Cutaneous and subcutaneous lumps are frequently encountered in the pediatric population and are usually benign. Although some lesions can be diagnosed clinically, ultrasound plays a pivotal role in evaluation by delineating lesion morphology, depth, extent, internal composition, and vascularity. Technological advances in high-frequency transducers and image resolution have significantly improved visualization of superficial soft tissues, enhancing diagnostic confidence. Despite substantial overlap in sonographic appearance among different lesions, specific imaging characteristics can help narr

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is associated with long-term gynecologic complications, including delayed paraclitoral cystic lesions. However, the clinicopathologic spectrum and postoperative outcomes of these lesions remain insufficiently characterized, particularly in high-prevalence settings.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective clinicopathologic study included women with a history of FGM/C who underwent surgical excision of paraclitoral lesions between January 2017 and March 2025. Clinical presentation, surgical management, histopathological findings, and posto

BACKGROUND: Dermoid and epidermoid tumors are rare lesions that affect the skull and spinal canal, with an incidence of ≈ 0.9% of cases. They are benign lesions originating from ectodermal tissue during embryonic development. They may be congenital or acquired, and the latter are usually secondary to iatrogenic causes (such as lumbar puncture, neuraxial anesthesia or surgical procedures) or to penetrating trauma.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman with a history of 2 lumbar punctures for neuraxial anesthesia. 5 years after the last procedure, she started with low-intensity pain in the upper rig

Oral epidermoid cysts are developmental lesions that account for less than 0.04% of all reported cases and typically occur in the floor of the mouth; gingival involvement is exceedingly rare. This report describes a 23-year-old female presenting with an asymptomatic, whitish papule on the attached gingiva near the right mandibular canine. Histopathologically, the lesion showed a cystic cavity mainly lined by orthokeratinized stratified squamous epithelium containing lamellar keratin, without cutaneous adnexal structures in the fibrous connective tissue capsule. No recurrence was observed after

Neurologic deficits after neuraxial labor analgesia are rare but require timely evaluation. We describe a multiparous woman who developed new bilateral ankle weakness and distal lower extremity paresthesia six hours after spontaneous vaginal delivery under neuraxial labor analgesia. Analgesia was provided with a dural puncture epidural technique, and two dural puncture epidural procedures were performed because the first epidural catheter was ineffective. No paresthesia or blood aspiration occurred during either procedure, and no motor block was observed during labor. According to our institut

INTRODUCTION: Epidermoid cysts (EC) are rare intracranial lesions, particularly uncommon in children, arising from ectodermal inclusions during neural tube closure. Although they are often located in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), data on complication and recurrence rates after surgery for EC in this location in children remain limited.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from children (≤ 18 years) surgically treated for EC in CPA at the Oslo University Hospital-Rikshospitalet between 2004 and 2024, with > 1 year of follow-up. Clinical presentation, imaging, and surgical outcomes wer

OBJECTIVE: Spinal intradural epidermoid cysts (sIECs) are rare, benign neoplasms comprising < 3% of intraspinal tumors in children. Their nonspecific clinical presentation and rarity often lead to diagnostic delays, particularly in the pediatric population. Authors of this study present 2 pediatric sIEC cases and conduct a systematic review of the literature to characterize the clinical features, management strategies, and outcomes of pediatric sIEC.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, searching the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases

BACKGROUND: Intracranial epidermoid tumors (ETs) are rare, benign lesions that often arise within the cerebellopontine angle and are typically slow-growing with favorable outcomes. Malignant transformation is exceedingly rare and poorly understood, with limited data on imaging findings, medical and operative management, and overall survival.
METHODS: We conducted a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-guided systematic review and pooled analysis of 68 patients from 58 studies with pathologically confirmed malignant transformation of intracranial ETs. Clinical pre

Cystic squamous cell carcinoma (cySCC) is a variant of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma that manifests clinically as a cystic lesion instead of a solid tumor. Owing to their benign appearance, accurate diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. We report a case of a 55-year-old male presenting with a scalp lesion. The patient was keen for removal of the lesion as it was bothersome, although there were no overt sinister features on history nor examination. An excision biopsy was performed and histopathological examination revealed a cySCC. A wider excision was subsequently performed and the pa

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare malignant tumor originating from skin appendages. Most cases occur in the periocular region, whereas extraocular SC accounts for only about 25% of cases and is especially rare on the scalp. Extraocular SC often presents without characteristic clinical features, frequently leading to misdiagnosis as benign lesions, such as epidermal cysts. Here, we report a 36-year-old male with an atypical presentation of extraocular SC in the occipital region, highlighting its diagnostic challenges and clinical importance.

