[Pili annulati. A scanning electron microscopy study].

A case of ringed hair studied by light and electron microscopy is reported. The patient, a 20-year old girl, had been presenting with the hair abnormality since birth. At naked eye examination the hairs were dry, 6 to 7 cm long, and they showed dull and shining areas giving the scalp hair a scintillating appearance (fig. 1). Several samples of hair were taken and examined by light microscopy under white and polarized light. Hair shafts and cryo-fractured surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. 1. Light microscopy. Lesions were found in every hair examined. There were a

Trichororrhexis Nodosa of the Scalp Attributable to Calcium Hydroxide.

A 30 years old maly complaining of loss of 1-2 cm long fragments of hair from his scalp, was discovered to have trichorrhexis nodosa involving approximately 40% of his scalp hairs. The defect was located 1-4 mm proximal to the distal ends of the hairs and was attributable to the topical application of calcium hydronide in an ayurvedic preparation.

Disorders of the hair and scalp in blacks.

The hair follicle and shaft in blacks have unique configurations. The occurrence of certain disorders such as hot-comb and traction alopecia, proximal trichorrhexis nodosa, trichonodoses, and pseudofolliculitis predominantly among blacks is related to the morphology as well as methods of caring for black hair. In addition, there are several disorders of unknown etiology such as dissecting cellulitis that also occur primarily in blacks. Familiarity with all of the structural differences that distinguish black hair and the disorders that affect the black patient's hair and scalp will enable derm

[Wooly hair syndrome. Clinical and microscopic study].

Three cases of wolly hair syndrome in the same family are reported (fig. 1; case IV-1, IV-2 and III-1). The abnormality is transmitted as a dominant autosomal trait. The main clinical features in our three patients were the fine, soft and frizzy woolly hair (fig.2) and generalized hypothrichosis. In the boy (case IV-2), atrophic follicular keratosis restricted to the cheeks developed during puberty. Serum and urinary copper and zinc levels, urinary aminoacid levels and the results of other laboratory and clinical examinations were normal. Hairs were examined by light microscopy under white lig

Menkes disease--an autopsy case with metal analysis of hair.

We report the first case of Menkes' disease in Korea, occurring in a 1 1/2 year old boy with characteristic clinical, arteriographic and pathologic features. Postmortem examination revealed widespread neuronal destruction and abnormally tortuous and elongated large arteries including cerebral, visceral and limb vessels. Microscopically, many of the hairs formed were twisted (pili torti), of varying caliber (monilethrix), and fractured (trichorrhexis nodosa). In the radioactivated analysis of scalp hair, copper elements was not found. The abnormal vessels were characterized by fragmentation and

A patient with onychotrichodysplasia, neutropenia and normal intelligence.

A 9-year-old boy with onychotrichodysplasia and chronic neutropenia is presented. In contrast to cases described earlier, our patient has normal intelligence. The typical features of trichorrhexis nodosa are shown by electronmicroscopic photography. The chronic neutropenia is discussed and supposed to be part of the so-called lazy leucocyte syndrome.

[Development of cancer (vulvar cancer) in the Netherton syndrome (ichthyosis, hair anomalies, atopic diathesis)].

So far there has been only one incidence of a malignant tumour associated with Netherton's syndrome, a rare skin disease consisting of congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, atopic dermatitis and trichorrhexis nodosa (bamboo hair). The aetiology and clinical consequences are discussed on the occasion of a carcinoma of the vulva occurring in a case of a patient with Netherton's syndrome, both phenomena being interlinked.

Weathering of hair in trichothiodystrophy.

The structure of hairs from three patients with sulphur-deficient hair, trichothiodystrophy, has been studied by light, plane-polarizing and scanning electron microscopy. Severe cuticular and secondary cortical degeneration was evident along almost the entire length of the hair shaft, with cuticle loss, trichorrhexis nodosa formation and trichoschisis. The severity of these changes varied between patients. The role of the cuticle in protecting hair from environmental damage is discussed.

Polarization microscopy of hair in acrodermatitis enteropathica.

We studied the hair of a 10-month-old girl who was suffering from acrodermatitis enteropathica, using light and polarizing microscopy before and after institution of zinc therapy. The hair was very thin and brittle. On light microscopy the shafts showed uneven diameter and some displayed atypical trichorrhexis nodosa with stretched fractures. Ten percent of the hair fibers exhibited nodal swellings of the pseudomonilethrix type. Polarization microscopy disclosed in 70% of all hair shafts an irregular pattern of alternating dark and bright bands. This anomaly was still present in 10% of the hai

[Trichorrhexis nodosa in electron microscopy].

