Fox-Fordyce disease following axillary laser hair removal.

BACKGROUND: Fox-Fordyce disease (FFD) is a relatively rare entity with a typical clinical presentation. Numerous studies have described unifying histopathological features of FFD, which together suggest a defect in the follicular infundibulum resulting in follicular dilation with keratin plugging, subsequent apocrine duct obstruction, and apocrine gland dilation, with eventual extravasation of the apocrine secretions as the primary histopathogenic events in the evolution of the disease. OBSERVATIONS: We describe a case of FFD that developed in a 41-year-old woman 3 months after completing a s

New horizons for cutaneous microbiology: the role of biofilms in dermatological disease.

Human skin is colonized by bacteria. The development of new genomic microbiological techniques has revealed that the bacterial ecology of human skin is far more complex than previously imagined and includes many fastidious or noncultivable bacterial species which are found on both normal and diseased skin. In nature, the predominant bacterial phenotype on epithelial surfaces is that of organisms organized within a biofilm. This contrasts with the widely held belief that bacteria are planktonic, i.e. free-floating single cells. Biofilms are sessile bacterial communities encased in an extracellu

Congenital miliaria crystallina in a term neonate born to a mother with chorioamnionitis.

Miliaria crystallina (MC) is a self-limiting, superficial obstruction of the eccrine sweat ducts with subsequent extravasation of sweat, resulting in rapidly surfacing, tiny, clear, noninflammatory vesicles. The disease is seen frequently in hot, humid, tropical climates and in the neonatal period, but congenital occurrence is rare. We report a case of congenital MC in a baby born to a mother with chorioamnionitis.

Incidence of Vesicobullous and Erosive Disorders of Neonates: Where and How Much to Worry?

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the incidence of dermatoses in neonates, stress the importance of simple noninvasive diagnostic procedures with perspective to actual need of active intervention. METHODS: Forty four neonates with vesicobullous lesions in Departments of Dermatology and Pediatrics were evaluated with respect to diagnosis, required treatments and follow ups. RESULTS: Of the total 44 neonates, 29 were boys and 15 girls. Low birth weight (weight at birth less than 2,500 g as per WHO criteria) was seen in 19 neonates. Of the infectious dermatoses, most common were pyodermas. Four cases (9%)

Miliaria-rash after neutropenic fever and induction chemotherapy for acute myelogenous leukemia.

Miliaria is a disorder of the eccrine sweat glands which occurs in conditions of increased heat and humidity. It can be associated with persistent febrile states as well as with certain drugs. We presented a 40 year-old female with myelodysplastic syndrome and progression to acute myelogenous leukemia who was admitted to the hospital for chemotherapy induction. The patient was treated with idarubicin and cytarabine. She became pancytopenic and developed neutropenic fever and was started on vancomycin and cefepime, but was persistently febrile with night sweats. Five days into her fevers, she d

Patients presenting with miliaria while wearing flame resistant clothing in high ambient temperatures: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Clothing can be a cause of occupational dermatitis. Frequent causes of clothing-related dermatological problems can be the fabric itself and/or chemical additives used in the laundering process, friction from certain fabrics excessively rubbing the skin, or heat retention from perspiration-soaked clothing in hot working environments. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first reported cases of miliaria rubra associated with prolonged use of flame resistant clothing in the medical literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report 18 cases (14 men and 4 women, with an age range of 1

Miliaria rubra and thrombocytosis in pseudohypoaldosteronism: case report.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA1) is a disease involving a state of renal tubular unresponsiveness to the action of aldosterone and characterized by excessive salt loss in the urine, hyperkalemia, and metabolic acidosis. In kidney, PHA1 may occur primarily by mutations in the subunits of the sodium channel or in the mineralocorticoid receptors, and secondarily by several renal disorders. Miliaria rubra and thrombocytosis are reported in a 6-month-old girl with PHA1. In patients with PHA1, miliaria rubra-like cutaneous eruptions are suggested to occur due to obstruction of eccrine sweat gla

Egg phenotype differentiation in sympatric cuckoo Cuculus canorus gentes.

The brood parasitic common cuckoo Cuculus canorus consists of gentes, which typically parasitize only a single host species whose eggs they often mimic. Where multiple cuckoo gentes co-exist in sympatry, we may expect variable but generally poorer mimicry because of host switches or inter-gens gene flow via males if these also contribute to egg phenotypes. Here, we investigated egg trait differentiation and mimicry in three cuckoo gentes parasitizing great reed warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus, marsh warblers Acrocephalus palustris and corn buntings Miliaria calandra breeding in close sympat

Seasonal variation in pediatric dermatoses.

INTRODUCTION: The under-five population is a unique and vulnerable component of our society that always demands special attention. AIMS: Our present work aimed to study the seasonal variation, age-wise variation and distribution of lesions of common dermatoses of this age group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We clinically studied all fresh cases attending the skin OPD of our hospital for one month each from summer, rainy season and winter. Total number of patients was 879. RESULTS: The top six skin diseases in our study were impetigo, miliaria, scabies, furunculosis, seborrheic dermatitis and papu

Fox-Fordyce disease exacerbated by hyperhidrosis.

Fox-Fordyce disease is an uncommon disorder primarily affecting postpubertal females. It is characterized by intensely pruritic, papular eruptions in apocrine-gland bearing regions. Rarity and scant literature have resulted in a lack of definitive treatment options or pathognomonic diagnostic indicators. We report a 16-year-old boy with typical findings of Fox-Fordyce disease including numerous, grouped, rounded (1-3 mm), skin-colored papules confined to the axillary and periareolar areas, bilaterally. These lesions started before puberty, and were exacerbated by hyperhidrosis.

Clinical effects of topical pimecrolimus in a patient with Fox-Fordyce disease.

Fox-Fordyce disease (FFD) is characterized by a pruritic eruption of skin-coloured or yellowish papules in areas rich in apocrine glands. The histology comprises dilatation of follicular infundibula with hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, and spongiosis of the infundibular epithelium with perifollicular infiltration of lymphocytes and foamy histiocytes. We treated a 12-year-old girl with FFD with topical pimecrolimus for 12 weeks, this resulted in a complete clearance of lesions. After the therapy, the patient was followed for an additional 19 months without signs of relapse. The effects of pimecroli

[Basan's syndrome: Congenital absence of dermatoglyphs and milia].

BACKGROUND: White micropapules are uncommon on the face newborns and are mainly due to sebaceous hyperplasia, or more rarely to milia. In some cases they may result from milia and profuse milia suggest rare diseases. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a newborn presenting with profuse congenital milia on the face that resolved spontaneously within a few months. DISCUSSION: This eruption revealed Basan's syndrome, a rare, autosomal dominant inherited dermatosis described as the association of profuse facial milia, acral bullae, absence of dermatoglyphs, and palmoplantar hypohydrosis.
