Pilar Cyst of the Dorsal Hand: A Rare Presentation of a Common Cyst.

Pilar cysts are common benign cysts of follicular origin that typically arise in areas of skin containing dense hair follicles such as the scalp. Here we describe a unique case of a young woman who was found to have a pilar cyst on the dorsum of her hand, a rather atypical location given the relative lack of pilosebaceous units. This case illustrates the variability in pilar cyst presentation and the importance of considering a pilar cyst in the differential diagnosis of a patient presenting with a tumor of the dorsal hand.

A Rare Case of Trichilemmal Carcinoma of the Scalp.

Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare, low-grade, malignant adnexal tumor. It is usually less than 3 cm long and arises from the external root sheath of the hair follicle, most commonly in sun-exposed areas of the body. The treatment of choice is wide local excision with tumor-free margins. We present an 88-year-old male patient who presented with an incidental large, dry, fumigating mass on his scalp for a one-year duration requiring surgical excision. The mass, initially thought to be a benign sebaceous cyst, was a 12-cm trichilemmal carcinoma diagnosed based on the histopathologic features

The Incidental Finding of Trichilemmal Cyst in a Patient With Acute Kidney Injury.

This case highlights the importance of thorough clinical examinations from head to toe and the early diagnosis of trichilemmal cysts. We present a case of an incidentally discovered trichilemmal cyst in a 72-year-old patient who presented with acute kidney injury secondary to a urinary tract infection. In rare instances, these cysts can transform into malignant lesions. Therefore, clinicians should be aware of the potential for malignancy when diagnosing and managing trichilemmal cysts.

A Proliferating Trichilemmal Tumor at an Uncommon Site Treated With Radical Excision: A Case Report and Literature Review.

A proliferating trichilemmal tumor (PTT) is a rare, benign, exophytic tumor originating from the isthmus region of the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. Clinically, PTTs manifest as isolated, exophytic, firm nodules that have the potential to ulcerate. These tumors may occasionally originate from a pre-existing trichilemmal cyst, or they can emerge spontaneously. Most exclusively these lesions are seen on the scalp. However, rarely these tumors can be found in other anatomical areas. Our patient had a protruding mass in her shoulder for 20 years, and this is a rare site for the occurrenc

A Hybrid Skin Cyst at an Unusual Location: A Case Report.

Hybrid cysts originate from more than two components of the pilosebaceous unit. The pathogenesis of this cystic lesion remains unclear. Most of the investigated cases have scalp and face predilection. The lesion is predominantly observed in females. We present a case of a 69-year-old woman with a painless cutaneous nodule measuring 0.7 cm on the right calf. After a surgical excision, the histological investigation showed that the normal epidermis was elevated by a deeply encapsulated intradermal cyst, which was lined by two distinct histological types of epithelium with an abrupt transition be

A Unique Role of the Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon's Approach to an Inframammary Proliferating Trichilemmal Cyst: A Case Report.

Trichilemmal cysts, also known as pilar cysts, are commonly found on hair-bearing surfaces, such as the scalp or hairline. These are cysts that form from hair follicles and are benign. We describe an unusual case of a middle-aged lady presenting with a longstanding left-sided inframammary mass that had started growing more in the last year prior to the presentation. She was referred to the breast surgery clinic for further evaluation. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was done for further delineation, which was not distinguished, and histopathological correlation was suggested. A decisio

The Value of Ultrasound for Differentiating Trichilemmal Cysts From Epidermoid Cysts.

OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound (US) in differentiating trichilemmal cysts (TCs) from epidermoid cysts (ECs). METHODS: Based on clinical and ultrasound features, a prediction model was established and validated. 164 cysts in the pilot cohort and another 69 in the validation cohort diagnosed with TCs or ECs histopathologically were evaluated. The same radiologist performed all ultrasound examinations. RESULTS: For clinic features, TCs tended to occur in females compared with ECs (66.7 vs 28.5%; P < .001). In addition, TCs were prone to occ

Scrotal trichilemmal cysts: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Trichilemmal cyst (TC), commonly known as the pilar cyst of the scrotum wall, is an uncommon disease. It is a type of epidermoid cyst (EC) with a benign course, and malignant change is quite rare. This disease is unusual in the scrotum; therefore, multiple cysts in the scrotum are much more unusual. There have been reports of TCs in other parts of the body, but this is the first instance of scrotal TCs in Pakistan. CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss the case of a 60-year-old male patient who presented to the clinic with a right-sided scrotal swelling, which was identified as a right-si

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans of the Scalp Mimicking Trichilemmal Cyst: A Case Report.

We present a case of a 47-year-old female with a swelling on her scalp that was at first thought to be trichilemmal cysts. After two years, she returned to her general practitioner with a larger scalp mass. Following a biopsy, histological analysis revealed dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). She then had the tumor completely removed, resulting in clean margins.

A malignant proliferating trichilemmal cyst arising on the elbow of a man: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Trichilemmal cysts (TCs) are common benign cysts that form from the hair follicles in the skin. Proliferating trichilemmal cysts (PTCs) are rare types of TCs characterized by rapid cellular proliferation. Malignant transformation of PTC (MPTC) is a rare adnexal tumor that account for <0.1% of all skin cancers. TCs and PTCs are benign tumors; however, MPTCs grow rapidly and are prone to metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a solitary pinkish mass on his left elbow. Trichilemmal carcinoma arising from a PTC was confirmed through excisi

A Case of a Giant Trichilemmal Cyst on the Forehead.

Trichilemmal cysts are the most common benign subcutaneous cysts on the scalp. Approximately 90% of trichilemmal cysts appear on the scalp and have trichilemmal keratinization without a granular layer visible on pathological examination. In addition, proliferating trichilemmal tumors, which occur in 2% of trichilemmal cysts, show local recurrence and ulceration, making them highly locally aggressive and requiring careful differentiation. We report the case of a 56-year-old man with a giant trichilemmal cyst on his forehead. After computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, a subcutaneo

Mobile Subcutaneous Calcinosis Cutis: A Case Report of a Mobile Solitary Subepidermal Calcified Nodule on a Woman's Leg and a Review of Mobile Subcutaneous Tumors.

Calcinosis cutis describes the deposition of calcium in the dermis. A case of a 69-year-old woman with idiopathic calcinosis cutis that presented as a mobile subcutaneous nodule is described. The patient had an asymptomatic, firm, mobile subcutaneous nodule on her right lower leg of at least six months duration. The nodule could be easily moved from one location to another. An incisional biopsy was performed. Microscopic examination of the tissue specimen showed islands of basophilic calcium material in dense sclerotic dermal connective tissue establishing the diagnosis of calcinosis cutis. Mo
