We aimed to analyze the clinical data of 10 patients (6 male and 4 female) with Fabry disease (FD). The mean age of the patients was (28.80±9.27) years. Seven patients had classical FD and three had delayed onset FD. Among the 10 patients, six had skin involvement and cutaneous angiokeratoma; five had hypohidrosis or anhidrosis; nine had intermittent neuralgia; and three had supraorbital ridge protrusion, forehead bulge, and lip thickening. Five patients had proteinuria, including one with chronic kidney disease stage 3 and one with chronic kidney disease stage 5. Cardiac involvement occurred

Dizziness is one of the most common complaints encountered in the outpatient clinic, which is difficult to diagnose, especially in older patients because of the multifactorial nature of the disease. Although not commonly recognised, anhidrosis can also cause dizziness. We report a case of a woman in her 70s who presented with long-term recurrent dizziness. She had a history of frequent hospitalisations for heatstroke. Physical examination revealed markedly less sweating in the left axilla and soles than in the right. Minol test revealed that most of the left side of her body, including the face

Although warmth is a key sign of inflammatory skin lesions, an objective assessment and follow-up of the temperature changes are rarely done in dermatology. The recent availability of accurate, sensitive and cost-effective thermography devices has made the implementation of thermography in clinical settings feasible. The aim of this scoping review is to summarize the evidence around the value and pitfalls of infrared thermography (IRT) when used in the dermatology clinic. A systematic literature search was done for original articles using IRT in skin disorders. The results concerning the poten

We aimed to describe the clinical features of patients with pure autonomic failure (PAF) preceding phenoconversion that could be useful as predictive markers for advancing α-synuclein-associated neurodegeneration of the brain. Patients diagnosed with PAF were evaluated at eight centres (seven US-based and one European) and enrolled in a longitudinal observational cohort study (NCT01799915). Subjects underwent detailed assessments of motor, sleep, olfactory, cognitive and autonomic function and were followed prospectively to determine whether they developed parkinsonism or dementia for up to 10

Horner's syndrome is a rare condition that results when there is an interruption of the sympathetic fibers that run from the stellate ganglion to the eye. The classic triad of Horner's syndrome includes unilateral ptosis, miosis, and anhidrosis. Spontaneous pneumothorax is a rare condition that occurs when there is a sudden collapsed lung without any direct cause. A few cases have been reported of spontaneous pneumothorax associated with iatrogenic Horner's syndrome. A chest thoracostomy is a procedure that can lead to iatrogenic Horner's syndrome. Here, we present the case of a 25-year-old ma

BACKGROUND: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations of the NTRK1 gene, affecting the autonomic and sensory nervous system. Clinical manifestation is varied and includes recurrent fever, pain insensitivity, anhidrosis, self-mutilating behavior, and intellectual disability.
METHODS: Clinical and genetic features were assessed in two males and one female with genetically confirmed CIPA using exome or genome sequencing.
RESULTS: CIPA symptoms including recurrent fever, pain insensitivity, and a

A 22-month-old girl of consanguineous parents was admitted with a high-grade fever. She was found to have insensitivity to painful stimuli and an absence of perspiration. She also displayed self-mutilating behaviour and was insensitive to cold/hot water on her body. On examination, there was loss of the tip of the tongue, missing teeth, generalised xerosis, and several ulcers at sites of minor trauma. She also had dysplastic nails and digital ulcers. Sensory examination demonstrated a complete lack of awareness of pain and temperature, vibration and fine touch were intact and lacrimation was n

BACKGROUND: Harlequin syndrome is a rare autonomic condition consisting of unilateral facial flushing and sweating induced by heat, emotion or physical activity. The affected side presents anhidrosis and midline facial pallor due to denervation of the sympathetic fibers.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This case describes a patient who reported right-side redness of the face associated with hyperhidrosis during physical activity. She had two previous major motor vehicle accidents. The patient demonstrated difficulties in the visual accommodation of the left eye, but cranial nerve assessment was unremarkabl

