Pediatric Dermatology for People of Color.

When evaluating pediatric patients of color, it is essential to consider the unique diagnostic and treatment factors that apply to this population. Certain dermatologic conditions are more common in these patients, including postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, pityriasis alba, progressive macular hypomelanosis, tinea capitis, traction alopecia, keloids, hypertrophic scars, pseudofolliculitis barbae, acne keloidalis nuchae, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Furthermore, conditions such as vitiligo are more noticeable in people of color. This can lead to a significantly diminished quality of life, s

Dermatology in black skin.

The vast majority of publications in dermatology refer to lightly pigmented skin, with few addressing the peculiarities of black skin. In addition there is no consensus on what it means to be black in different regions of the world. The lack of knowledge on the subject makes it difficult to recognize and manage dermatoses in this type of skin. This article aims to review the literature on intrinsic characteristics, as well as epidemiological and clinical aspects of the cutaneous manifestations of different dermatoses in black skin. It was found that there are sometimes striking differences, in

Shaving Waivers in the United States Air Force and Their Impact on Promotions of Black/African-American Members.

INTRODUCTION: Regulations of the United States Air Force (USAF) prohibit male members from growing beards. Shaving waivers can be issued to airmen who are not able to shave due to various medical conditions such as pseudofolliculitis barbae, a condition that predominantly affects Blacks/African-Americans. Beard growth has been anecdotally associated with a negative impact on career progression. This study sought to establish if shaving waivers are associated with delays in promotion and, if present, if this association leads to racial bias. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online survey that collect

Review of treatments for pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by follicular and perifollicular papules and pustules primarily affecting the beard and neck area. PFB is a condition that predominantly affects patients with skin of colour. The objective of this paper is to review the epidemiology, pathogenesis and presentation of PFB, and assess the most recent evidence-based treatment options and recommendations for PFB. This is important to increase the quality of care given to target patient populations and to address the prominent disparity in healthcare management of pati

Dermoscopy for the Diagnosis of Creeping Hair Caused by Ingrowing Hair: A Case Report.

Creeping hair is a rare condition characterized by creeping eruption with a black line at the advancing end, mimicking cutaneous larva migrans. The condition is also referred to as cutaneous pili migrans, migrating hair, and embedded hair. A total of 52 cases have been reported since 1957 and most cases were published in English. Herein, we report a case in which creeping hair occurred in the iliac region and review the literature from 1957 to February 2021. A 35-year-old Chinese female presented with a black moving linear eruption that had migrated from the lower abdomen to the iliac region w

Common Dermatologic Conditions in Skin of Color.

Individuals with skin of color represent a diverse population of racial and ethnic backgrounds, including but not limited to Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American or Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino, and Middle Eastern or North African. Dermatologic health disparities exist in part because of systemic racism and are exacerbated by inadequate physician training and a lack of high-quality research on skin diagnoses that disproportionately affect people with skin of color. These conditions, which include postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, keloids, dermat

Treatment and Current Policies on Pseudofolliculitis Barbae in the US Military.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), or ingrown hairs, is a common skin condition of the face and neck caused by shaving in predisposed individuals who have naturally curly hair. It uniquely affects a disproportionate number of US service members with African ancestry who must abide by strict uniform grooming standards across the entire military. The main rationale behind this policy is that a beard can prevent a proper seal when using breathing protection devices such as gas masks or N95 respirators. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and ever-looming overseas conflicts, dermatologists

Ethnic Equity Implications in the Management of Pseudofolliculitis Barbae.

One major issue facing the health care system in the United States is the disparity in health care management of diseases that affect minority patient populations. Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is very common in Black men. It presents as skin-colored to erythematous, follicular or perifollicular papules and pustules predominantly on the neck and chin. The most definitive treatment for PFB is cessation of close shaving. However, many Black men are forced to comply with "clean-shaven" policies in the workforce. For those who are able to obtain medical waivers, there is significant time and cos

New Razor Technology Improves Appearance and Quality of Life in Men With Pseudofolliculitis Barbae.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) consists of ingrown hairs leading to papules, pustules, and discomfort. This prospective, 12-week clinical study aimed to assess the appearance of males with razor bumps and shaving irritation when using a new razor technology with 2 blades separated by a bridge feature (SkinGuard [Procter & Gamble]). The impact on participants' shave-related itching, burning, and stinging severity, as well as quality of life (QOL), also was assessed. In men with PFB, shaving with the test razor at least 5 times per week over a 12-week period improved the appearance and QOL of m

Pseudofolliculitis Barbae in the U.S. Military, a Review.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), also known as ingrown hairs commonly results from adherence to military grooming standards in those who have curly facial hair. Many patients respond to specific grooming techniques or topical medications but severe cases often warrant restrictions on shaving or laser therapy. The treatment of PFB is challenged not only by grooming standards but also evolving readiness requirements. More recently, the Navy discontinued permanent restrictions on shaving because of concerns for poor gas mask fitting. The goal of this review is to outline the history

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) presents as chronic inflammation of the beard area that affect males but also females may affect if have coarse hair. Its treatment can be challenging. Laser-assisted hair removal causes miniaturization of hair shafts which are the principal contributors to inflammation in PFB. Also chemical peeling is used in treatment of PFB. To assess and compare the efficacy and safety of long pulsed Nd:YAG laser vs chemical peeling in the treatment of PFB. Twenty male patients with PFB were divided randomly into two groups. Group A treated by long pulsed Nd: Yag laser and g

Pseudofolliculitis barbae treatment: Efficacy of topical eflornithine, long-pulsed Nd-YAG laser versus their combination.

BACKGROUND: Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is a chronic inflammatory disorder occurring mostly in regions of thick hair growth after shaving. PFB is characterized clinically by multiple painful, pruritic erythematous papules and, less commonly, pustules, nodules, or abscesses. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of topical eflornithine cream only, long-pulsed Nd-YAG laser, versus their combination for PFB management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Overall, 40 male patients with PFB were allocated into 3 treatment groups; Group 1 (n = 12): Treated by topical eflornithine cream twice daily for 16 weeks, Gro

Facial hair shaving behavior and skin problems of shaved areas of males.

Unwanted facial hair is a common problem and requires different grooming regimens or treatments. Shaving beard hair can cause undesirable skin effects, such as irritation, razor burn, razor nick, and pseudofolliculitis barbae. This study explores male behaviors related to shaving facial hair and the consequential effects on the shaved skin. A questionnaire-based, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted on 340 healthy men. Most of the participants were manual shavers. Approximately one-third of the manual shavers prepared their skin for shaving, compared to 13% of the electric shavers.
