Maternal rubella immunity gaps in the vaccine era: a seroepidemiological study of pregnant women in Jiangsu, China.

BACKGROUND: Rubella elimination has substantially reduced virus circulation in China, but the changing pattern of immunity among women entering reproductive age remains unclear. We assessed the contemporary rubella immunity profile among pregnant women in Jiangsu Province. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional serological study of 1,196 pregnant women in Jiangsu Province. Rubella-specific IgG antibodies were quantitatively measured. Seropositivity and antibody concentrations were compared across maternal age and birth cohorts. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression was used to assess nonl

Multiple Sclerosis and Viruses: « Liaisons Dangereuses ».

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex, multifactorial neurodegenerative disease with an aetiology that is still partially elusive. Several risk factors are associated with MS development including genetic predisposition and various environmental stressors; however, recently, viral infections have gained significant attention as a crucial environmental trigger. Despite the well-established link between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and MS susceptibility, a single-pathogen model fails to clearly characterise the molecular cascades driving the disease, suggesting that the transition from infection to a

Measles Vaccine Boosters in Immunocompromised Adults to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality From Acute Measles Infection: A Scoping Review.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness associated with significant global mortality, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. As vaccine hesitancy continues to increase following the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with a lack of measles-specific antiviral agents, the risk of outbreaks and epidemics remains elevated. Immunocompromised individuals have a higher risk of serious complications from measles, especially because the live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine may be contraindicated in severely immunocompromised patients. As such, these individuals depend on herd im

[Ultrasound diagnosis of fetal infections: current possibilities and limitations].

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features. METHOD: This retrospective s

[TORCH infections during pregnancy: clinical significance, diagnosis, and treatment].

TORCH infections (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) constitute the classic group of congenital infections that may result in severe fetal and neonatal consequences. Transplacentally transmitted infections have been a critical component of prenatal care for decades. Although screening for this group of infections has been performed in Hungary since 1971, diagnostic approaches and screening strategies have undergone significant transformation. Current international recommendations, as well as national professional guidelines, no

Association of rubella and parvovirus B19 IgM positivity and suspected rheumatoid arthritis: a retrospective analysis from a large US national reference laboratory (2014-2023).

OBJECTIVE: Rubella and parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections can present with arthritis-like symptoms in adults instead of typical dermatological symptoms. We quantify associations between rubella and B19V, respectively, with arthritis-like complications using real-world diagnostic testing. DESIGN: Cross-sectional and retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Reference laboratories across the USA. PARTICIPANTS: Participants with IgM tests for rubella (N=211 917) or B19V (N=644 473) performed at Labcorp from 2014 to 2023. Among these participants, participants with IgM tests for rubella (N=1867) or B1

Maternal infection during pregnancy and the risk of childhood cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal infections during pregnancy may increase the risk of childhood cancer (CC) in offspring by affecting foetal immunity and genetics. Existing evidence seems inconclusive, necessitating a comprehensive review to understand this association. We aimed to evaluate the risk of various CC outcomes following prenatal exposure to different types of maternal infections. METHODS: We searched Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and bibliographies for relevant studies from inception to October 2025. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (ID:CRD42023483706). We in

Nanomedicine in maternal viral infections: advancing prenatal therapies for fetal protection.

Viral infections during pregnancy can lead to several adverse outcomes, including miscarriage, stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction, and neonatal complications, which may manifest congenital malformations and organ dysfunction. Infants who exhibit symptoms following maternal infection tend to have poorer health outcomes compared to their asymptomatic counterparts. Various viruses are known to cause birth defects, with the most common being cytomegalovirus (CMV), rubella virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), Zika virus, and human i

Preterm Finnish-type congenital nephrotic syndrome (NPHS1 variant) with multisystem involvement and TORCH coinfection.

This report describes a preterm male neonate who presented in his second month of life with seizures, anasarca and severe hypoalbuminaemia. Laboratory evaluation revealed heavy proteinuria, electrolyte disturbances and microbiological seropositivity (cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, rubella), while urine culture isolated Klebsiella Whole-exome sequencing confirmed a homozygous NPHS1 variant consistent with Finnish-type congenital nephrotic syndrome. The infant required mechanical ventilation, inotropic support, daily albumin infusions, antiviral therapy and intensive electrolyte correcti

Fatal Systemic Granulomatous Disease Associated with Vaccine-Derived Rubella Virus in AIOLOS-Associated Immunodeficiency.

