Pediatric periorificial dermatitis is a papulopustular eruption found around the facial orifices in children. Although the treatment of the disease has been largely anecdotal and experience-based, studies have shown that topical calcineurin inhibitors, as well as other topical and oral antibiotics, such as metronidazole, can be effective treatment options. However, most of the studies with a sizable number of patients have been based on the Caucasian population. Herein, we evaluated the clinical efficacy of topical calcineurin inhibitors and topical/oral metronidazole in 24 Korean patients wit

Childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis (CGPD), considered a clinical variant of perioral dermatitis, typically affects prepubertal children of African descent. It is a condition of unknown etiology characterized by the presence of a monomorphic yellow-brown papular eruption limited to the perioral, perinasal, and periocular regions that histopathologically shows a granulomatous pattern. This disorder should be differentiated from other conditions as granulomatous rosacea, sarcoidosis, and lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei. We report a case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with fles

Allergic reactions sometimes participate in the development of perioral and oral diseases, indicating the need for appropriate allergen assessment. This review discusses current knowledge on the potential allergic reactions to different dental materials in patients with oral and perioral diseases. Aside from allergies to various dental materials, similar non-allergic, non-immune contact reactions (irritant or toxic) can occur. Among dental materials, the most frequent allergens are alloys, followed by rubber materials, polymers and acrylates. Allergic reactions to dental alloys that contain ni

BACKGROUND: Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an aminohydrolase involved in the catabolism of purine nucleotides and irreversibly deaminizes adenosine and deoxyadenosine to inosine and deoxyinosine. ADA enzyme deficiency results in the loss of functional properties of B and T lymphocytes. Demodex species have been reported to be transmitted between humans through close contact and to play a role in the pathogenesis of rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, micropapillary-pruritic dermatitis and blepharitis. The present study aimed to compare serum ADA levels in D. foll

Minocycline is a medication commonly used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. The central nervous system-induced side effects of minocycline include headaches, pseudotumor cerebri, ataxia, and vestibular dysfunction. Many minocycline-related side effects have been presented in the literature, however, reports of depersonalization symptoms induced by the medication are rare. We present the case of a 37-year-old female diagnosed with perioral dermatitis treated with minocycline, who within 1 week suffered from severe depersonalization symptoms. The pathophysiologic mechanism of depersonalization

Demodex mites are commensal inhabitants of the pilosebaceous unit that are typically absent or at low numbers in childhood. When they are present, they can cause a primary eruption or exacerbate an underlying facial dermatosis. Here we report five cases of demodicosis occurring in childhood, the clinical presentations, and responses to treatment. Papulopustular lesions predominate, prompting the advice "pustules on noses, think demodicosis!"

Periorificial dermatitis, mostly known as perioral dermatitis, is a benign inflammatory facial dermatosis which can be a severe burden and even disfiguring and psychologically disturbing. The disease still presents a challenge for physicians when it comes to etiology and appropriate therapy. Although a variety of extrinsic and intrinsic factors have been proposed as etiopathogenetic factors, none of these fully explain complex pathogenesis of the disease. There is more evidence that supports beliefs that the epidermal barrier dysfunction is an underlying main pathogenic factor that contributes

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In Switzerland, telemedicine has been an integral part of the health care system for many years and plays a significant role in basic medical care. Telemedicine is particularly suitable for skin diseases, thanks to the possibility of diagnostic imaging. The aim of this article is to point to services and structures needed using the example of a successful telemedicine center (Medgate Tele Clinic, Basel, Switzerland) and to illustrate the wide range of applications of telemedicine available in Switzerland based on examples from teledermatology.

BACKGROUND: Recently, treatment with acaricides, which is aimed at reducing excessive proliferation of demodex mites, has gained popularity due to its providing a significant improvement in the symptoms of diseases, such as rosacea, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and perioral dermatitis. The effect of IPL on demodex mites was reported in skin biopsy specimens in three patients; however, to the best of our knowledge, no study exists to date, which evaluates the effect of pulsed dye laser (PDL) on demodex density (Dd) in larger patient group. We aim here in to observe the Dd before and after PDL therap

Demodicosis is an ectoparasitic cutaneous infestation of pilosebaceous unit caused by Demodex mites. Demodex spp. are considered to be pathogenic when they increase in number and infect dermis. They can be the cause of diseases such as pityriasis folliculorum, papulopustular rosacea, granulomatous rosacea, inflammatory papule, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, blepharitis and folliculitis. These mites can be found in most mammals including human. Canine and feline demodicosis is a well-known example of severe dermatitis caused by the proliferation of Demodex mites. Dogs are one of the most po

OBJECTIVES: Potassium iodide (KI) is a medication that has been used for decades in dermatology and it is mentioned as a treatment option in all major dermatology textbooks. Yet, there is little recent information on its efficacy. In our study, we wanted to retrospectively evaluate the therapy response to KI in our patients.
METHODS: The hospital information system was searched for patients treated with KI at the Department of Dermatology (University Hospital Zurich) in the last 20 years (January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2017). A total of 52 patients were found and, subsequently, 35 patients w
