Bilateral Deafness as a Complication of the Vaccination-A Case Report.

The vaccination has much profit for an infectious disease. On the other hand, there is little frequency, side effects may appear. It includes severe complication. We reported the case that resulted in bilateral acute profound hearing loss after mumps alone and measles and rubella (MR) vaccination. The case was a 5 years old girl. She inoculated mumps alone and MR vaccine. After 18days later, both sides profound hearing loss occurred in her. The hearing loss was not improved by the intravenous feeding of the steroid. Three months later, cochlea implantation was carried out to her right ear. She

Measles outbreak linked to insufficient vaccination coverage in Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, France, October 2017 to July 2018.

On 30 October 2017, an outbreak of measles started in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine (NA) region in France among Bordeaux University students before spreading to other regions. Until 1 July 2018, 1,101 cases were reported in NA, including 98 complications and two deaths. Cases were related to clusters (e.g. students, healthcare workers) in 16%; 81% of cases were not vaccinated against measles as recommended. Vaccination coverage above herd immunity threshold remains the main preventative outbreak measure.

Safety of live-attenuated measles-mumps-rubella and herpes zoster vaccination in multiple myeloma patients on maintenance lenalidomide or bortezomib after autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Attenuated live virus vaccinations are generally recommended 24 months following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in patients not receiving immunosuppressive therapy. To date, there are no data regarding the safety of live-attenuated herpes zoster or measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccinations in multiple myeloma patients on maintenance lenalidomide or bortezomib following autologous HCT. One hundred thirty-seven multiple myeloma patients on maintenance lenalidomide or bortezomib post-auto-HCT who received either MMR or herpes zoster vaccine were analyzed and any adverse events documented

Exhaustive TORCH Pathogen Diagnostics Corroborate Zika Virus Etiology of Congenital Malformations in Northeastern Brazil.

The Latin American 2015-2016 Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak was associated with an increase in microcephaly predominantly in northeastern Brazil. To comparatively investigate infectious causes of congenital malformations, we performed a nested case-control study in 32 mothers of cases of suspected congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) and 160 age-matched controls from Bahia, northeastern Brazil. We collected clinical and imaging data and assessed past exposure to ZIKV, Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), dengue virus, and 8 established TORCH (Toxoplasma gondii, Treponema pallidum, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus,

Updated NACI recommendations for measles post-exposure prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Human immune globulin (Ig) products are currently recommended as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for measles in certain susceptible groups. However, successful measles vaccination programs in North America have led to low circulation of measles virus and most blood donors now have vaccine-derived immunity. Concurrently, the concentrations of anti-measles antibodies in human Ig products have shown trends of gradual decline and previously recommended doses and routes of administration may no longer be optimally protective. OBJECTIVES: To review the literature and update recommendati

Isolated fetal echogenic bowel in a retrospective cohort: The role of infection screening.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal echogenic bowel (FEB) is an ultrasonographic marker of fetal infection. We aimed to determine the utility of infection screening when FEB is isolated. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study of isolated FEB cases between 2006-2014. Infection screening included toxoplasmosis, rubella, syphilis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus and parvovirus B19. Fetal karyotyping, screening for cystic fibrosis (CF) and follow-up scans were also offered, according to international standards. Incidence of infection and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: 1

SEROPREVALENCE OF RUBELLA ANTIBODIES AMONG TURKISH AND FOREIGN WOMEN IN TURKEY.

The aims of this study were to determine seroprevalence of rubella antibodies among Turkish and foreign women living in Turkey and to estimate percent women susceptible to rubella infection. This retrospective study was conducted among 970 women (816 Turks) attending gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinics. Serum samples were tested for anti-rubella IgG and IgM by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Eighty-eight percent of the subjects were positive only for anti-rubella IgG indicating immunity to rubella infection, none for only anti-rubella IgM and 1.5% for both anti-rubella IgM

Hospital-based surveillance of congenital rubella syndrome in Indonesia.

UNLABELLED: Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) has serious consequences, such as miscarriage, stillbirth, and severe birth defects in infants, resulting from rubella virus infection during pregnancy. However, rubella vaccine has not yet been implemented in Indonesia. This study aimed (1) to estimate the incidence of CRS in Indonesia, (2) describe the clinical features of CRS at our referral hospital, and (3) pilot a CRS surveillance system to be extended to other hospitals. We conducted a 4-month prospective surveillance study of infants aged <1 year with suspected CRS in 2013 at an Indonesian

Sociodemographic and economic characteristics of susceptibility to rubella among women preparing for pregnancy in rural China.

