Malformations involving the ear may be part of a developmental anomaly of the first and second branchial arch or of a malformation syndrome involving other regions of the skeleton. The anatomy and pathogenesis are discussed, a classification is suggested, and the general management is outlined. A surgical technic for the treatment of Group II (moderately severe) aural atresia is described. Of 21 patients, treated surgically during the past 12 years, 15 patients (71%) gained serviceable hearing. In six patients hearing was not improved.

Rubella antibody was detected in 85 (61%) of 139 children aged from 6 months to 7 years with congenital perceptive deafness. Rubella virus was isolated from the fetus or products of conception in 29 out of 32 cases (91%) terminated because of clinical maternal rubella proved or supported by laboratory findings in the first trimester of pregnancy. Virus was isolated from similar material from only 3 out of 19 (16%) other clinical cases of rubella in which the laboratory findings were inconclusive or against the diagnosis or in which no laboratory tests were done. Virus was found in the amniotic fluid if the fetus was infected and there was no evidence that the placenta was any real barrier to fetal infection.

In a city of 200,000, 119 therapeutic abortions were performed during the period 1962 to 1968. Multiple grounds were commonly given for abortion; these often included depression. The case records, cardiac catheterization and angiographic findings in 32 patients were reviewed to illustrate the high incidence of pulmonary artery stenosis in congenital rubella syndrome. These interesting lesions often are of equivocal or unknown clinical significance compared with the other malformations that beset these patients, but to know of them explains certain physical findings and to study their incidence is an unusual opportunity to pinpoint a definite cause for a congenital cardiac lesion.
