Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) is a combination preservative used in personal care and household products and is a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Recently, MI alone, without MCI, has been increasingly used in consumer products in attempts to minimize allergic reactions. Wet wipes are extensively tested and traditionally believed to be innocuous. MI in wet wipes ("baby wipes") has not been previously reported to cause ACD in children in the United States. Only 1 previous report of ACD in a child in Belgium has been recently reported. We report 6 c

Minocycline (MCN) is a member of the tetracycline family that is commonly used to treat dermatologic conditions such as acne and perioral dermatitis; however, it also has been associated with a number of adverse effects, including drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS). We report the case of a 46-year-old woman who developed a rash, fever, and eosinophilia during treatment with MCN for perioral dermatitis. Although MCN was discontinued and the patient was administered oral corticosteroids for several months, she subsequently died from multiorgan failure with giant cell m

Perioral dermatitis is a common acneiform facial eruption found in both adults and children. Its variants are periorificial and granulomatous periorificial dermatitis. The etiology of perioral dermatitis remains unknown; however, topical corticosteroid use on the face commonly precedes the manifestation of this condition. There are an overwhelming number of treatment options for perioral dermatitis, and the options in children are slightly different from those in adults for both systemic medications and topical treatment. This article provides a literature review of the various applicable trea

CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old patient of African ancestry presented with multiple papules in the perioral, perinasal and periocular areas. Histopathology showed sarcoidal granulomas.
DIAGNOSIS: After exclusion of systemic sarcoidosis, the diagnosis of childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis was made.
THERAPY: Topical treatment with erythromycin resulted in complete regression.
CONCLUSION: Childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis is mainly observed in dark-skinned children of African, Caribbean, or Asian origin. The nosological position of the dermatosis is controversial. Origi

BACKGROUND: Perioral dermatitis (POD) is a common inflammatory skin disease without standard therapy.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the clinical value of a soothing fluid for the treatment of POD.
METHODS: We included 51 patients with POD in this 8-week clinical trial. The Toleriane Fluide Efficacy in Perioral Dermatitis (TOLPOD) study had an open-label design and involved twice-daily application of Toleriane Fluide, a soothing cosmetic fluid. Clinical assessment of POD was performed with a predefined questionnaire including the POD severity index (PODSI). Control visits were made after 4

Perioral dermatitis is a relatively common inflammatory facial skin disorder that predominantly affects women. It is rarely diagnosed in children. A typical perioral dermatitis presentation involves the eruption of papules and pustules that may recur over weeks to months, occasionally with fine scales. The differential diagnosis includes seborrheic dermatitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, acne vulgaris, lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei, polymorphous light eruption, steroid-induced rosacea, granulomatous perioral dermatitis, contact dermatitis (allergic and irritant), and even basal cell car

Human Demodex mites (Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis) hold a high rank in the evolutionary and phylogenetic hierarchy of the skin microbiome, although in most people their presence is of no consequence. While human demodicosis is a skin disease sui generis, it can mimic many other inflammatory dermatoses, such as folliculitis, rosacea and perioral dermatitis, leading to unspecific and confusing descriptions in the literature. Here, we propose to classify human demodicosis into a primary form and a secondary form, which is associated mainly with immunosuppression. The clinical manifesta

BACKGROUND: The oral tetracyclines, especially minocycline hydrochloride, are often used as an effective treatment for perioral dermatitis; however, they are sometimes difficult to use, especially in children, because of the side effects.
OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of β-lactam antibiotics was evaluated in three cases of perioral dermatitis.
METHODS: Three Japanese patients with perioral dermatitis were treated with cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride hydrate per os 100-300 mg/day. They were one girl (aged 10 years) and two adult women (aged 32 and 37 years respectively). One of the adult patie

Childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis (CGPD) is a condition included in the spectrum of rosacea and perioral dermatitis that affects prepubescent children. It is characterized by papular eruptions located around the mouth, nose, and eyes that histopathologically show a granulomatous pattern. We report a 9-year-old girl with CGPD who required treatment with an oral antibiotic. Oral metronidazole was administered because of its known efficacy in adult rosacea and its safety in children. The patient responded well to this therapy, showing resolution of the lesions.

Cheilitis is a superficial inflammatory condition of the lip. It can occur either alone or be associated with stomatitis or perioral eczema. Contact hypersensitivity reactions are a frequent cause of cheilitis. Cosmetic and hygiene products are the most usual causes. Less frequently, allergic cheilitis is caused by contact with musical instruments, topical medicines or food allergens. Cases of cheilitis induced by dental material are rare and debated. The diagnosis relies on patch tests, which start with the European baseline series and the patient's personal cosmetic and topical products. Thi

Lupoid perioral dermatitis is classified as a special form of perioral dermatitis with dense aggregations of red-brown papules which display a lupoid infiltrate on diascopy. There are various treatment options ranging from total avoidance of all topical substances to different topical treatment. Cases resistant to therapy require systemic treatment, which, however, is off-label use. In our case we were able to achieve a significant improvement with systemic therapy with isotretinoin over a period of 6 months.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of various irritant dermatitis involves the elimination of the casual or favoring factor, the control of aggravating factors, and administration of topical agents. Even though corticosteroids are extensively used in these conditions to reduce the inflammation, it can also result in undesirable side effects. Hence, there is a need for a non steroidal topical agent to be used in these conditions.
AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of repairing cream RV 2427B in children and adults in irritant dermatitis care.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this phase III open lab

Hypersalivation is a common and distressing complaint in children with neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy. Complications associated with severe drooling include daily changes of clothing, perioral dermatitis, dental problems, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia, which potentially have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of the patient and carer. In this paper we update our previous work to show the potential benefits of ultrasound-guided injection of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) into the submandibular gland and report on new patients and follow-up data on the existing group.
