Hair cortisol as an indicator of chronic stress in Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra): Evaluating influencing variations.

Glucocorticoids such as cortisol are secreted via the HPA axis to maintain homeostasis and respond to stress, but chronic over-activation can impair health and survival. Cortisol accumulation in the hair is particularly useful because it reflects long-term stress, making it a valuable physiological indicator for species conservation and management. However, as variables such as housing conditions, age class, sex, hair color, and disease can affect hair cortisol concentration (HCC), ignoring these variables may lead to inaccuracies in chronic stress evaluation. This study measured HCCs in 33 Eu

Perceptions of female age, health and attractiveness vary with systematic hair manipulations.

OBJECTIVE: Research on female facial attractiveness has focused on the effects of face shape and skin condition. Few studies have investigated the impact of hair on assessments of female attractiveness. Research using images of computer-generated (rendered) hair has demonstrated that subtle variations in hair thickness, density and style affect perceptions of female age, health and attractiveness. METHOD: The current study consisted of two experiments in which non-expert female panellists viewed distinct expressions of specific hair features and judged them for age, health and attractiveness.

Loss-of-function mutations in ASIP and MC1R are associated with coat colour variation in marsupials.

Pigmentation in mammalian hair follicles is governed in part by interactions between agouti signalling protein (ASIP) and the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R). The most common coat colours in mammals result from alternating bands of dark eumelanin and light phaeomelanin within individual hair shafts. However, coats dominated by a single melanin have arisen several times. Here, we examine the genetic basis of two instances in marsupials: a melanistic morph of the eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus) found at high frequency in the wild, and a rare case of fixed xanthism in the marsupial moles. In e

An Exploration of the Genetic Architecture of Pregnancy-Related Linea Nigra and Its Relationship With Pigmentation Phenotypes.

Human eye, skin and hair color pigmentation are highly heritable traits influenced by hundreds of genetic loci. The heritability and genetic etiology of the hyperpigmentation trait pregnancy-related linea nigra (PLN), where a dark but usually temporary vertical line develops on the abdomen, is unknown, and our understanding of its relationships with other pigmentation traits is limited. We conducted a genetic study of self-reported PLN in women of European ancestry, using a genome-based restricted maximum likelihood (GREML) method to estimate PLN heritability, performing a genomewide associati

SVMB-Net: Local Global Fusion and Multi-Branch Cross-Feature Attention for Skin Lesion Segmentation.

Accurate segmentation of skin lesions remains a key challenge for early cancer diagnosis due to complex morphological variations such as irregular shape, heterogeneous texture and low contrast. To address these limitations, we propose SVMB-Net, a dual-architecture framework that integrates SwinTransformer and CNN with the following innovations: first, the Super ViT-CNN (SViT-C) hybrid encoder employs a special global restoration module for extracting high-level semantics, whereas the dual-branch fusion module combines CNN's local feature extraction with SwinTransformer's global context modelli

The heart of the hair fiber: How the inner structure of the coat reflects adaptive variation across color, sex, age, and body region in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius).

Understanding how hair fiber structure mediates thermal adaptation in desert animals still remains an unresolved question. In dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius), the coexistence of dark and white coat colors in hot deserts presents an adaptive paradox.. This study examined how the internal architecture of camel hair fibers-specifically the degree and type of medullation-varies with coat color, sex, age, and body region to assess their potential thermoregulatory significance. Hair samples from 138 Canarian dromedaries were analyzed using an automated medullation detection system and evaluat

A case of Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome presented with widespread apocrine hidrocystomas showing variable clinical features.

Dear Editor, Genodermatoses are usually diagnosed in early childhood but diagnosis may be delayed in rare cases. Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome (SSPS) first described in 1971 is a rare type of autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma, periocular and eyelid apocrine hidrocystomas, hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and nail dystrophy (1). Fewer than 40 cases have been reported up to 2018 (2) and the number has slightly increased with subsequent case reports. We report here a 73-year-old male patient whose parents were third-degree cousins presented to dermatol

Taxonomic and life cycle reappraisals of the marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa complex, with descriptions of three new Nia species.

The marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa has been regarded as a species complex, possibly including several species, because morphological variations in fruitbody, spore, and spore appendage have been observed in materials from worldwide collections. Using more than 50 monosporic isolates of N. vibrissa-like fungi mainly obtained from Japanese beach coasts, we investigated their molecular phylogeny, morphological characteristics, mating compatibility, nuclear behavior during spore formation, and life cycles. Molecular phylogenetic analyses separated the examined strains into seven clades. Each cl

Canine coat color E locus updates: Identification of a new MC1R variant causing 'sable' coat color in English Cocker Spaniels and a proposed update to the E locus dominance hierarchy.

The coat color phenotype 'sable' occurs in the English Cocker Spaniel dog breed. It closely resembles other canine color patterns known as domino/grizzle/pied (eA allele) and grizzle/domino (eG allele) determined by variants in the melanocortin 1 receptor gene (MC1R; 'extension' or E locus), a key multi-allele regulator of coat color. We examined genetic variation in MC1R, and found one new non-synonymous variant, c.250G>A (p.(Asp84Asn)), consistently associated with the English Cocker Spaniel 'sable' phenotype. We propose calling this newly identified allele eH and further show that the eA ,

Genotype data for 60 SNP genetic markers associated with eye, hair, skin color, ABO blood group, sex, core Y-chromosome haplogroups in Kazakh population.

