Epidermoid cysts are prevalent noncancerous cutaneous lesions known to exhibit unusually extended periods of growth. In this study, we present a remarkable case of an epidermoid cyst located on the scalp, which exhibited a growth period of 76 years, the longest growth time documented in the literature to date. The presence of the mass was noted at birth, and it exhibited gradual growth throughout the years, with a notable acceleration observed during the final 2 years. The patient underwent a surgical excision, and the histopathological analysis was consistent with epidermoid cyst, featuring l

BACKGROUND: This case report highlights a rare instance of concurrent keloid and epidermal cyst development at an ear cartilage harvest site following rhinoplasty in a 25-year-old woman. Both conditions, which typically stem from skin trauma, seldom occur together, demonstrating the exceptional characteristics of this case.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient underwent successful surgical removal of both the keloid and the epidermal cyst. Postoperative treatment included the use of silicone sheets, gel, and oral tranilast to reduce scarring. No recurrence was observed over a 6-mo follow-up period, indi

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts are benign, slow growing extra-axial lesions most commonly found in the cerebellopontine angle that have a characteristic imaging pattern of restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).
METHODS: A 10-year-old male with a history of asthma and diabetes was found to have a lesion within the fourth ventricle on a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain study. MRI showed a well-circumscribed vermian lesion without contrast enhancement or restricted diffusion with mild hydrocephalus. He was referred to the neurosurgical service once he acutely developed sym

An uncommon case of an intratarsal keratinous cyst at the lid margin is described in a 73-year-old Asian man using long-term antiglaucoma eye drops. There was no history of trauma or surgery of the upper eyelid. A yellow solid mass attached to the tarsal plate had been located there for about 3 years. It imitated a sebaceous gland carcinoma or steatocystoma simplex. Excision biopsy showed cystic formation and leaked yellow creamy substance without hair. Histopathological and immunological findings helped make the diagnosis of an intratarsal keratinous cyst. To the best of the authors' knowledg

Squamous cell carcinoma of the orbit is uncommon as there is no squamous epithelium in the orbit. Thus, mechanistically squamous cell carcinoma of the orbit most commonly arises from a cutaneous lesion. Although orbital epidermoid cysts are thought to have very low malignant potential, these lesions possess squamous epithelium and theoretically can undergo malignant transformation. Here, the authors present the case of a 63-year-old woman who presented with a 3-month history of diplopia and forehead tenderness with an orbital extraconal lesion on MRI consistent with a ruptured epidermoid cyst.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Intracranial epidermoid tumors (ETs) are rare, benign lesions that present significant challenges in neurosurgical management due to their propensity to encase vital neurovascular structures. We aimed to evaluate the impact of clinical, demographic, and tumor-specific factors on surgical decisions (gross total resection [GTR] vs. subtotal resection [STR]) and outcomes and identify patient clusters with distinct profiles and outcomes post-resection.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 72 patients with ET treated from 1998 to 2022, employing multivariable logistic regress

Surgical removal of epidermoid cysts can result in "cyst spray," posing a nuisance and risk to the surgeon, staff, and patients. Employing simple techniques at the time of anesthesia administration may decrease exposure to cyst spray. We describe 2 methods that can help: (1) placing an antiseptic-soaked gauze pad over a premarked lesion, or (2) covering the cyst with a clear biohazard bag.

Here, we report an unusual case of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow caused by a giant epidermal cyst. A 76-year-old man was assessed on an outpatient basis for ulnar numbness of the left hand that had persisted for 6 months. A soft, elastic subcutaneous mass 6 cm in size was noted on his left elbow. He felt numbness on the ulnar aspect of the left fourth and fifth fingers, corresponding to the area innervated by the ulnar nerve, which worsened upon elbow flexion. An electrophysiological study revealed ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. To remove the subcutaneous mass at the left elbow and open up the

Background: This report aims to present the case of a pediatric patient with a recurrent tumor in the superolateral orbit. Clinical Presentation: An 8-year-old patient was initially treated for a tumor in the superolateral orbit via a transconjunctival approach. The histopathological diagnosis was epidermoid cyst. Postoperatively, chronic inflammation and fistula developed in the lateral canthus area. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a residual tumor posterior to the original tumor location. The patient was treated via a modified orbitozygomatic (mOZ) craniotomy approach that was originally