We present a case of disseminated granulomatous disease associated with live attenuated vaccine-derived rubella virus (VDRV) in an immunodeficient patient who subsequently developed fatal multi-organ failure, including neurological deficits, with VDRV detected in the cerebrospinal fluid. Posthumous genetic analysis found a heterozygous missense mutation in IKZF3, a gene where haploinsufficiency is linked to immunodeficiency and immune dysregulation. Functional studies demonstrated that this mutation decreases AIOLOS protein stability and half-life, and family members carrying the same mutation

Maternal vaccination in the immunization era: implementation, uptake, and emerging vaccines.

Maternal immunization has ascended as a cornerstone of contemporary strategies aimed at safeguarding pregnant women, fetuses, and children in early childhood against vaccine-preventable diseases. The profound physiological and immunological adaptations inherent to gestation heighten maternal susceptibility to infectious morbidity, while several pathogens, including influenza, pertussis, COVID-19, rubella, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pose significant risks of adverse maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. Although an extensive body of evidence attests to the safety and effectiveness

Virus-associated immune dysregulation presenting as facial granulomatous dermatitis in DiGeorge syndrome: A case series.

Chronic granulomatous dermatitis in children with inborn errors of immunity poses diagnostic challenges, particularly when persistent viral detection coexists with impaired T-cell surveillance. We report two children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome who developed chronic facial granulomatous dermatitis in the setting of T-cell immunodeficiency and EBV detection. Both patients had persistent facial plaques refractory to conventional antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory treatment, elevated EBV DNA in blood and granulomatous lymphohistiocytic infiltrates on skin biopsy. Tissue mNGS identified EBV in

Immune and non-immune hydrops fetalis in a resource-limited setting: a report of two cases.

Hydrops fetalis is a fetal condition characterized by abnormal fluid accumulation in multiple fetal compartments and is associated with high perinatal mortality. Unlike high-income settings, both immune and non-immune hydrops fetalis (IHF and NIHF) remain relevant in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where evaluation and specialized care are often delayed or inaccessible. We report two cases of hydrops fetalis diagnosed antenatally at a tertiary referral hospital in Kenya, followed through delivery and outcome. Case one involved immune hydrops fetalis due to suspected non-Rhesus alloim

[Good practices for the use of biological tools in infectious diseases during pregnancy].

Biological tools are essential in obstetrical infectious diseases for determining immune status, systematic screening, or confirming a primary infection in pregnant women. Early detection of fetal-risk infections, even asymptomatic, is key. Expert centers and multidisciplinary prenatal diagnostic centers are recommended for complex cases.Serological analysis, particularly IgM and IgG testing, is vital for identifying primary infections. Timing and patient history (clinical, vaccination, travel) must be considered. In specific cases, follow-up tests (IgG avidity or PCR) are required for confirm

[Vaccination for pregnant women].

A vaccine is a preparation capable of inducing a specific and lasting immune response in the vaccinated patient to protect him in the event of exposure to the pathogen, against infection or to mitigate its consequences. Vaccination during pregnancy has a dual objective: to protect the vaccinated pregnant woman from potentially more severe infections due to pregnancy (flu, Covid-19) and to protect the newborn from birth from potentially serious infections during his first months (whooping cough, respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]). Currently four vaccines are recommended for all pregnant women (

Rubella immunity and vaccination coverage among medical students in Catalonia: a multicentre seroprevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Rubella is a vaccine-preventable exanthematous viral infection whose most severe complication is congenital rubella syndrome. In countries such as Spain, most medical students are women, a group in which maintaining vaccination coverage is particularly relevant. This study aims to describe vaccination coverage and seroprevalence of protective antibody titres against rubella among medical students in Catalonia, as well as their perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge regarding vaccination. METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in four university teaching units in

Therapy With Doxycycline and Hydroxychloroquine Enables Surgical Excision of Ulcerated Cutaneous Granulomas in a Patient With Ataxia Telangiectasia.

The rubella virus vaccine strain can cause granulomas in patients with inborn errors of immunity that may evolve into chronic, recalcitrant ulcers. This report details treatment of ulcerated rubella granulomas in a patient with ataxia telangiectasia with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine resulting in partial ulcer healing within 4 weeks, which in turn enabled surgical excision. Though this treatment did not cure or clear the rubella virus, that is known to persist in patients with inborn errors of immunity like ataxia telangiectasia, it enabled durable local lesion control of typically chroni