OBJECTIVES: The collection of genotype data was conducted as an essential part of a pivotal research project with the goal of examining the genetic variability of skin, hair, and iris color among the Kazakh population. The data has practical application in the field of forensic DNA phenotyping (FDA). Due to the limited size of forensic databases from Central Asia (Kazakhstan), it is practically impossible to obtain an individual identification result based on forensic profiling of short tandem repeats (STRs). However, the pervasive use of the FDA necessitates validation of the currently employ

Multi-ancestry tandem repeat association study of hair colour using exome-wide sequencing.

Hair colour variation is influenced by hundreds of positions across the human genome but this genetic contribution has only been narrowly explored. Genome-wide association studies identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) influencing hair colour but the biology underlying these associations is challenging to interpret. We report 16 tandem repeats (TRs) with effects on different models of hair colour plus two TRs associated with hair colour in diverse ancestry groups. Several of these TRs expand or contract amino acid coding regions of their localized protein such that structure, and by

The Trotter collection: A review of Mildred Trotter's hair research and an update for studies of human variation.

OBJECTIVES: Mildred Trotter was an anatomist and physical anthropologist whose studies on hair morphology, growth, somatic distribution, and trait relationships to age and ethnogeographic population were foundational to the field of microscopical hair analysis. The collection of human hair samples she assembled for her research has been an underutilized resource for studies on human hair variation. We applied updated methods and reviewed Trotter's original data to reassess the relationship hair traits have to diverse population labels. METHODS: Hair form and pigmentation patterns were measure

Tradescantia response to air and soil pollution, stamen hair cells dataset and ANN color classification.

Tradescantia plant is a complex system that is sensible to environmental factors such as water supply, pH, temperature, light, radiation, impurities, and nutrient availability. It can be used as a biomonitor for environmental changes; however, the bioassays are time-consuming and have a strong human interference factor that might change the result depending on who is performing the analysis. We have developed computer vision models to study color variations from Tradescantia clone 4430 plant stamen hair cells, which can be stressed due to air pollution and soil contamination. The study introdu

The influence of cosmetic treatments in the uptake of in vitro cocaine contamination in hair.

Hair analysis is a powerful tool to assess drug use, yet the challenge of external contamination complicates its interpretation. Understanding the influence of cosmetic hair treatments is pivotal as their presence may affect this phenomenon. This study investigated the effects of four cosmetic treatments (bleach, henna, gel, and dry shampoo) on the external in vitro contamination of cocaine and its primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine (BE). Hair samples were divided into four groups: A-hair treated with cosmetics then contaminated; B-hair contaminated then subjected to cosmetic treatment; and C

Outdoor noncontact respiratory measurements of unrestricted rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) using millimeter-wave radar.

Respiration is an invaluable signal that facilitates the real-time observation of physiological dynamics. In recent years, the advancement of noncontact measurement technology has gained momentum in capturing physiological activities in natural settings. This technology is anticipated to be found not only in humans but also in nonhuman primates. Currently, the predominant noncontact approach for nonhuman animals involves measuring vital signs through subtle variations in skin color. However, this approach is limited when addressing areas of the body covered with hair or when working in outdoor

Association Between Natural Hair Color, Race, and Alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: Limited epidemiologic data has suggested direct associations between hair pigment, race, and incidence of alopecia areata (AA). Here, we examine the relationship between natural hair color, race, and the lifetime risk alopecia. METHODS: In this case-control study, we included UK Biobank patients of all races and self-reported hair color with diagnoses of AA, androgenetic alopecia (AGA), or scarring alopecia (SA). Multivariable logistic regression was used to detect differences in lifetime risk. RESULTS: Findings reveal a significantly increased risk of AA among individuals with

Genomic inbreeding analysis reveals resilience and genetic diversity in Indian yak populations.

The yak (Bos grunniens), renowned for its adaptability to extreme cold and hypoxic conditions, stands as a remarkable domestic animal crucial for sustaining livelihoods in harsh climates. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the whole genome sequence data from three distinct Indian yak populations: Arunachali yak (n = 10), Himachali yak (n = 10), and Ladakhi yak (n = 10). The genomic data for Indian yaks were meticulously generated by our laboratory and compared with their Chinese counterpart, the Jinchuan yak (n = 8), for a more nuanced understanding. Our investigation revealed a total of

An intronic copy number variation in Syntaxin 17 determines speed of greying and melanoma incidence in Grey horses.

The Greying with age phenotype in horses involves loss of hair pigmentation whereas skin pigmentation is not reduced, and a predisposition to melanoma. The causal mutation was initially reported as a duplication of a 4.6 kb intronic sequence in Syntaxin 17. The speed of greying varies considerably among Grey horses. Here we demonstrate the presence of two different Grey alleles, G2 carrying two tandem copies of the duplicated sequence and G3 carrying three. The latter is by far the most common allele, probably due to strong selection for the striking white phenotype. Our results reveal a remar

Structural characterization of tyrosinases and an update on human enzymes.

Tyrosinase, a pivotal enzyme in melanin biosynthesis, orchestrates the pigmentation process in humans, affecting skin, hair, and eye color. This chapter examines the three-dimensional structure and functional aspects of tyrosinases from various sources, highlighting their di-metal ion coordination crucial for catalytic activity. I explore the biochemical pathwayscheme catalyzed by tyrosinase, specifically the oxidation of L-tyrosine to L-dopaquinone, a precursor in melanin synthesis. Detailed structural analyses, including 3D structures obtained from X-ray crystallography and computational mod
