The profile of keratin expression in benign warts from various cutaneous and mucosal sites along with dysplastic warts and squamous cell carcinomas has been examined using a panel of monospecific antibodies to epithelial keratins. Viral warts and verrucous keratoses from immunosuppressed renal transplant recipients show a spectrum of squamous atypia from benign lesions, from minimal changes to full thickness dysplasia. Viral warts such as verrucae vulgaris, verrucae plana, and cutaneous horns, when located in close proximity to the eye, can be the cause of chronic, mild conjunctivitis. Removal by chemical cautery using bichloroacetic acid, or by simple excision for pedunculated verrucae, can produce a welcome reduction in symptoms. Chemical cautery may also be employed for the cosmetic treatment of xanthelasma. The proper techniques for cautery and for excision, as well as the evaluation of patients for complications, are discussed.

This is a retrospective study of the cure rates of forty patients with subungual and periungual viral warts treated with carbon dioxide laser vapourisation (total of 69 lesions). 70.6% (48/68) lesions had failed treatment with cryotherapy and/or electrocautery treatment previously. 20/68 were treated with CO2 laser vapourisation as a first line treatment. In 167 unselected patients with renal allografts, after a lag of 3.5 years the prevalence of dysplastic keratotic lesions increased linearly by 6.8%/yr and number of lesions also increased. There was no relationship to sun exposure or skin type. Malignancies occurred in 5 patients after 9 years. Viral warts occurred in 42% but prevalence and extent were not related to time after transplantation or keratoses. Comparison with other drugs and diseases suggests malignant keratoses are initiated in two stages by the cytotoxic effect of azathioprine, the role of immunosuppression remaining unproved.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Although the association between streptococcal infection and guttate psoriasis is well known, to date there has been little information on whether only limited groups and/or serotypes of beta-hemolytic streptococci are involved. One hundred eleven patients with a sudden onset or deterioration of psoriasis were investigated for evidence of streptococcal infection. Of these patients, 34 had acute guttate psoriasis, 30 had a guttate flare of chronic psoriasis, 37 had chronic plaque psoriasis, and 10 had other types of psoriasis.

Expression of the cellular p53 tumour-suppressor protein was examined in 78 epidermal tumours, including basal and squamous cell carcinomas, keratoacanthomas, solar keratoses, Bowen's disease and viral warts. The development of cutaneous proliferative lesions following renal transplantation has been well documented in the literature. Ninety-eight patients with 10-23 years of uninterrupted immunosuppressive therapy due to renal transplants were investigated for signs of skin disease. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of skin diseases especially viral warts among Egyptian slaughterhouse workers. 535 subjects working at a manual and semiautomatic slaughterhouses and a meat manufacturing factory (exposed and non-exposed to raw meat & meat products) as well as a control group of 322 persons working at a textile factory at Cairo area were dermatologically examined at the workplace. We report the pathology of benign and malignant skin lesions from 13 renal allograft recipients.
