cell nevomatosis. We do not think that the blood disease was incidental. The child was 5 years' old in June 1972 when she was first seen in our out-patient clinic for severe hypotrichosis which had been present at birth and involved the

Scanning Electron Microscopy of Terminal Parts of Hair in Indian Girls.

Scanning electron microscopy of the terminal part of hair taken from Indian girls who complained of terminal splitting of their hair, shortening of the hair lengths and loss of small fragments of hair, revealed longitudinal splitting of the terminal part of the hair into two fragments characteristic of trichoptilosis. In addition these hair had a localized spot a few millimeters proximal to the distal end of the hair which revealed splintering of the hair shaft into multiple fragments which joined again at a lower level. These changes are characteristic of trichorrhexis nodosa and this is cons

Trichorrhexis Nodosa of Moustache.

A 29 year old patient, developed trichorrhexis nodosa of only the moustache at both its ends. There was no personal or family history of any hair, dermatological or central nervous system disorder. Also, there was no history of any previous topical or systemic therapy. In the absence of any other identifiable cause; his habit of repeated twirling of his moustache possibly resulted in trichorrhexis nodosa.
