A 40-year-old woman with a family history of gastric, pulmonary, and endometrial cancers (parents and grandparents) was referred to our institution with a 3-year history of progressive pruritus with palmar and plantar papules. On physical examination, there were keratotic yellowish pinpoint papules on the hands (Figure 1) and yellowish keratotic plaques and papules on the plantar pressure points (Figure 2). The diagnosis of punctate palmoplantar keratoderma was confirmed histopathologically (Figure 3), and treatment was initiated with 30% urea cream, which proved helpful. Molecular studies wer

CONTEXT: Cutaneous warts can affect up to 7-12% of the general population. Usually diagnosed clinically, there may be diagnostic dilemmas in atypical presentations or immunocompromised patients. Radiofrequency ablation is a common method of treatment of warts, but recurrences occur due to incomplete removal. Dermoscopy has been used in the diagnosis of various infectious dermatoses including warts.
AIMS: The study aimed to assess dermoscopic features of various types of viral warts and its efficacy in monitoring the treatment response following radiofrequency ablation.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: P

BACKGROUND: Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been proven effective in treating viral warts. Since anticarcinogenic as well as anti-inflammatory properties are ascribed to the substance, its use has been evaluated in the context of different dermatoses. The effect of EGCG on interface dermatitis (ID), however, has not yet been explored.
OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the effect of EGCG on an epidermal human in vitro model of ID.
METHODS: Via immunohistochemistry, lesional skin of lichen planus patients and healthy skin were analysed concerning the intensity of interferon-asso

In addition to the infestations and bacterial infections reported in part I, the study of entomodermoscopy also involves descriptions of dermoscopic findings of a growing number of viral and fungal infections, among others. In this article, the main clinical situations in viral infections where dermoscopy can be useful will be described, that is in the evaluation of viral warts, molluscum contagiosum, and even in recent scenarios such as the COVID-19 pandemic. As for fungal infections, dermoscopy is particularly important, not only in the evaluation of the skin surface, but also of skin annexe

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a rare chronic fungal infection caused by various dematiaceous fungi. This mycosis is mostly found in middle-aged males in tropical and subtropical countries. Only few cases of CBM in children have been reported. The diagnosis of CBM is often delayed due to the similarities with other dermatological diseases, such as cutaneous tuberculosis, mycetoma, leprosy, viral warts, psoriasis vulgaris, or malignancies. We report a case of an 11-year-old healthy boy having CBM. On his left knee, there were large erythematous plaques and tumors with scaly surfaces, some lesions

The skin barrier function of the female vulva is susceptible to chronic eczema. Currently, the primary treatment for local chronic eczema is topical corticosteroids. However, long-term corticosteroid treatment can further damage the skin barrier, resulting in bacterial or viral infections that complicate the condition. Once chronic eczema is associated with viral warts, medication choices are limited. In this case report, a patient with a ten-year history of chronic vulvar eczema became infected with human papillomavirus and eventually developed multiple warts. After three sessions of photodyn

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus infects and proliferates in skin or mucosal cells to cause warts. Most of the current therapeutic modalities are ablative, act only on treated lesions, and lack a well-defined treatment endpoint. These being blind procedures, recurrence rates are high, owing to the remnant virus. Intralesional immunotherapy plays a significant role, as it potentially acts on treated and distant lesions.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to study and compare the efficacy, safety profile, and recurrence rates of intralesional immunotherapy modalities (vitamin D3; measles, mumps, and rubell

BACKGROUND: Multiple viral warts represent a frustrating challenge for both patients and physicians. Management is difficult, primarily due to recalcitrance to standard therapy and high recurrence rates. Recently, intralesional antigen immunotherapy has shown promising efficacy in the treatment of warts.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to compare efficacy and safety of intralesional PPD versus measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the management of multiple warts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and five patients having multiple warts were randomly divided into group A (PPD), g

Epidermolytic acanthoma is a rare benign lesion that most often presents as a solitary or multiple small papular lesions on the trunk, face, limbs or external male genitalia. Only a small number of cases have been reported occurring on the vulva and clinically and histologically they may mimic and be misdiagnosed as viral warts. We report 2 cases of multiple epidermolytic acanthomas localized to the vulva. Molecular tests (in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction) showed no evidence of human papillomavirus infection and p16 staining was negative. We stress the need for pathologists

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common premalignant skin lesion that can progress to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Microwave therapy is an established cancer treatment and has been used for plantar viral warts.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of microwave as a treatment for AK.
METHODS: Stage I was a dose-setting study, in which seven participants had the dielectric properties of 12 thick and 22 thin AKs assessed for optimization of the microwave dose used for treatment in Stage II. Stage II was a randomized, internally controlled trial evaluating 179

The milky juice of the greater celandine herb has been used in folk medicine and in homeopathy for treatment of viral warts for years. However, classical medicine fails to use properties of celandine herbs in treatment of diseases induced by papilloma viruses. Nevertheless, dermatological outpatient clinics are regularly visited by patients reporting efficacy of milky sap isolated from celandine herb in treatment of their own viral warts. Authors of this report decided to analyze the respective world literature in order to critically evaluate the potential for treatment of viral dermal warts u

Viral warts or verruca are very common skin infections in children. Although benign, lesions can be extensive, painful, bleed, or lead to cosmetic disfigurement. Although spontaneous resolution can occur, parents often bring their children for treatment, especially when they are symptomatic. Many publications have assessed the efficacy and safety of treatment of warts in adults. However, treatment in children can be challenging due to their immune responses and lower threshold for pain. We review the current literature on the methods, efficacy, and side effect profile of common treatment modal

Viral warts are well-defined, hyperkeratotic mucocutaneous lesions caused by human papilloma virus infection, that can occur anywhere on the body. Various medical and surgical modalities are required for treatment of warts as spontaneous regression is rarely seen. Despite the availability of multiple treatment options, warts are often recurrent and resistant to treatment. The effectiveness of autoinoculation in the treatment of multiple or recurrent verruca was evaluated. Consecutive cases with at least five warts or recurrent warts were included. A treatment-free washout period of 1 month was

BACKGROUND: Cryotherapy (freezing by liquid nitrogen) is an effective and widely used method for treatment of common warts. Patients often need multiple sessions at variable intervals. Protocols used by different dermatologists vary in terms of freezing time, the number of cycles, and the intervals between sessions.
AIM: To compare the efficacy (cure rates) and safety (complications, early and late) of two cryotherapy treatment protocols for common viral warts.
METHOD: A prospective observational study was conducted; it involved 80 patients with common warts on the hands and feet who were tr
