A cross-sectional study is reported in which 53 patients with Holmes-Adie syndrome have been subjected to a battery of tests of autonomic nervous function referable to the cardiovascular system, to two objective tests of sweating function, and to subjective assessment of sweating by application of quinizarin powder followed by body heating. CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old woman had a bluish tumor medially on the margin of the left upper eyelid. Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva was presumed; the lesion was excised and submitted for routine histopathologic examination. There are no signs of recurrence or metastatic disease after follow-up for 1 year.

The human genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by defective epithelial Cl- conductance (GCl). To distinguish the CF-affected GCl from other Cl- channels, we have studied the properties of GCl in normal and CF cells grown from explanted reabsorptive sweat ducts (RD). The cultured cells from normal subjects retained some of the typical duct cell properties. Tissues from normal human skin and various skin diseases were studied with the immunoperoxidase technique using an antibody to adult T-cell leukemia-derived factor (ADF), a homologue of human thioredoxin. Electrical impedance of the auricular skin was measured in experimental peritonitis rats. Constant voltage pulses (10ms, 4V) were applied to the skin, then the impedance was estimated. Low impedance points were gradually increased after the operation for 7-14 days then they returned to the control level. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It may occur anywhere in skin containing apocrine sweat glands, but it most often affects the skin of the axilla and the inguinoperineal region. HS of the perineal region is frequently misdiagnosed as other inflammatory conditions, resulting in inappropriate treatment. The best treatment is excision of all the affected skin and subcutaneous tissue. We describe 3 patients with extensive HS and the results of their treatment.

The cellular localization of immunoreactive tissue kallikrein and kininogen was studied in normal and psoriatic human skin. Immunoreactivity to both enzyme and substrate was observed in secretory granules of the dark cells in the secretory fundus (acinus) of the sweat glands. Double immunostaining revealed a segmental distribution of the two antigens. Each acinar section contained either tissue kallikrein or kininogen. A case of apocrine adenocarcinoma arising in the bilateral axillae is reported. To encounter an apocrine carcinoma of the breast is very rare. We have experienced, however, 10 cases of an apocrine carcinoma (0.65%) among 1541 primary breast carcinoma cases. The mean age of the patients was 58.1 years, and the tumor size on palpation ranged from 1.1 to 6.0 cm (mean 3.5 cm). A lymph node metastasis was seen in 5 cases. While one patient determined as being in stage III b of the disease died of the cancer approximately 5 months after surgery, all of other patients are still alive.
