Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral infection that primarily affects pediatric patients, sexually active young adults, and immunocompromised individuals of all ages. Clinically, MC presents as firm, rounded, pink, or skin-colored papules with a shiny and umbilicated surface. Microscopic histological findings include a crateriform invagination of the hyperplastic epithelium composed of enlarged keratinocytes containing inclusion bodies known as Henderson-Patterson bodies. In some patients, including immunocompetent children, the morphology of MC lesions can vary. Giant MC lesions can mimic cy

Atopic dermatitis (AD) may be complicated by disseminated molluscum contagiosum virus (MOCV) infection, known as eczema molluscatum (EM), particularly in children. Topical treatments are not always effective, and although modern systemic immunomodulatory therapies for AD, including use in early childhood, are available, their impact on co-occurring MCV infection is not well documented. We present a 4-year-old child with severe EM that was refractory to conventional topical therapy. She was treated with dupilumab (300 mg subcutaneously every four weeks), which led to a rapid resolution of sympt

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral skin infection that poses significant physical and psychosocial burdens, particularly in pediatric and immunocompromised populations. Despite the availability of various treatment options, comparative efficacy and safety data remain limited. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, evaluates and compares the efficacy, safety, recurrence, and adverse effects of MC treatments. A total of 89 studies encompassing 12,955 participants were analyzed. Curettage, potassium hydroxide (KOH), autoinoculation, and podophyllotoxin demonstr

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) is a benign lymphatic malformation resulting from dilated lymphatic vessels in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It commonly affects the chest, tongue, axilla, and oral cavity. Vulvar involvement is exceptionally rare.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 45-year-old multiparous female with a 4-year history of vulvar lesions along with discharge. There was no history of associated burning, pain, or itching. She underwent abdominal hysterectomy 10 months back (it was after the appearance of vulvar lesions). Local examination revealed grouped vesicle

Herein, we report on the first identification of a human case of Molluscum contagiosum virus (MOCV) in Senegal. In 2024, a male child living in Diamniadio, Dakar region, with no history of travel, tested positive for MOCV. The aetiology was identified using metagenomic sequencing in the framework of the ongoing preparedness activities for the 2024 mpox public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). Given the overlapping clinical features of MOCV infection and mpox, further research on MOCV is warranted in the West African region, particularly in the current context of high mpox circ

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Molluscum contagiosum affects up to 11.5% of children, yet optimal treatment remains uncertain. Previous systematic reviews included mixed adult/pediatric populations, limiting applicability to children. We performed the first pediatric-specific network meta-analysis comparing molluscum contagiosum treatment efficacy and safety.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science through December 2025 for controlled trials evaluating molluscum contagiosum treatments in children. Two reviewers independently selected studies, extracted data, and ass

Non-native rodents serve as bridges between anthropogenic and natural landscapes. They have expanded across the planet alongside humans while bringing competition, predation, and pathogens, such as poxviruses, to naïve ecosystems. Although rodents serve as reservoirs for multiple zoonotic poxviruses, limited research has focused on rodents for identification of unknown poxviruses. Here, we characterized a divergent metagenome-assembled poxvirus, madamurpox virus, from the oral swab of a black rat in southeastern Madagascar. While madamurpox virus shares a phylogenetic relationship with human-i

BACKGROUND: Molluscum contagiosum (MC), caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, is a common viral skin infection in children. MC may persist for months to years and can substantially impair the quality of life for affected children and their families through discomfort, pruritus, cosmetic concerns, social stigma, and household transmission. Newer US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved therapies have demonstrated patient-acceptable clearance rates, providing clinicians with additional options to treat pediatric MC. The paper summarized literature on MC in childhood and provided evide

Cantharidin (CTD), an anhydride-containing natural product from blister beetles, exhibits potent pharmacological activities in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum and tumors. However, CTD exposure induces multi-organ damage, among which CTD-triggered myocardial cell necrosis and electrophysiological abnormalities represent severe adverse reactions and are the primary causes of fatality. Our recent work revealed that the anhydride moiety of CTD possesses reactivity and can covalently modify proteins via lysine residues. This study investigated the mechanistic role of this covalent modificati

BACKGROUND: Patients struggle to comprehend dermatopathology reports. As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become more accessible, patients may use them to interpret reports; however, optimal approaches remain unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate whether prompt-engineered AI simplification of dermatopathology reports improves factualness, completeness, and reduces potential harm compared to basic AI usage.
METHODS: Survey-based study (January-April 2025) of 52 US dermatology and dermatopathology professionals (70.3% response rate). Six fictitious dermatopathology reports were simplified using: (

This study aimed to compare depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and health-related quality of life between children with molluscum contagiosum and healthy controls and to examine whether lesion number and anatomical localization were associated with these outcomes. This prospectively conducted cross-sectional study included 72 children with molluscum contagiosum and 80 age- and sex-matched healthy controls aged 6-12 years. Depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and health-related quality of life were assessed using validated pediatric instruments. Psychological outcomes were also compared a

Molluscum contagiosum and human papillomavirus (HPV) are very common cutaneous infections with worldwide distribution, yet treatment options remain limited. Traditional therapies are invasive and have a high rate of recurrence, and newer topical agents available are costly. Here I discuss evidence supporting the hypothesis that the aluminum-based salts, utilized in the antiperspirant industry since the early 1900s, could have a therapeutic effect on skin lesions due to molluscum contagiosum, HPV and possibly other viruses. Clinical trials in this area are needed.

Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) is a human-specific poxvirus responsible for a common contagious skin infection, yet no licensed prophylactic vaccine is available. Therefore, this study aimed to identify potential vaccine candidates against MCV using integrated reverse vaccinology and immunoinformatics approach. Candidate proteins involved in immune evasion, viral entry, and virion assembly were assessed for physicochemical properties, transmembrane topology, antigenicity, allergenicity, and toxicity. Linear B-cell, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL), and helper T-lymphocyte (HTL) epitopes were pr

Transposable elements mobilize within and occasionally between genomes, including from host to virus. We identified two insertions of the human BC200 noncoding RNA gene in the poxvirus molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), which were likely acquired through long interspersed nuclear element 1 (LINE-1 or L1)-mediated retrotransposition during modern human history. Although BC200 was co-opted approximately 40 million years ago to regulate neuronal translation, we show that it never lost its mobilization capacity. Rather, BC200 functioned as a "master" source of L1-mediated germline retrotranspositi
