Four patients with the congenital rubella syndrome had keratoconus and evidence of acute or previous corneal hydrops. All four of the patients vigorously rubbed and poked their eyes. The keratoconus and acute corneal hydrops in these patients probably resulted from chronic traumatizing mannerisms common in other patients with mental retardation and are not specific for the congenital rubella syndrome.

Six young adult women with recurrent rubella arthritis after HPV-77 DE/5 rubella immunization were studied. A case of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) with involvement of the aorta is described in a 44-year-old woman. So far only 3 cases of aortal FMD have been mentioned, all in female patients. Significant success has been achieved in the reduction, if not the elimination, of congenital deafness arising from the rhesus factor. Ocular consequences of the congenital rubella syndrome are not limited to abnormalities noted in the neonatal period. Additional abnormalities may appear years and even decades after birth. Thirteen patients are presented in whom glaucoma has been diagnosed 3 to 22 years after birth. This acquired form of glaucoma has occurred in microphthalmic eyes in all but two cases. The results of a comprehensive study of the problem of congenital rubella in Moscow and other cities of the USSR are presented. The highest rubella incidence was found among children 1-7 years of age; but 20-25 rubella cases were also recorded annually per 100 000 adults. Specific antihaemagglutinins were found in 36-70% of children and in 91-99% of adults. Prenatal causes of sensorineural hearing loss in children may be genetic or nongenetic, the deafness occurs alone or with other abnormalities. In addition, there are prenatal causes of a sensorineural hearing loss which is of delayed onset postnatally. In this review only the better known causes are discussed in which the otorhinolaryngologist should establish a diagnosis early, particularly when the possibility exists of preventing or even treating the hearing loss.

A 6-year-old boy, whose parents were first cousins, had congenital retinal nonattachment in one eye and a falciform fold in the other. He had had a shunt operation for hydrocephaly. Oxygen was never administered and test results for rubella and toxoplasmosis were negative. The consanguinity in this case indicates the syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait. This and other hereditary disorders with congenital retinal nonattachment have previously been misinterpreted as retrolental fibroplasia occurring without oxygen treatment.

The appearance and persistence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG antibodies in postnatal rubella infections were studied by employing a solid-phase radioimmunoassay test. Altogether, 222 serial serum specimens from 51 patients with acute rubella infection were tested. Both IgG and IgM antibodies developed rapidly and appeared in all patients within 4 days after the onset of rash. In some patients, the IgM antibodies clearly preceded the IgG antibodies; however, the reverse situation was also noticed in a few cases.
