Serological Evidence of Chikungunya Virus Infection Among Suspected Measles Cases in Selected Regions of Kenya: 2008-2014.

Chikungunya virus (family Togavirdae and genus Alphavirus) is an emerging and reemerging virus of public health importance both regionally and globally. In Kenya, about 50-60% of the suspected measles cases remain undiagnosed once measles and rubella is ruled out by immunoglobulin M (IgM) ELISA thus prompted the need to do differential diagnosis on the measles/rubella negative samples. Nothing is known about the role played by chikungunya infection among these suspected measles cases. Febrile rash illness is a common clinical presentation of arboviruses, including chikungunya. In this study, w

Kansas Family Physicians Perceptions of Parental Vaccination Hesitancy.

INTRODUCTION: In the past few decades, patients expressing the idea that vaccines are unsafe or unneeded have been experienced increasingly by physicians and other healthcare providers. Discussions with patients regarding their reasons for vaccine refusals are important, as it may provide information that can be utilized in an intervention to increase vaccination rates and combat the spread of diseases that are making a resurgence in the United States. The main objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of family physicians as to why parents in Kansas may be vaccine hesitant. METH

[A Case of Simultaneous Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Diagnosis with Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever].

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a zoonotic disease that can be presented with fever, fatigue, generalized joint/body pain, diarrhea and bleeding in various parts of the body. The risk of developing a severe fatal disease in humans, the possibility of being infected with aerosols and the risk of being used as a biological weapon make the disease still an important health problem all over the world as there is no a specific treatment and vaccine that has proven effective againt the virus today. The pathogenesis of the disease is not known, but vascular endothelial damage is prominent.

Primary Measles Encephalitis.

AUDIENCE: This scenario was developed to educate emergency medicine residents on the diagnosis and management of primary measles encephalitis. INTRODUCTION: Measles is a highly infectious ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus whose prevalence in the United States has continued to increase despite being declared eliminated in 2000,1 and larger outbreaks have been noted among those who elect not to vaccinate.2 The recommended live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine schedule for pediatrics includes one routine dose at 12-15 months of age and a second dose between 4-6 years of age with a

Improved Long Ureteral Reconstruction With Ileum By Longitudinal Clipping And Mucosal Stripping: An Animal Study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the possibility of bridging long ureteral defects by longitudinal clipping and mucosal stripping of the pedicled segment of ileum (CMSPI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten beagle dogs (five males and females aged 2-3 years) were used to model a defect of the entire ureter. An ileal segment was selected, and half of the intestinal segment was longitudinally resected, without mesenteric resection. The intestinal mucosa was removed. Then, the ileum was sutured to form a tube connecting the renal pelvis to the bladder. A 5F ureter stent was inserted into the ileum and removed 4

Congenital infections in Hong Kong: an overview of TORCH.

Congenital infections refer to a group of perinatal infections that may have similar clinical presentations, including rash and ocular findings. TORCH is the acronym that covers these infections (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus). There are, however, other important causes of intrauterine/perinatal infections, including enteroviruses, varicella zoster virus, Zika virus, and parvovirus B19. Intrauterine and perinatal infections are significant causes of fetal and neonatal mortality and important contributors to childhood morbidity. A high index of

Stop, think SCORTCH: rethinking the traditional 'TORCH' screen in an era of re-emerging syphilis.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of congenital infections is ever changing, with a recent resurgence in syphilis infection rates seen in the UK. Identification of congenital infection is often delayed; early recognition and management of congenital infections is important. Testing modalities and investigations are often limited, leading to missed diagnostic opportunities. METHODS: The SCORTCH (syphilis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), 'other', rubella, toxoplasmosis, chickenpox, herpes simplex virus (HSV) and blood-borne viruses) acronym increases the awareness of clinicians to the increased risk of conge

Maternal Viral Infection and Risk of Fetal Congenital Heart Diseases: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Background At present, the association between maternal viral infection and risk of congenital heart diseases ( CHD ) in offspring is uncertain; additionally, a complete overview is missing. A meta-analysis of observational studies was performed to address the question of whether women who had a history of viral infection in early pregnancy were at an increased risk of CHD in offspring, compared with mothers without viral infection. Methods and Results Unrestricted searches were conducted, with an end date parameter of July 15, 2018, of PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, Cochrane Libraries, and C

Rubella Vaccination Coverage Among Women of Childbearing Age in Vietnam.

Despite the availability of effective and safe rubella vaccines for women of childbearing age, prevention and control of congenital rubella syndrome in children remains challenging in Vietnam. In order to examine this issue, we conducted a cross-sectional study, examining the current coverage of rubella vaccination before pregnancy among 807 pregnant women and women with children under 12 months of age in urban and rural districts, Dong Da and Ba Vi, in Hanoi, Vietnam. In this population, we observed an alarming non-compliance rate with rubella vaccination before pregnancy in both localities.

Diabetic ketoacidosis in a child with congenital rubella syndrome: A case report and review of literature.

Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) usually occurs in a developing fetus of a pregnant woman who has contracted rubella, usually in the first trimester. With universal rubella vaccination, the incidence of CRS in developed countries has drastically reduced. However, in developing countries, CRS continues to be a public health menace in children. Sensorineural deafness, cataract, micropthalamia, patent ductus arteriosus and pulmonary stenosis are common clinical manifestations in a child affected with CRS. Other relatively rare manifestations are hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopenia and blueberry

A literature review on Fuchs uveitis syndrome: An update.

Fuchs uveitis syndrome is a chronic, typically unilateral, ocular condition characterized by an asymptomatic mild inflammatory syndrome that can result in cataract and secondary glaucoma. Diagnosis is largely clinical because the etiology remains obscure. Fuchs uveitis syndrome is most likely the result of different insults or pathogenic mechanisms, including infections, autoimmune diseases, hereditary and sympathetic dysfunction. According to the infectious theory, the infection of herpes simplex virus, ocular toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, rubella virus, and other viruses have been implicat

A Measles Virus-Based Vaccine Candidate Mediates Protection against Zika Virus in an Allogeneic Mouse Pregnancy Model.

The impact of the Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic highlights the need for vaccines that reduce or prevent infection and reliably prevent teratogenic complications. The live-attenuated measles virus (MV) vaccine strains are a promising vaccine platform, since they induce robust humoral and cellular immune responses against additional antigens and have an excellent safety record. To explore its potential to protect against ZIKV, we compared a recombinant Schwarz strain MV that encodes ZIKV prM and soluble E proteins (MV-Zika-sE) with a prototypic alum-adjuvanted whole inactivated ZIKV particle vaccin