RATIONALE: Epidermal cysts are one of the most prevalent skin lesions encountered in clinical practice. Although generally harmless, complications may arise when epidermal cysts are neglected, leading to potentially severe consequences, such as necrotizing fasciitis. Here, we report an unusual case of an extensive soft-tissue defect and necrotizing fasciitis resulting from an untreated epidermal cyst on the upper back.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 37-year-old male patient presented with a 12 × 10 cm epidermal cyst on his back with severe inflammation. The patient was also diagnosed with diabetes melli

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Epidermal cysts and pilomatrixomas are 2 of the most common benign skin lesions in children, yet comprehensive epidemiologic data comparing their distribution remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of these lesions in pediatric patients over a 13-year period at a single institution.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients aged 0 to 18 years who underwent excisional biopsy with histopathologic confirmation between 2012 and 2025. Cases diagnosed as epidermal cysts or pilomatrixomas were included for comparative analysis. Age was cate

A 52-year-old man with multiple scalp nodules for more than 30 years and a right occipital mass that had been progressively enlarging for the past 2 years and rupturing and draining for more than 6 months was pathologically confirmed to be secondary malignant proliferating trichilemmal cyst (MPTC). 18F-FDG PET/CT showed active glucose metabolism in the scalp lesion and similar hypermetabolism in the dorsal and right iliac spine skin nodules. This case demonstrates the significant advantages of 18F-FDG PET/CT whole-body imaging in evaluating malignant proliferating trichilemmal cyst, a rare dis

Epidermal cysts are among the most common benign subcutaneous tumors and can undergo malignant transformation at a rate of 0.1%-2.2%. However, there are limited studies that summarize the radiological characteristics of malignant lesions arising from epidermal cysts. This study aims to report 5 patients diagnosed with malignant transformation of epidermal cysts, emphasizing the importance of radiological assessment in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions. The five patients were in their 50s to 80s, and all patients were male. The duration from the time a patient recognized a lesion to

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) may develop in chronic inflammatory settings, but clinicopathological features and outcomes remain poorly defined. To characterize clinical features and disease-specific survival (DSS) of cSCC arising from HS or EC in a single-institution cohort, and to assess baseline neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a readily available inflammatory marker. We retrospectively reviewed 231 patients with cSCC diagnosed at a tertiary academic center between January 2013 and December 2024. After excluding 36 without baseline NLR data, a total of 195 patients were an

Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC) is a rare, well-differentiated variant of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma that is frequently misdiagnosed because of its deceptively benign clinical appearance. We report an unusual case of CC arising on the back that initially mimicked an epidermal cyst. A 55-year-old Japanese woman presented with a slowly enlarging subcutaneous nodule on her upper back that had been present for three years. Physical examination suggested an epidermal cyst, whereas ultrasonography demonstrated atypical findings that prompted excisional biopsy. However, the lesion rapidly enlarged

Epidermoid cyst of the spleen is a rare, benign lesion of congenital origin most commonly seen as an incidental finding in children and young adults; however, comprehensive clinicopathologic analysis of this entity is limited. We describe the clinicopathologic characteristics of epidermoid cysts arising in the spleen in 13 patients, diagnosed between 1995 and 2025 at our institution. Most patients were diagnosed as young adults with a female predominance (11:2). The cysts were frequently identified as either incidental findings or in the setting of imaging performed for evaluation of abdominal

This case "Management of an intramuscular caecal epidermoid cyst in the robotic surgery era" documents the work-up and management of a rare entity, with the aid of the robotic surgery platform. There are 12 reported cases in the literature of epidermoid cysts arising from the caecum since 1961. Ranging from 8- to 75-year-olds, four of the epidermoid cysts were intramuscular, with six being subserosal. Given the rarity of this entity and the pre-operative diagnostic uncertainty, often both CT and MRI are used during pre-operative work-up. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of int