INTRODUCTION: Epidermal cysts are intradermal or subcutaneous tumors that can develop as a result of female genital mutilation (FGM) procedures or other traumatic events. The differential diagnosis of epidermal cysts in the vulvar or clitoral region depends on the age of presentation, with non-hormonal conditions like neurofibromatosis and nevus lipomatous cutaneous superficiality being considered in pediatric patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old female presented with urinary retention and a large vulvar mass. Imaging confirmed an epidermal cyst, which was surgically excised with succes

The author wished to detail the life and contributions of Dr. Adelola Adeloye, MBBS, MS, FWCS, FRCS, FACS, FRCP, in hope to pay homage to this giant in Global Neurosurgery. Dr. Adelola Adeloye was born on July 18, 1935 in Illesa, Osun State, present-day South-West Nigeria. The Adeloye-Odeku disease is an eponym for a congenital dermoid or epidermoid inclusion cyst (CDIC/CEDIC) over the anterior fontanelle and below the galea aponeurotica. In 1971, Adeloye and Odeku first described these cysts in 18 Nigerian patients. While overall rare and predominantly noted in children, the Adeloye-Odeku dis

Epidermoid splenic cyst is a rare benign tumour in children, accounting for 10% of all cystic lesions of the spleen and is the most common diagnosis of non-parasitic splenic cysts. Its discovery could be incidental or happen after an imaging workup for a mass or abdominal pain. Since total splenectomy exposes a patient to the occurrence of overwhelming post-splenectomy infection, laparoscopic partial splenectomy has been increasingly popular over the past two decades because it preserves the immune function of the spleen. This technique should only be performed by a well-trained team because o

Fibroadenomas in postmenopausal women are quite uncommon, and so are epidermal inclusion cysts in the breast. The coexistence of both is very rare, and very limited literature is available about this occurrence. We report a postmenopausal female patient with complaints of breast lump masquerading as malignancy on triple assessment which upon subsequent histopathological evaluation was confirmed to be fibroadenoma with intervening multiple epidermal inclusion cysts. In addition, the epidermal inclusions cysts were seen within the fibroadenoma without any association with the overlying skin and

We report an unusual case of an elderly man presenting with formation and rupture of an epidermal inclusion cyst at the level of an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) pocket. The lesion appeared 2 years after ICD implantation, mimicking a decubitus or a pocket infection. Surgical revision showed no signs of infection of the pocket, but the pedunculated lesion was rooted in the subcutaneous tissue, whit an implant base external to the ICD pocket, which was removed and analyzed histologically, confirming the diagnosis of epidermal inclusion cyst. The pathophysiological mechanism of cyst for

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma comprising epithelial and mesenchymal components. It typically appears as slow-growing, skin-coloured nodules on the face and scalp. We report a case of a mid-forties male with a 4 mm nodule on his left temple, initially thought to clinically represent an epidermal inclusion cyst (EIC). Excisional biopsy results identified the lesion as FSCH, characterised by its unique dilated infundibulocystic configuration with radiating sebaceous lobules and associated mesenchymal elements. FSCH can be misdiagnosed for EIC due to simi

Myositis ossificans is a benign ossifying nodule that can affect any type of tissue but is most commonly found in muscle. Occurrence in the soft tissue of the subcutis is less common and has been referred to as panniculitis ossificans. In this case report, we describe a 46-year-old woman who presented with a 1.7 × 2.0 cm lesion on the abdomen that had been present for several months, was painful, and easily irritated by clothing. Initial clinical assessment based on history and physical examination was an epidermal cyst and removal by excision was performed. Initial histologic findings showed

The incidence of anaplastic large cell lymphoma is 0.25 cases per 100,000 people. It usually causes lymphadenopathy and B symptoms; however, diverse cutaneous manifestations can also be observed. We report a rare case of anaplastic large cell lymphoma of the scalp, which presented similarly to a ruptured epidermal cyst. A 77-year-old woman visited the outpatient clinic complaining of scalp masses that had appeared 2 months before. One week before her visit, she had undergone incision and drainage at a local clinic but showed no improvement. Before surgery, facial magnetic resonance imaging rev
