Therapeutic Efficacy and Safety of Botulinum Toxin Type A in Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: A Systematic Review.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections have a well-known cosmetic outcome and safety profile in a variety of medical conditions. Recent studies have shown promising results for possible use in treating erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BoNT-A injections in patients with ETR. A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases to identify relevant studies. Eligible articles were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated BoNT-A injections in adults diagnosed with ETR. Studies involving other rosacea

Laser and light-based therapies in the management of rosacea: an updated systematic review.

Unlike other rosacea therapies which need daily takings or applications over long periods, the edge of lasers and light-based therapies (LLBT) is the limited number of sessions to achieve improvement. The proper selection of the adequate physical device in accordance with the patients' skin features and rosacea-related signs and symptoms should be considered and the management with physical sources should be updated as new data become available. This article reviews and discusses the current use of lasers and light-based therapies in rosacea with reference to all the available literature. This

Spotlight on brimonidine topical gel 0.33% for facial erythema of rosacea: safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability.

BACKGROUND: Brimonidine tartrate is a highly selective alpha 2 agonist that induces direct vasoconstriction of small arteries and veins, thereby reducing vasodilation and edema. OBJECTIVE: To review the current literature regarding the safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability of brimonidine 0.33% gel. METHODS: A PubMed search was performed using the terms brimonidine 0.33% gel, rosacea, safety, efficacy, and acceptability. Peer-reviewed clinical trials and case reports from 2012 to 2016 were screened for inclusion of safety, efficacy, and/or patient acceptability data. RESULTS: Brimonidi

Photodynamic therapy in a series of rosacea patients.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common disease that often has a chronic intermittent course despite current treatment; therefore, additional treatment options are desirable. The pathogenesis of the disease is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We have previously suggested that photodynamic therapy (MAL-PDT) may be of benefit as rosacea therapy. The purpose of this study was to further assess the possible benefit of this treatment of rosacea. METHODS: An exploratory review of case notes from rosacea patients treated with PDT was performed. Patients referred to our department with rosacea were offered PDT if reque

Systematic review of rosacea treatments.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common chronic skin and ocular condition. It is unclear which treatments are most effective. We have conducted a Cochrane review of rosacea therapies. This article is a distillation of that work. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the evidence for the efficacy and safety of rosacea therapies. METHODS: Multiple databases were systematically searched. Randomized controlled trials in people with moderate to severe rosacea were included. Study selection, assessment of methodologic quality, data extraction, and analysis were carried out by two independent researchers. RESULT

Tacrolimus ointment for the treatment of steroid-induced rosacea: a preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Excessive topical corticosteroid application to facial areas commonly leads to steroid-induced rosacea. This may be a recalcitrant problem that requires months of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy before it resolves. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the use of tacrolimus ointment, a macrolide anti-inflammatory ointment for the treatment of 3 patients with steroid-induced rosacea. METHODS: Three patients with steroid-induced rosacea applied tacrolimus ointment, 0.075% twice daily for 7 to 10 days. Patients were also instructed to avoid topical corticoster

Involvement of immune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of rosacea.

Twenty-five patients with rosacea were compared with twenty-five control subjects for previous medical history and tests of immune function. Rosacea patients were found to have a higher incidence of disorders of the auto-immune type and were significantly more difficult to sensitize to DNCB than the controls. In addition, twelve of the rosacea patients and eleven other rosacea patients had biopsies which were examined by the direct immunofluorescence technique. In only five was the test negative. In the remainder deposits of IgM and/or IgG and/or complement were found at the dermo-epidermal ju