OBJECTIVES: Infection with rubella virus during pregnancy can result in congenital defects and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The risk of rubella infection is greatly determined by the level of rubella antibodies in the serum. A survey of rubella antibody seronegativity rates was conducted in 780 000 women in rural China who were planning a pregnancy, in order to evaluate the herd susceptibility in different age groups and by high, middle, and low GDP per capita regions. METHODS: In order to evaluate the herd susceptibility to rubella, a nationwide population-based study of rural Chinese women w

Pathogenesis of Non-Zika Congenital Viral Infections.

A widespread epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was reported in 2015 from South and Central America and the Caribbean. Although the full spectrum of ZIKV infection of the newborn has yet to be determined, other maternal viral infections resulting in transmission to the fetus provide instructive lessons that can be applied to the prospective evaluation of individuals with ZIKV infection. This review focuses on those other congenital infections, including rubella, congenital cytomegalovirus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and neonatal herpes simplex virus, from which lesso

Zika Virus: An Emerging Global Health Threat.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging healthcare threat. The presence of the mosquito Aedes species across South and Central America in combination with complementary climates have incited an epidemic of locally transmitted cases of ZIKV infection in Brazil. As one of the most significant current public health concerns in the Americas, ZIKV epidemic has been a cause of alarm due to its known and unknown complications. At this point, there has been a clear association between ZIKV infection and severe clinical manifestations in both adults and neonates, including but not limited to neurological defi

Evidence of Mumps Infection Among Children in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Mumps is an acute viral infection and while the infection is usually mild, complications can lead to permanent sequelae including brain damage and deafness. The burden of mumps is currently unknown the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), we therefore assessed susceptibility to mumps infection among children 6-59 months of age. METHODS: In collaboration with the 2013-2014 DRC Demographic and Health Survey, we conducted a serosurvey to assess population immunity to vaccine preventable diseases. Dried blood spot samples were collected from children 6 to 59 months of age and processed

An outbreak of mumps with genetic strain variation in a highly vaccinated student population in Scotland.

An outbreak of mumps within a student population in Scotland was investigated to assess the effect of previous vaccination on infection and clinical presentation, and any genotypic variation. Of the 341 cases, 79% were aged 18-24. Vaccination status was available for 278 cases of whom 84% had received at least one dose of mumps containing vaccine and 62% had received two. The complication rate was 5·3% (mainly orchitis), and 1·2% were admitted to hospital. Genetic sequencing of mumps virus isolated from cases across Scotland classified 97% of the samples as genotype G. Two distinct clusters of

Consequences of perinatal infections with rubella, measles, and mumps.

Measles, mumps, and rubella have recently taken the stage as re-emerging diseases of public health importance-particularly in regards to the consequences seen with perinatal infections. Effective vaccination strategies have successfully reduced the spread of measles, mumps, and rubella in the United States, but a current trend of increased vaccination hesitancy, fear of vaccine safety, and spread of misconceptions surrounding the science of vaccines have led to a relative resurgence of these diseases in the developed world. This article aims to explore why measles, mumps, and rubella should co

Association between microcephaly, Zika virus infection, and other risk factors in Brazil: final report of a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: A Zika virus epidemic emerged in northeast Brazil in 2015 and was followed by a striking increase in congenital microcephaly cases, triggering a declaration of an international public health emergency. This is the final report of the first case-control study evaluating the potential causes of microcephaly: congenital Zika virus infection, vaccines, and larvicides. The published preliminary report suggested a strong association between microcephaly and congenital Zika virus infection. METHODS: We did a case-control study in eight public maternity hospitals in Recife, Brazil. Cases

Immunization Practices of U.S. Obstetrician/Gynecologists for Pregnant Patients.

INTRODUCTION: U.S. obstetrician/gynecologists play a critical role as vaccinators of pregnant women. However, little is known about their current immunization practices. Thus, study objectives were to determine (1) practices related to assessment of vaccination status and vaccine delivery for pregnant patients; (2) barriers to stocking and administering vaccines; and (3) factors associated with administering both influenza and tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccines. METHODS: An e-mail and mail survey among a national sample of obstetrician/gynecologists conducted July-Oc

[Incidence of biological accidents at work and immune status for vaccine-preventable diseases among resident physicians in specialist training at Ferrara University Hospital].

The hospital as a work environment is particularly characterized by various risks for healthcare workers (HCWs). The main risk is represented by biological accidents, associated with the parenteral transmission of pathogens. Biological injuries can occur during the care service and the manipulation of biological fluids. Hepatitis B (and hepatitis D), hepatitis C and HIV are the most common infections transmitted by biological injuries. Physicians should acquire awareness of the risks associated with their professional activity during their training as medical residents (MRs). Some infectious d
