Intralesional vitamin D3 versus new topical photodynamic therapy in recalcitrant palmoplanter warts Randomized comparative controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Recalcitrant palmoplanter warts represent a therapeutic challenge. Side effects of local destructive methods necessitates the need for other less morbid modalities. Recently immunotherapy as well as light based devices and lasers have emerged as therapeutic approaches. AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare between the safety and efficacy of intralesional vitamin D3 injection and photodynamic therapy (PDT) using eosin in treatment of recalcitrant palmoplanter warts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospective, randomized, controlled comparative study. Fifty -six patients with recalcitrant palmoplant

Topical cidofovir for the treatment of recalcitrant viral warts and molluscum contagiosum in Jacobsen syndrome.

Jacobsen syndrome is caused by a terminal deletion on the long arm of chromosome 11 and can be associated with immunodeficiency. Patients with Jacobsen syndrome can be predisposed to cutaneous viral infections that are difficult to treat. We report successful use of topical 1% cidofovir as treatment of recalcitrant verruca vulgaris in one patient and molluscum contagiosum in another patient with Jacobsen syndrome. Topical cidofovir appears to be a good treatment option in this cohort and should be considered early for treatment-resistant cutaneous viral infections.

Molluscum Contagiosum on the Sole of the Foot in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Molluscum contagiosum (MC) presents as skin-colored, dome-shaped, umbilicated papules or nodules on the skin and is caused by the MC virus. It predominantly occurs in school-aged children and mainly affects the face, neck, and central regions of the body but, rarely, the soles of feet are affected. Here, we describe the case of a 71-year-old woman with MC on the plantar heel. CASE REPORT A 71-year-old woman presented with a 3-mm, pale, pearly, round, verrucoid lesion along the plantar central aspect of the left heel, present for 1 week. Histopathological evaluation of the excisional

Prolapsed tongue papilloma cured by administration of the traditional Japanese (Kampo) herbal medicine, Keishibukuryogan-ka-yokuinin: A case report.

Squamous papilloma is a benign mass lesion of the oral mucosa. For papillomas of the tongue, surgery is recommended owing to their malignant potential; however, certain complications may be associated with surgery. A traditional Japanese (Kampo) herbal medicine, Keishibukuryogan-ka-yokuinin (KBGY), has been used to treat viral warts and various skin diseases in Japan. Therefore, the effect of KBGY on papillomas is promising. A 49-year-old Japanese man presented with a wart on his tongue that was about 3 months old. He smoked 5 cigarettes per day. He did not drink alcohol. He had no history of

Dermoscopy in Monitoring and Predicting Therapeutic Response in General Dermatology (Non-Tumoral Dermatoses): An Up-To-Date Overview.

Besides the well-known use in supporting the non-invasive diagnosis of non-tumoral dermatoses (general dermatology), dermoscopy has been shown to be a promising tool also in predicting and monitoring therapeutic outcomes of such conditions, with the consequent improvement/optimization of their treatment. In the present paper, we sought to provide an up-to-date overview on the use of dermoscopy in highlighting response predictor factors and evaluating therapeutic results in the field of general dermatology according to the current literature data. Several dermatoses may somehow benefit from suc

Intralesional methotrexate in dermatology: Diverse indications and practical considerations.

Intralesional methotrexate (IL-MTX) is a long-established treatment, which is arguably underutilized by dermatologists. We describe the underlying evidence base and practical considerations for its broad range of cutaneous indications, including in cutaneous oncology (keratoacanthomas, squamous cell carcinomas, lymphomas), inflammatory dermatology (nail psoriasis, plaque psoriasis, pyoderma gangrenosum, cutaneous Crohn's disease, amyloidosis), cutaneous infections (viral warts) and for treatment of filler complications. In certain circumstances, IL-MTX can be more efficacious and less invasive

Topical and systemic retinoids for the treatment of cutaneous viral warts: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cutaneous viral warts (CVW), caused by human papillomavirus, often have a self-limited course. However, some patients experience a recalcitrant disease despite treatment. Retinoids are considered the mainstay of therapy in many dermatologic diseases. Data on their use for viral warts are limited. To systematically review the published evidence on the efficacy and safety of retinoids for the treatment of CVW. A systematic review and meta-analysis of topical or systemic retinoid treatment for CVW was performed in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The primary outcome was clinical response; se

Treatment of Recalcitrant Viral Warts with Combination Therapy of Systemic Acitretin and Diphenylcyclopropenone Immunotherapy.

