One hundred patients, workers from a meat packing plant that wear rubber boots while working, were studied. Besides the well known allergic manifestations to rubber or other plastic materials used in footwear other pathologic findings included mycotic and bacterial lesions formed by plantar hyperhidrosis with the development of bromhidrosis and plantar xanthokeratoderma. These occupational dermatoses are a medical problem, but also have social and economical implications.

Fungal infections of the feet are very common in some professions. This has been particularly studied in coal mine workers up to 50 p. 100 of whom were found to have dermatophytosis of the feet. Tubular apocrine adenoma is a rare, benign apocrine tumour of the skin, histologically distinct from other epithelial proliferations, showing apocrine differentiation. A new case of this uncommon lesion is reported herein and a review of the literature concerning this tumour is made.

Gross cystic disease fluid is a pathologic secretion from breast composed of several glycoproteins, including a unique 15,000-dalton monomer protein, GCDFP-15. By the immunoperoxidase technique, GCDFP-15 was localized in the apocrine metaplastic epithelium lining breast cysts and in apocrine glands in the axilla, vulva, eyelid, and ear canal. In normal breast tissue, a few individual epithelial cells within lobules and small ducts were focally positive for GCDFP-15. Fourteen of 30 breast carcinomas stained positively for GCDFP-15. Of 16 carcinomas with apocrine features, 12 stained positively.

A 61-year old man presented with a five-year history of a swelling initially developing in his right lower lid that progressed to involve the lateral canthal skin and eventually the upper lid and anterior orbit. The generic term 'reflex sympathetic dystrophy' describes a clinical syndrome which sometimes develops after traumata at the extremities with lesions of nerves or --more rarely--after other events. Hidradenitis suppurativa is an infrequent inflammatory process that begins as an infection in the apocrine sweat glands. From an initial focus, the infection spreads to involve other tissues of the skin and adjacent structures. When inadequately treated or neglected, the disease becomes chronic with suppuration, sinus formation, invasion of adjacent organs, and occasional malignant degeneration. Skin biopsies from 20 patients with indeterminate leprosy were studied histopathologically. The most common clinical manifestation of the disease was a hypopigmented macule. In most cases, 5% to 10% of the dermis was occupied by the infiltrate. We describe our experience in the use of a Silastic foam dressing in 17 patients undergoing radical excision of hidradenitis suppurativa whose wounds were allowed to heal by granulation. Axillary excisions were carried out in 9 patients and perineal excisions in 8 patients. The technique permits adequate excision of the disease and results in a cosmetically acceptable scar, superior to that obtained by skin grafting and with little limitation of movement.
