Empathy, expertise, and expeditious communication: identifying how people with hidradenitis suppurativa experience outpatient palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory condition that significantly impacts quality of life across physical, emotional, and social domains. Palliative care (PC) is specialized care that offers a holistic approach to managing serious illnesses by addressing the multiple dimensions of suffering, yet individuals with chronic dermatologic conditions like HS rarely receive PC. Identifying how individuals with HS experience PC, a medical specialty with an explicit focus on addressing wellbeing holistically, may offer valuable insights for improving broader HS care. OBJE

Hidradenitis Suppurativa Preclinical Studies: Models and Results.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a solely human disease for which-unlike for other inflammatory dermatoses-applied animal models are not available. In order to study skin cell immunology under conditions which approximate the in vivo functions, maintenance of structural tissue integrity in experimental models is essential. Consequently, several ex vivo human models using lesional, perilesional hidradenitis suppurativa and control healthy skin, have been described, which claim to represent fast and relatively simple methods to investigate the pathophysiology of hidradenitis suppurativa and to precli

The effects of GLP-1RA on inflammatory skin diseases: A comprehensive review.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) are commonly used as treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. GLP-1RA have been found to be valuable therapeutic approaches not only for glucose control, but also for weight loss and cardiovascular risk reduction. It has also been established that GLP-1RA have immunological and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this article was to comprehensively review the literature and to collect, analyse and quantitatively resynthesize evidence on the possible effects of GLP-1RA on inflammatory skin diseases. Through body weight reduction a

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status and New Hidradenitis Suppurativa Diagnoses in a Single Health System.

IMPORTANCE: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Risk factors for developing HS (eg smoking and obesity) are influenced by social drivers of health at the neighborhood level. However, the association of neighborhood-level socioeconomic status (nSES) and HS has not been adequately assessed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of nSES with new HS diagnoses among dermatology patients within a single health system. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional study of patients of the dermatology clinics at the University of California San Fr

Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma (MAC) and Eccrine Cutaneous Mixed Tumor (ECMT): 2 Cases of Rare HPV-independent Vulvar Cutaneous Adnexal Tumors.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) and eccrine cutaneous mixed tumor (ECMT) are both cutaneous adnexal tumors that may occur in the vulvar region, but are very rare at this site. Consequently, they may not enter the differential diagnosis of vulvar lesions for gynecologic pathologists in a subspecialized practice setting. Here we report a case of MAC and a case of ECMT recently diagnosed at our institution and underscore key histologic and immunophenotypic features of each lesion that can assist in their correct identification. Both MAC and ECMT have a tubular to corded pattern of lesional ce

Differentiating the Role of Inflammation in Hidradenitis Suppurativa from that in other Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by nodules, abscesses, and sinus tunnels, primarily in intertriginous areas. Symptoms of HS are associated with reduced psychosocial health and physical function. HS shares some pathogenic, cellular, and molecular features with other inflammatory skin diseases, highlighting its heterogeneity and complexity. This heterogeneity in disease presentation may contribute to the diagnosis delay observed with HS. The primary objective of this review is to highlight the initiating events, inflammatory signature, molecula

Clinicopathological comparison of eccrine poroma and porocarcinoma: Ki-67 index is not a decisive factor.

BACKGROUND: Eccrine poroma (EP) and porocarcinoma (EPC) arise from the intraepidermal part of the sweat gland. Clinically they resemble each other and cannot be distinguished without histopathological examination. EPC has been described as aggressive; however, the Ki-67 index is scarcely reported. The aim of this study was to compare clinicopathological factors between EP and EPC with special interest in Ki-67 index. METHODS AND FINDINGS: 50 EP and 22 EPC samples with clinical data from 48 EP and 21 EPC patients were collected from the Finnish Biobanks. We performed immunohistochemistry using

Mitigating complications rate in parotid gland tumor surgery by reconstruction technique with SurgiMend®: a retrospective, single-center, observational study on 300 consecutive patients.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors have an incidence of 1 out of 100,000 people every year, representing 2-4 % of the head and neck tumors. Consensually, radical surgery is the choice in parotid tumors. Despite improvements in surgical and anatomy-preserving strategies, several complications exist in this surgery. Frey Syndrome is caused by an aberrant regeneration of parasympathetic nerve fibers of the auriculotemporal nerve after parotidectomy. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to compare the surgical complication rate differences between patients undergone parotid gland tumor su

Bilateral Asymptomatic Erythematous Plaques on Soles in an Adult Woman.

A 72-year-old healthy woman presented with bilateral asymptomatic erythematous plaques on her soles, which had persisted for 20 years. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of eccrine syringofibroadenoma (ESFA), a rare eccrine cutaneous tumor. It typically appears as slow-growing nodules or plaques, often misdiagnosed due to its rarity. Although generally benign, ESFA requires accurate diagnosis to distinguish it from other entities and to monitor for potential malignant transformation. This case highlights the diagnostic and clinical challenges associated with ESFA and emphasizes

Bulk and single-cell RNA-sequencing analyses revealed potential key genes and the role of CCL19/CCL21-CCR7 axis in hidradenitis suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder, affecting the pilosebaceous unit in apocrine gland-rich areas, characterized by painful nodules, abscesses and draining tunnels. The underlying molecular and immunological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify key gene expression patterns, hub genes, and analyze the potential role of the CCL19/CCL21-CCR7 axis in HS lesions and peripheral blood using bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing analyses. By employing an integrative approach that included three machine learning methods and subsequent valida

The Versatile Applications of Triple-Wavelength Diode Laser (810, 940, and 1060 nm) in Aesthetic Treatments, Follicular Disorders, and Chronic Inflammatory Conditions in the Asian Population: Case Report Collection.

BACKGROUND: Single-wavelength lasers (755 or 810 nm) are widely used to remove unwanted hair. Recently, combined-wavelength diode lasers have been introduced to improve the safety of darker skin types, owing to their varying absorption spectra and penetration depths. However, their application beyond hair removal remains unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a high-power triple-wavelength diode laser (810, 940, and 1060 nm) in treating hirsutism, inflammatory follicular disorders, and aesthetic concerns such as hairline enhancement in darker skin types. A link between smoking behaviors and the risk of hidradenitis suppurativa in diabetic patients.

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition characterized by painful, recurrent abscesses and tunnels under the skin. It is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors. Smoking, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and other metabolic disorders have been identified as risk factors for HS, potentially exacerbating the severity and progression of the condition. Given the higher prevalence of HS in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), understanding modifiable risk factors such as smoking is crucial for improving

Methylation analysis as a diagnostic tool for sweat gland tumours classification with emphasis on the distinction between digital papillary adenocarcinoma and mimickers.

AIMS: Digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA) is a rare sweat gland carcinoma arising on acral sites. The main differential diagnosis included tubular adenoma, hidradenoma, poroid hidradenoma, and mixed tumours, distinction between DPA and these mimickers being crucial for therapeutic management. Recently, HPV42 was identified as the main oncogenic driver of most DPA. Controversially, a few sweat gland tumour cases diagnosed as "DPA" but lacking the HPV42 genome and harbouring instead a BRAFV600E mutation, a genetic hallmark of tubular adenomas, have been recently described. Methylation analysi
