Measles Vaccine Boosters in Immunocompromised Adults to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality From Acute Measles Infection: A Scoping Review.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness associated with significant global mortality, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. As vaccine hesitancy continues to increase following the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with a lack of measles-specific antiviral agents, the risk of outbreaks and epidemics remains elevated. Immunocompromised individuals have a higher risk of serious complications from measles, especially because the live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine may be contraindicated in severely immunocompromised patients. As such, these individuals depend on herd im

[Ultrasound diagnosis of fetal infections: current possibilities and limitations].

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features. METHOD: This retrospective s

[TORCH infections during pregnancy: clinical significance, diagnosis, and treatment].

TORCH infections (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) constitute the classic group of congenital infections that may result in severe fetal and neonatal consequences. Transplacentally transmitted infections have been a critical component of prenatal care for decades. Although screening for this group of infections has been performed in Hungary since 1971, diagnostic approaches and screening strategies have undergone significant transformation. Current international recommendations, as well as national professional guidelines, no

First trimester maternal infections and offspring congenital heart defects: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Maternal infections have been proposed to play a role in the development of congenital heart defects (CHD). This study aims to synthesize contemporary evidence on the association between first-trimester maternal infection and risk of offspring CHD. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO number: CRD42024523638) used Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library to identify studies investigating first-trimester maternal infection and offspring CHD, published up until 30 September 2024. Human studies with a minimum of 50 cases were eli

Therapy With Doxycycline and Hydroxychloroquine Enables Surgical Excision of Ulcerated Cutaneous Granulomas in a Patient With Ataxia Telangiectasia.

The rubella virus vaccine strain can cause granulomas in patients with inborn errors of immunity that may evolve into chronic, recalcitrant ulcers. This report details treatment of ulcerated rubella granulomas in a patient with ataxia telangiectasia with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine resulting in partial ulcer healing within 4 weeks, which in turn enabled surgical excision. Though this treatment did not cure or clear the rubella virus, that is known to persist in patients with inborn errors of immunity like ataxia telangiectasia, it enabled durable local lesion control of typically chroni

[Genetic, endocrine, drug-induced and pancreatogenic forms of diabetes and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (Update 2026)].

Diabetes classified as category 3, usually referred to as type 3 diabetes, encompasses specific types due to other causes. These specific forms of diabetes are clinically and pathophysiologically very heterogeneous. Type 3 diabetes encompasses inherited forms of diabetes (monogenetic diabetes, neonatal diabetes, Down syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, Turner syndrome), diabetes due to other endocrine disorders (acromegaly, Cushing's disease, glucagonoma) and drug-induced forms, e.g., caused by glucocorticoids, immune checkpoint inhibitors, calcineurin inhibitors, phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase inh

TORCH infections at the maternal-fetal placental transmission: an overview of multi-omics, pathogenesis and innate immune defense.

The maternal-fetal interface represents a dynamic immunological frontier where pregnancy outcomes are determined by the delicate balance between host defense and microbial pathogenesis. Vertical transmission of pathogens across the placental barrier can lead to devastating consequences including fetal loss, stillbirth, prematurity, and congenital anomalies. The classic TORCH acronym encompasses Toxoplasma gondii, Other agents, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex virus, though emerging viruses including Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2 have expanded this spectrum. This review synthesize

Mumps Outbreak in Shivamogga, India (2023-2024): Age-Specific Attack Rates, Complications, and an Economic Case for Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine Inclusion in the Universal Immunization Programme.

Background Recurrent mumps outbreaks continue to be reported in India, where the vaccine is not part of the national immunization schedule. Robust, age‑specific burden data from outbreak settings remain limited. Methods We conducted a retrospective investigation of pediatric mumps during epidemiologic weeks (EW)49‑2023 to EW8‑2024 across Subbaiah Institute facilities in Shivamogga, Karnataka, India. Clinically suspected cases were line-listed; laboratory confirmation used anti-mumps IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We described demographics, complications, and length of stay (LOS

Measles - retrospective study of cases reported in a national notification system, Czech Republic, 2018-2024.

BACKGROUND: In response to the recent increase in measles cases and outbreaks across Europe, Czech surveillance data were analysed. The aim was also to evaluate the effect of vaccination on measles complications. METHODS: Cases of measles reported to the national surveillance system according to the EU case definition (2018) between 2018–2024, were analysed. Demographic characteristics were assessed using descriptive analysis (counts and proportions). Logistic regression with an odds ratio (OR) supplemented with the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated to measure the association bet

Post‑vaccination Acute Pancreatitis in an Infant: A Report of a Rare Case and Brief Literature Review.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is increasingly recognized in the pediatric population, although it remains uncommon in infants and young children. In this age group, diagnosis is often delayed because clinical manifestations, such as irritability, vomiting, and feeding intolerance, are nonspecific and may occur in the absence of classic abdominal pain. Most pediatric cases are mild and self‑limiting; however, severity can range from mild to severe depending on the presence and duration of organ dysfunction and the development of local or systemic complications at presentation.  A wide spectrum of eti

Two novel kindreds with autosomal recessive STAT2 deficiency.

STAT2 is a transcription factor in the type I/III interferon (IFN) antiviral response. Autosomal recessive STAT2 deficiency, reported in 12 kindreds from nine countries, underlies severe viral infections and hyperinflammation. We report three patients from two kindreds from Portugal and Algeria, respectively, with novel homozygous STAT2 mutations. The three patients developed complications following live attenuated measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in one patient, who responded to treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG), steroids,

Recurrent Mumps in a Fully Vaccinated Young Adult With a Prior Breakthrough Infection: A Case Report.

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that typically presents with parotid gland swelling and constitutional symptoms. Although widespread immunization has substantially reduced disease incidence, outbreaks continue to occur among vaccinated populations, raising concerns regarding waning immunity and vaccine failure. Recurrent mumps following both prior natural infection and complete vaccination is uncommon and remains infrequently reported. We describe a 21-year-old woman who presented with a four-day history of fever, malaise, myalgia, and progressive painful swelling of the left paro

Immunogenicity and safety of an investigational varicella zoster vaccine in toddlers aged 12-15 months: results of a phase II, controlled, randomized trial.

Varicella is an acute, highly contagious infectious disease that primarily impacts young children with approximately 90% of cases occurring under the age of 15. Due to the high incidence of varicella infection, the potential for serious complications, and the significant economic and public health burden, vaccination of toddlers against varicella is included in routine vaccination programs in many countries. This study assessed the immunogenicity and safety of the investigational varicella vaccine (VNS) compared to a licensed, current standard-of-care vaccine. In this phase II, observer-blind,

Viral infection and dementia risk: A systematic bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Viral infections have attracted increasing interest as potentially alterable risk factors for dementia; nonetheless, the results from observational research are variable and prone to confounding bias and reverse causation. This work seeks to systematically explore the potential causal associations between several viral infections and various forms of dementia by a Mendelian randomization methodology utilizing summary statistics and extensive genomic data from the Finnish FinnGen R12 database. METHODS: This study initially included 14 viral infections, including anogenital herpes,