BACKGROUND: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA, OMIM #256800), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type Ⅳ (HSAN-IV), is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by recurrent episodic fevers, anhidrosis, insensitivity to noxious stimuli, self-mutilating behavior and intellectual disability. CIPA can be caused by the variants in NTRK1 gene, which encodes a high-affinity tyrosine kinase receptor for nerve growth factor. To ascertain the hereditary cause of a patient with CIPA accompanied by the additional symptoms of mild growth retardation, pron

Pathogenic variations in the NTRK1 can cause congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), a rare autosomal recessive inherited neuropathy. The precise diagnosis of CIPA relies on the identification of pathogenic genotypes. Therefore, it is essential to expand the NTRK1 variation spectrum and improve molecular diagnosis methods. In this study, 74 probands with typical manifestations of CIPA but unknown genotypes were recruited. A comprehensive molecular genetic analysis was performed to identify variations in the NTRK1 , using techniques including Sanger and next-generation sequenci

BACKGROUND: Recently, the incidence of achalasia has been increasing, but its cause remains unknown. This study aimed to examine the initial symptoms and the course of symptoms and to find new insights into the cause and course of the disease.
METHODS: Altogether, 136 patients diagnosed with achalasia by high-resolution manometry (HRM) were enrolled. Questionnaires and chart reviews were conducted to investigate the initial symptoms, time from onset to diagnosis, and comorbidities, as well as the relationship between HRM results, time to diagnosis, and symptom severity.
RESULTS: In total, 67

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), often referred to as Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome, is an uncommon inherited genetic disorder characterized by irregularities in structures derived from the ectoderm, such as skin, hair, nails, teeth, and sweat glands. Common manifestations include thin hair, absent teeth (hypodontia) often pointed in shape, and diminished ability to sweat (hypohidrosis). Changes in the ectodysplasin A (EDA) gene are associated with the development of HED. Addressing this condition requires an integrated, interdisciplinary strategy to ensure the best possible support

This article describes the main visual electrodiagnostic tests relevant to neuro-ophthalmology practice, including the visual evoked potential (VEP), and the full-field, pattern and multifocal electroretinograms (ffERG; PERG; mfERG). The principles of electrophysiological interpretation are illustrated with reference to acquired and inherited optic neuropathies, and retinal disorders that may masquerade as optic neuropathy, including ffERG and PERG findings in cone and macular dystrophies, paraneoplastic and vascular retinopathies. Complementary VEP and PERG recordings are illustrated in demye

PURPOSE: Prior studies reported evidence of autonomic involvement in motor neuron disease and suggested more severe dysfunction in upper motor neuron predominant syndromes. Hence, we sought to characterize autonomic impairment in primary lateral sclerosis.
METHODS: Neurological evaluations, thermoregulatory sweat tests, and autonomic reflex screens were analyzed retrospectively in 34 primary lateral sclerosis patients (28 definite and 6 probable). Patients with other potential causes of autonomic failure and patients with autonomic testing results compromised by artifact were excluded.

Athletes with tetraplegia may experience marked hyperthermia while exercising under environmental heat stress due to their limited ability to dissipate heat through evaporative means. This study investigated the effectiveness of two external cooling strategies (i.e., spraying water onto the body surface or using a cooling vest) on physiological and perceptual variables in tetraplegic athletes during and after an aerobic exercise session in a hot environment. Nine male wheelchair rugby players performed an incremental test to determine their maximum aerobic power output. After that, they were s

INTRODUCTION: Pain perception, far from being a pathological mechanism, is a crucial protective stimulus to prevent additional injuries. Any disturbance in this complex system poses significant risks to individuals, affecting their quality of life and even their survival.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to explore congenital insensitivity to pain, an extremely rare genetic disorder with an autosomal recessive pattern that results in the inability to perceive pain. We will focus on the well-known subtype, congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA). Our research seeks to update existin

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic disorder that influences structures of ectodermal origin, such as teeth, hair, and sweat glands. Compared with autosomal recessive and dominant modes of inheritance, the X-linked HED (XLHED) characterized by Hypodontia/Oligodontia teeth, Absent/sparse hair, Anhidrosis/hypohidrosis, and characteristic facial features, is the most frequent and its primary cause is the mutation of ectodysplasin A (EDA) gene. This research aimed to expound the clinical and molecular features of a Chinese male with XLHED and to summarize and compare