Viral warts are benign proliferations of the epithelium caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Diverse therapeutic options are available for viral warts, depending on extension and severity of the disease. We report a case of a 19-year-old man who presented with multiple viral warts on hands and feet for 5 years. He was treated at other clinics before visiting our hospital, but there was no improvement. We treated the lesions with a combination therapy of systemic acitretin and diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) immunotherapy for 6 months. A significant improvement was observed during the

Applications of a Standardized Green Tea Catechin Preparation for Viral Warts and Human Papilloma Virus-Related and Unrelated Cancers.

Most cell-based and animal experiments have shown that green tea catechins (GTC) exhibit various health benefits. In human experimental and epidemiological studies, there are conflicting results, and more precise investigations are required. One of the most effective ways to prove beneficial health effects in humans might be clinical intervention studies. Polyphenon®E was developed as a standardized GTC preparation, which was approved by Food and Drug Administration of US in 2006 as a medication to treat genital warts (Veregen® or sinecatechins). Positive efficacy of Polyphenon®E/sinecatechins

Mandibular Fracture Patterns in a Rural Setup: A 7-Year Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: Indian patients who undergo surgical revascularization are relatively younger than their Western counterparts and are predominantly revascularized using off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) technique. They may therefore be at a reduced risk of developing post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of POAF, measure its impact on outcomes, and identify the predictors for POAF in the Indian patients undergoing OPCAB. Besides, the ability of European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) and Society of Thoraci

Local hyperthermia cleared multifarious viral warts in a patient with Cushing's syndrome.

A female Cushing's syndrome patient had been suffering from extensive viral warts for months. She was diagnosed with flat warts, common warts and plantar warts. The plantar warts on her right foot were initially treated using local hyperthermia at 44°C for 30 min according to a defined protocol, followed by treatment targeting a common wart on her left thumb. In response to hyperthermia, the flat warts on her eyelid dissipated within 12 weeks, and when combined with a 1 week administration of imiquimod, the common warts and plantar warts completely disappeared within 8 weeks. There were no sig

Immunomodulatory properties of cimetidine: Its therapeutic potentials for treatment of immune-related diseases.

Histamine exerts potent modulatory impacts on the cells of innate- [including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), natural killer (NK) cells and NKT cells] and adaptive immunity (such as Th1-, Th2-, Th17-, regulatory T-, CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, and B cells) through binding to histamine receptor 2 (H2R). Cimetidine, as an H2R antagonist, reverses the histamine-mediated immunosuppression, as it has powerful stimulatory effects on the effector functions of neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, DCs, NK cells, NKT cells, Th1-, Th2-, Th17-, and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. However,

The SILVER study. Efficacy of topical nitric-zinc complex solution in the treatment of resistant warts: A postmarketing evaluation.

The treatment of cutaneous viral warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is often subject to local recurrence and a long clinical and treatment course. Our aim was to analyze real-life data on the treatment of difficult-to-treat warts from a multicenter postmarketing surveillance assessment on the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of a commercially available nitric-zinc complex solution (NZCS). Dermatologists from 14 Italian centers completed a questionnaire about their clinical experience on treatment of "difficult-to-treat" warts, which included warts in the plantar, periungual

Expanding the applications of microneedles in dermatology.

Since the first patent for microneedles was filed in the 1970s, research on utilising microneedles as a drug delivery system has progressed significantly. In addition to the extensive research on microneedles for improving transdermal drug delivery, there is a growing interest in using these devices to manage dermatological conditions. This review aims to provide the background on microneedles, the clinical benefits, and challenges of the device along with the potential dermatological conditions that may benefit from the application of such a drug delivery system. The first part of the review

Serum retinol-binding protein: a novel biomarker for recalcitrant cutaneous warts.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous viral warts are benign epidermal proliferations caused by human papillomaviruses (HPVs). Despite treatment, a significant proportion of warts fail to resolve, becoming recalcitrant. Vitamin A (retinol) may disrupt the interplay of HPV replication and epithelial cell differentiation, allowing normal tissue to replace warts. Circulating retinol-binding protein (RBP) concentrations highly correlate with retinol levels. AIM: We aimed at evaluation of serum RBP level in patients with recalcitrant cutaneous warts in order to assess its correlation with disease pathogenesis. M