Trichorrhexis nodosa, i. e. a hair fracturing into brush-like widened stumps, was analyzed in an imbecile 4 year-old boy without any sign of aminoaciduria or disturbance of copper metabolism. Scanning electron microscopy showed smoothed hair cuticula with irregular ridges and surface splitting. According to the transmission electron microscopy disintegration of superficial and profound cuticular elements as well was due to progressive development of vacuoles and clefts in amorphous keratin.

[A new case of Menkes syndrome. Prenatal exclusion diagnosis in a subsequent pregnancy].

Authors report the cases of a boy with a Menkes' disease which began by a convulsive encephalopathy at the age of two months with growth failure and metaphysical abnormalities. An oldest brother died at 2 years of age in an analogous scene. The diagnosis proved to be founded by the low serum copper and coeruleo-plasmia levels and by the increased uptake of copper in the cultured skin-fibroblasts. The hair was thin and kinky; microscopical study showed pili torti and trichorrhexis nodosa. For the following pregnancy of the mother, a prenatal diagnosis by precocious amniocentesis (amniotic fluid

Pathogenesis in trichorrhexis invaginata (bamboo hair).

The mechanism of formation of trichorrhexis invaginata, which is one of the characteristic hair anomalies seen in Netherton's syndrome, was studied using plucked hairs obtained from 3 patients with the typical clinical features. The biopsy specimens used to examine the hair root were obtained from the scalp of one of the patients and the eyebrow area of the other. The scanning electron microscopic observation of plucked hairs showed trichorrhexis invaginata, tortion nodule, pili torti, and trichorrhexis nodosa. The light microscopic sections of nodules of plucked hairs revealed invaginated hai

[Woolly hair. Apropos of 5 cases].

Five cases of Woolly hair, three generalised, and two localised are reported. On the first two, we carried out trichogrammes which were studied with polarized light, and on all five, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The data obtained coincided with previous descriptions (Pseudomonilethrix images, Pili torti, Trichorrhexis nodosa, reduced hair diameter, oval section following transversal cut, and a wavy-line disposition), although we emphasize the smaller number of layers of cuticle cells following the transversal cut, and the presence of Trichonodosis, not previously refered.

Neurotrichosis: hair-shaft abnormalities associated with neurological diseases.

Six children with morphological hair-shaft abnormalities and neurological disease are presented, including two with Pollitt syndrome, one with biotin deficiency, two with Menkes diseases and one with argininosuccinic aciduria. The child with biotin deficiency grew normal hair following oral biotin therapy. Although the hair-shaft abnormalities may be seen with light microscopy (LM), they are best visualised with scanning electron-microscopy (SEM). Pili torti may be mistaken for monilethrix by LM, but SEM shows the true defect. A review of the literature shows that these hair-shaft abnormalitie

[Netherton syndrome].

The case of a 8 years old girl, who since the delivery had suffered from a generalized, erythematous and scaling eruption of the skin is reported. She also had a sparse, short and brittle hair. Abnormalities such as trichorrhexis nodosa and pilo torti were observed. The finding of a generalized increase of the urinary aminoacids, excretion especially for Glycine and Serine, is added to this features.

[Ichthyosis vulgaris, growth retardation, hair dysplasia, tooth abnormalities, immunologic deficiencies, psychomotor retardation and resorption disorders. Case report of 2 siblings].

Two siblings (4 and 10 years old) with ichthyosis vulgaris, growth and mental retardation, hair dysplasia, teeth abnormalities, recurrent infections and malabsorption are presented. The elder sister of the children as well as the rest of the family are unremarkable. The complex of symptoms does not fit into one of the known Ichthyosis syndromes. Microscopically the dystrophic hairs show changes in diameters, nodules, lack of the medulla, rough cuticle and splits vertical to the axis, sometimes resembling trichorrhexis nodosa. In the scanning electron-microscope there is a clear difference to N

Acquired structural defects of the hair.

Acquired hair shaft abnormalities resembling genetic trichorrhexis nodosa were seen in two patients. Selenium shampoo and bacterial infection with trichomycosis axillaris may have been the contributing factors. There is a possibility that strongyloides larvae caused trichonodosis in one patient.

Menkes' syndrome (trichopoliodystrophy): use of scanning electron-microscope in diagnosis and carrier identification.

Three new cases of Menkes' kinky-hair syndrome are presented. In each case the diagnosis was confirmed biochemically, but light microscopy failed to demonstrate the characteristic hair changes. However, when scanning electron-microscopy was used, pili torti and trichorrhexis nodosa were seen clearly in the samples taken from each case. In addition, monilethrix, a change noted in other reports, was seen to be an optical effect produced at the point of a twist. Hair samples were obtained from female relatives of the three affected families and were similarly examined. Changes indicative of carri
