Skin conditions: common skin rashes in infants.

Infants exhibit many skin rashes. Erythema toxicum neonatorum presents as erythematous macules, papules, and pustules on the face, trunk, and extremities; it typically resolves spontaneously within 1 week. Neonatal acne presents as comedones or erythematous papules on the face, scalp, chest, and back. Infantile acne is similar but starts after the neonatal period. Both conditions typically resolve spontaneously; failure to resolve within 1 year warrants evaluation for androgen excess. Neonatal cephalic pustulosis is an acne variant caused by hypersensitivity to Malassezia furfur. It is typical

Acral milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis in a child with down syndrome: report of a case, review of the literature, and description of dermoscopic findings.

Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC) is a rare dermopathy, usually occurring in children with Down syndrome. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl with Down syndrome who presented with histologically verified MICC, briefly review the literature on MICC, discuss the differential diagnosis, and describe the use of dermoscopy in the evaluation of lesions, which we believe has never been published previously with this entity.

Fox-Fordyce disease: response to adapalene 0.1%.

The Fox-Fordyce disease is a rare inflammatory dermatosis that affects mainly young women and is characterized by multiple follicular papules, skin color or brownish, very itchy, localized in areas rich in apocrine glands. Histopathology shows focal spongiosis of the upper infundibulum with fibrosis and perifollicular lymphohistiocytic infiltrate. The diagnosis is based on clinical and histopathological examination. Many treatment options have been described; however none of them is excellent. We chose the topic adapalene 0.1% and a satisfactory improvement of the signs and symptoms of the dis

Miliarial-type perifollicular B-cell pseudolymphoma (lymphocytoma cutis): a misleading eruption in two women.

Disseminated miliarial-type lymphocytoma cutis is a rare clinicopathologic subtype of lymphocytoma, characterized by numerous translucent micropapules and located on the head and neck. We describe here the clinical, histological and immunological features of miliarial-type perifollicular B-cell pseudolymphoma in two women aged 32 and 49 years presenting with numerous 1-2 mm translucent papules on the head and neck. Microscopic examination revealed features typical of a miniature lymphocytoma cutis with a superficial nodular infiltrate housing small well-circumscribed germinal centers containin

Congenital miliaria crystallina - A diagnostic dilemma.

Miliaria crystallina is a transient, superficial obstruction of eccrine sweat ducts resulting in rapidly evolving noninflammatory vesicles. The disease is observed frequently in hot, humid, tropical climates and in the neonatal period, most likely due to lack of maturation of the sweat duct during the first few days following birth. It is rarely present at delivery and remains a diagnostic dilemma for the neonatologists. We report a rare case of "Congenital miliaria crystallina" that was present at birth.

Histopathology attributes of Fox-Fordyce disease.

BACKGROUND: Fox-Fordyce disease is a rare chronic papular condition with a very characteristic clinical presentation but a nonspecific histopathology. Its traditionally described histopathologic features have been criticized as variable and indistinct. Recently, a perifollicular infiltrate of histiocytes with foamy cytoplasm has been described as a consistent and reliable diagnostic finding. METHODS: To evaluate the traditional and most recently described histopathologic and immunohistochemical attributes of Fox-Fordyce disease, we performed a computerized search of specimens in two dermatopa

Widespread miliaria crystallina in a newborn with hypernatremic dehydration.

Miliaria, which is extravasation of sweat into the epidermis and dermis due to sweat duct obstruction, is a commonly seen dermatologic disorder in newborns. We present a case of extensive, widespread miliaria crystallina that developed in a newborn during treatment of severe hypernatremic dehydration. A possible mechanism could be the destruction of sweat ducts with excretion of sweat with high levels of sodium.

Fox-Fordyce disease.

Fox-Fordyce disease (FFD) is a rare inflammatory disorder that affects the apocrine sweat glands. Clinically, lesions are equidistant, smooth, uniform, firm, folliculocentric papules, which can range in color from flesh-colored to red-brown to slightly yellow. Whereas the axillae are most commonly involved, FFD also can involve the anogenital and periareolar areas, lips, umbilicus, sternum, perineum, and upper medial aspects of the thighs. The underlying etiology of FFD remains unclear although epidemiologic data support a hormonal component because women are more commonly affected than men. M

Granulomatous variant of giant centrifugal miliaria profunda.

Two infants presented with multiple asymptomatic papules and geographic and annular plaques over the extensor aspect of the upper and lower extremities and trunk. Skin biopsy of both lesions showed plugged and hyperplastic dilated acrosryingia and deep dermal ducts, along with granulomatous inflammatory reaction. These lesions showed self-healing with complete resolution. A previous report described similar clinical and histopathologic features and labeled it giant centrifugal miliaria profunda. Because of the large granulomatous plaques and deep infiltrate, we propose that it was a granulomat
